I recommend barefoot running on sand or grass for stronger ankles/knees.

In the Swami Vishnudevananda's 'The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga,' the author recommends walking barefoot whenever possible on any natural aspect of the earth.  This would exclude cement and such.  I know from experience that the soles of the feet can trigger some pretty amazing responses in other parts of the body.  Do not ask me to elaborate.

If you're going to run barefoot, do it on a soft surface like sand or grass, and start out little by little. It's not that great for your joints if you just plunge right in.

Try running on hot coal, it's fun to say at least.
