Lick your finger and put it to the wind, and you'll notice something's different. The wind is blowing in a different direction and it's no longer so cold in town, and it's warmer, like someone finally stopped keeping a secret and we can all breathe easy and tell the truth again. As they once said, the times, they are a-changin', but this time, things are blowing in a different direction. If you have an open mind, of course, you won't mind when someone new comes to dinner. Or is seen on the face of your neighbor. Or even your kids bring it home from school. Politics meant a good deal of things until recently, but one thing it meant were a series of edicts the voter did not pass, lest he or she be accused of being "un-American." You didn't talk about racial separation in any positive way; that was for sickos like Tim McVeigh! You didn't mention the government getting super-powerful, or globalism and UN, or Israel, our troublesome ally... and you didn't talk about the rampant pollution and environmental damage we're ignoring while our corporate overlords get fatter.
It used to be that the only people who talked about ending immigration suddenly and sending other races back to their homelands wore pillowcases over their heads and burned crosses on weekends. Not so any more. And it used to be that the only people who spoke actively against Israel had no hair and wore Doc Martens, but that's not the case any longer, either. Faces that we see now around the meetings, the pamphlet distribution parties and spontaneous social events, well, there's some old faces and some new ones, too. There's boots and braces next to the young fellow with the short hair and suit who came over in a BMW. There's women who are at the tops of their professions, and people renowned in their businesses, and others who are success in what they do in our society. Normally, these people would be happy to let politics slide right under the rug, as unless there's an immediate threat, they're live and let live. And busy getting recognized and celebrated in their path of choice, if not starting a second. Somewhere a taboo broke and now there's new voices giving us fresh takes on things we've known for a long, long time. A young computer engineer speaks up and says, "What about the way the Left is promoting a destruction of our traditional ways?" Across the table a white-haired man listens, thinks, and pauses to chip in his bit before heading back to the bank he manages. "And what's this news about Israel shooting 4 U.N. workers in Palestine, but it doesn't get mentioned on the evening news?" A young mother who by day runs her own florist shop, one that's beating out the big chains and winning over people with intuitive service and quality product, re-adjusts the baby she's holding and murmurs a news tidbit about Israeli intelligence before 9-11. The next table over, there's a group of young couples talking about how to teach children the truth, when you can't find it in the newspapers or magazines. It's like people knew for years that there were some suspicious connections in politics, but they kept a switch off in their heads lest they say something in front of the wrong people and be unable to get another job again. We all know the fear of the anonymous critics who, with money and a cause that's recognized, can shame you out of saying what you think. But the thing about that switch is that it's hard to change it back once flipped, so if someone just gives it a big shove -- and if a certain cluster of public opinions waver just a bit -- the switch might flip back to the "open" position and the person might be able to think again. Then the socially-acceptable lies might collapse. Suppose you don't think the races should mix. Maybe you think Israel is not America's greatest ally. Or you have more than lingering doubts about some of the religious fanaticisms embraced by the Christian and Jewish lobbies that are very powerful in news media, business, and government. You kept these quiet. Except that one dike broke, and the flooding water pooled behind the next so suddenly it collapsed, and now the rushing waters are at the door of some of the long-standing taboos our society has maintained. What, it's not benevolent to assimilate minorities and support a xenophobic holy state? Judaism is a racial religion? All across America, and Europe, too, white people are asking themselves the same question they once did. "Is it possible certain ideas have been wrong all along?" As the pendulum swings back, its center adjusts to fit new knowledge. This is what is happening in American politics and society, and because of that, the people who normally make changes are thinking in a new way. The times, they are a-changin'... |
