Most people try to fill the time as best they can, often with something amusing, or sometimes with hard work. Most younger people aren't inclined toward the latter, because they see it as leading to nothing else but hard work for other people. So usually they try to find something fun or amusing, some way to pass the time. A lot of adults are the same way. If you're looking for fun, America and Europe have more cable TV than the rest of the world. You can spend hours absorbing it, whether movies or variety shows or obscene cartoons. We've got video games available in equal abundance, with more titles than you could play in a lifetime and the best animation ever. Also movies, surround sound, in 70mm at theatres that are open every night. Whoah, and did I forget to mention the hordes of exciting, diverse and interesting drugs we've got at our disposal? We've got music that's the slickest in the world, from hip-hop to rock to alternative to pop country. And celebrities - chicks with big racks - check 'em out! High speed access means you can download them, or rent an interactive DVD. What these things have in common that you won't find mentioned on the label, or by any of the people debating them and their various stages of legality in the courts and on TV, is that they are no-end result activities. They're designed to amuse you, literally entertaining you while the time passes, so you don't feel bored or scared. The time passes, then you're back at square one. No matter how many times you figure out the plot of the movie before anyone else, or are the first guy you know to master the video game, or even times when you download the best television programs before anyone else gets to see them, you're still right where you started. In your living room, or in front of a computer. $8 poorer after a movie, still earning the same salary. It's depressing, of course... but only after you've completed the activity and you have time to think about it. At that point, most people shrug and jump in again. Nothing's changed - nothing will! - load a bowl, rack a cartridge, fire up the VCR or slip on some headphones. You're going to be right back where you were before, and then you'll go back to fantasy world again.
In fact, it makes you nothing but a source of profit for the same people who appear to be content to let you rot at $6 an hour if it makes them money. I know a lot of our youth, people of Indo-European descent in the US and Europe, who spent a lot of their time doing these things and they swear it's the bomb. It's the shiznit and it's top on their lists. They listen though when I say that all activites are one of two types, and playing video games or watching movies can only be one of those types. They listen when I say that no matter where you are, there's a bigger goal, and it passes by if too much time is spent on the couch, hitting the bong and staring into the glowing screen. They know, deep down, because they're feeling the pressure of what I'm describing. OMFG, I've got one life to live and it's passing by quickly... and what am I doing to make it meaningful? Some things add to your life. Build something, learn something, make a new friend or work hard at what you're doing to succeed in your career. If nothing else, you fix the things that you need and get ready for your next step ahead. Maybe money isn't your thing; it's music. Then make music, because it gets you nowhere to just be buying it. Some people are angry and like to drink a lot and tell me how they're "activists" because they kicked in a few faces. Well, there may be a time for that. But that alone isn't a plan, nor is it getting anywhere. Especially if their best prospect at age 28 is to work the register in a cash station, stock vegetables at a grocery store or sell pipes in a headshop. We face a grueling task, because our opposition have the power and the numbers and we're starting out from square one. It won't be easy and they're going to fight dirty. Furthermore, any chance they get they'll try to squash as down as a tribe because they want to dominate us. But we have a choice, because of one fundamental truth. This truth is the simplest math possible, and here it is: If there's something positive to the right of the + sign, there's going to be something - even a small something - on the other side of the equation. No matter what little task it is, you're getting ahead. It sure beats having nothing, and coming back to square 1, time and time again.
