One of the larger problems facing National Socialism right now is that it is misunderstood. The primary reason for this is postwar propaganda, including that which is marketed as "entertainment," namely movies. Even those that seem sympathetic to the National Socialist ideal misconstrue it in such a way as to re-direct potential National Socialists from the important issues to the unimportant ones. This is most profoundly felt regarding the question of race. If you listen to the Hollywood movies, the state-taught history teachers, and the popular historians, Adolf Hitler came to power with a single goal: to eliminate all "inferior" non-whites and establish a "superior" white reign over the world. Furthermore, goes the popular view, he delighted in brutality and genocide and was a raving madman. In this we see the grand tradition of moral entertainment, where there must be a good guy who is 100% good, and a bad guy who is correspondingly entirely bad. Like most successful misinterpretations, the defaming of National Socialism relies on "spin," or putting a different interpretation and scope around some known facts. Adolf Hitler clearly considered the Nordic-Germanic, or Aryan, peoples to be superior to those around them; what is forgotten, of course, was that he was speaking in terms of Europe alone. When he addressed Europe as such, he was speaking a fundamental truth: a country is only as secure as its borders, and its neighbors. When Germany is the question, Europe is the topic, because no country with enemies at its borders - including an unstable and destructive Soviet Union - is safe to conduct its business as it needs to. Further, having lived through World War I (and been decorated in combat service), Hitler knew that the UK-France axis would oppose any power of great force in central Europe, and therefore needed to be cleared out of the way. Cognizant also of the role that Eastern Europe had played in the first world war, Hitler wanted to make sure those fronts were secured as well. His other conquests, including those in North Africa and the Middle East, were for the purposes of protecting the flanks of his empire, and obtaining natural resources. When one is aware of these needs, it becomes clear that Hitler's goal was not to take over the world, but to secure Europe so that Germany could be spared constant war. Knowing this, we have only one other question on our minds: was Hitler an insane bigot who wished to purge the world of "inferior" non-whites so that "superior" Aryans could reign? Once again, this is a question of context. In Germany, anything that is not ethnically German is "inferior" for the purposes of maintaining the German people; if you breed other elements into Germans, you destroy them ethnically, erasing thousands of years of history and turning the population into a mixed group much like that in nearby countries. Similarly, if you want to breed healthy ethnic Germans, what is "superior" are those of German ethnic stock. We can see the truth of this by noting that, in conquered lands, Hitler did not attempt to overwhelm native populations. Where he found ethnic German stock, he encouraged healthy breeding; where he did not, as in France and Eastern Europe, he encouraged breeding of the healthiest possible form of the local ethnicity. Since he allied himself with other empires in Asia, Eastern Europe, Italy, Spain and the Middle East, it's questionable that he saw them as "inferiors" who had to be eliminated. The only theory that makes sense of his actions is that he saw Nationalism, or the pride in ethnic-cultural group and the breeding of its best possible forms, as an answer for each country according to its own traditional population. It is mentally easy to accept the Hollywood version of events, because a story with a 100% bad guy trying to dominate innocent perfectly "good" guys tugs at our heart; like any underdog story, it appeals to our own sense of justice, and our own experience striving for recognition among powerful foes. Unfortunately, to publish any sort of balanced critique of those years is professional suicide for a historian, because their audience is well-steeped in the propaganda and therefore will brand them Nazis, haters, bigots, etc. However, when we read history with our own critical eyes, it becomes clear that what was undertaken was not a bigoted crusade to dominate the world, but a simple task of preserving ethnic Germans and their culture. |
