Free Thinking and Free Speech

Though proponents of Western civilization profess to be following a tradition unique for its critical examination and relentless pursuit of truth, in practice such ideals ring hollow. These claims are probably not a deliberate lie, as historical praise can be found for dissident acts such as Galileo's heretical astronomy or America's outspoken Founding Fathers, but this praise came only after they had outlasted death threats from the authorities of their eras.

Perhaps a society with free thinking and free speech is undesirable. It could be argued that knowledge of differing ideas is divisive, just as diversity prevents society from benefitting from a unified ideology, culture, and value system. Regardless, it is only honest to point out the hypocrisy and fraud of societies that pretend to value the open discussion of ideas but behave quite differently when those ideas have teeth. Therein is a problem with our implementation of "free speech": you can say anything except the controversial, which is unfortunate as that which is controversial often reflects the reality of a situation which most are desperately trying to deny, for reasons unrelated to the situation itself.

The bitter reality is that a free thinker acts as a disruptive force when stating forbidden truths. This will always be opposed by those in power who rely on falsehoods for a variety of techniques that preserve their rule. Some nations openly forbid controversial ideas and imprison people who mention those. Other nations claim to permit free speech, but encourage citizens to act as state apparatus to enforce speech codes on behalf of the government. When any substantial idea is expressed in public, it is quickly met with suppression, typically in the form of media smear campaigns and persistent efforts to terminate the offender's employment.

Sometimes a nation says they permit free speech, but demand that such speech be "responsible" or that all speakers be "accountable" for their words, so only ideas arbitrarily considered "appropriate" are allowed, meaning those that are profitable and agree with the agenda of the people in charge.

There is a rationality to this censorship because a great deal of social structure is invested in old ideas. New discoveries and realizations threaten to unseat established leaders, organizations, and capitalists who desire personal gain more than truth. But have faith, free thinkers and truth tellers, for this suppression is only transitory and truth eventually overcomes all opposition. As Arthur Schopenhauer once wrote, "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

Thoughts that cannot be printed in newspapers or discussed in public today continue to circulate underground, gathering momentum as they accumulate further evidence and support. In every battle with detractors, victories bring strength that prove the veracity of better ideas.

Depending on the investment in false ideas, it can take many decades to force the system to admit any error to allow for correction and repair. Here the work of a free thinker is vital to civilization, for he illuminates where others see only darkness, leading society toward a better understanding of the world.

We should continue to shine this light until those who hide in darkness no longer have a safe place to lie.
