One of my habits is that of talking to younger people to see how they see their own futures. I don't talk to everyone, because the old adage that everyone can teach you something is obviously false, but I talk to the ones who seem alert and aware. The ones who might do something like plan a life. Among those who are not aware of any of the larger political issues that threaten not only their own kind but also their species as a whole, there is a lack of any connection to politics itself. "Oh, it's a lifestyle choice," they say, as if whether or not one decides to be active in the future is a haircut, an accessory, or a favorite brand. These same people probably believe that, when living on the frontier, confronting marauding bears, snakes weasels is a lifestyle choice as well. On the other hand, among those with political awareness I find several consistent tendencies, namely those toward truthfulness, paranoia and depression. "Paranoia and depression? Clearly they're crazy," says the mawkish society vulture. Or maybe they've seen the truth, and have good reason to be upset. A brief recap of history, for 2003. In the West, humanity developed technology unhindered by naturalist concerns, following in part the new dogma of "Christianity" derived from Judaism, in which the human individual and its mortal state was the highest value in the land and nature, desire, creativity and playfulness were seen as "evil" or not being of the good and pure origins of Christian dogma. Because the West has both this massive technology and a crippling dependency on being seen as "good," Western nations have taken over the world in the interest of colonizing it. Therefore we have a "Western" United Nations and "Western" America, both of which enforce Judaic morality through the barrel of an Aryan gun. Kids growing up today see this, and they get depressed. First, they realize that Judaic doctrine, with its emphasis on the equality of people and the importance of preserving the human form over heroic or "correct" action, is a cleverly disguising way of normalizing us all and making us each conform to the same form factor of a human being - not coincidentally, one based upon Jewish views of the human spirit and its "inherent" tendencies. Even more troubling, however, for these kids is that they realize that adults aren't going to do anything to change the situation. Adults, you see, are paralyzed between two dogmas. One says "don't offend" and the other one says "don't miss out." Because we exist in a society founded on business alone, and because we have placed an implicit price tag on every object or space of land under the sun, we cannot offend others, because it is bad business and could lead to insolvency. Thus any serious political or philosophical or ethical discussion is precluded, as making decisions - picking choice A over choice B - will offend someone, probably those who make a living from choice B even though it's an immoral and wasteful industry. The second dogma is even more nihilizing. "Don't miss out" implies that, because this society is a business populated by individuals, there is something waiting for you, perhaps profit and a large house in the suburbs? To become politically, philosophically or ethically active is to endanger this; why are you wasting your time on public ethos when there's a profit to be made and retirement to be had? This is a gruesome conundrum and clearly one that will challenge us in the future. For my answers to all of these problems, as well as a suggestion for a painless future, see next week's column, "Overcoming Separation." |
