By her nature as a republic of people with no recent shared genetic memory, America had no culture in common except that which, through the very "individualist" nature of Semitic religions, was justified as "freedom," the marketplace. Where initially the values of her primary population donors prevailed, America eventually succumbed to the lowest common denominator and became entirely a commercial entity. From this valueless social climate sprung a defensive justification of the same values that enabled it to exist: "grand statements" about freedom, justice, individuality, competition and rights. Because these soon became the ways which products related to patriotism were sold, America adopted those values as her own form of identity. This identity, coupled with the liberal attitudes America adopted to show she was "better than" her adversaries in WWII and the cold war, became the forefront of a renovation in American government during the 1960s. New values overwrote the old and the nation changed to, as a whole, a more egalitarian, multicultural state. Because of this duality, America was able to have her cake and eat it too, being a world superpower who using the most brutal methods possible to enforce her goals, which preaching against others who used the same methods. These include but are not limited to: nuclear attack, saturation bombing, fomenting revolution, genocide, and terrorism.
The reason is simple: Americans trust their own media, without realizing something fundamental to any assessment of what it presents as 'truth.' Like every other aspect of American society, the American media functions first and foremost as a business. Its job is not to inform reliably, nor does it make more money for being accurate: it profits from generating attention to the products of its advertisers. Thus when the media quietly bows out of any insightful coverage of the war on Iraq, it could be because oil money interests and those who make a great living from selling religion are involved. If there's no negative coverage of massive racial mixing, it is because business sees opportunities in Latinos, Asians, Blacks, Mestizos. And caring about the future of the American people and their culture? There's no money in culture. Time after time we see people on the television who are incredulous or defensive about the views other nations have of America. What these people don't realize is that they are tools of a system that profits from their ignorance, and in times of war, will do nothing but sell them weapons. The marketplace has no culture, nor any values, except being a marketplace. And the marketplace drives the media, the media creates the opinions of voters, and the voters thus do the bidding of the marketplace - a form of control more insidious than any dictatorship, because they've convinced these "individualists" that supporting the very force that oppresses them is their only method of having "freedom." The only resistance is simple: don't trust those who are paid to deceive. Realize your politicians have no accountability for what the results of their actions, and recognize that the media stands to profit from any outcome. You're not in a culture; you're in the grips of the marketplace. And the first step to breaking out is to stop trusting those opinions that are bought and paid for. |
