Back home, my dad would fix every practical problem. In 99 out of 100 times, he solved whatever the problem was. What I've learned from him is that it doesn't always matter if you don't know what you're doing. Just do it.

DIY is indeed a lot of learn as you go. With the internet for reference, there is less excuse than ever to lack abundant general know how to save some money, learn something and gain a positive sense of accomplishment in life leading to inner strength in self-confidence. The modern world wants your dependency on services to manage every iota of your life in exchange for ever increasing sums of your money and a reduction in your self-reliance. This is the new slavery.

The more things you successfully fix, the better you get at fixing things generally from cars to garden sheds to computers to building compost bins and setting tile and glass block for an elegant shower.

An actual scholar and scientist explains my comment much better than I can.

Quote
IQ doesn't fit well with evolutionary psychology because intelligence was not designed to solve any particular problem from our evolutionary past. Rather, it was designed to integrate information from a wide range of areas and use this information to solve novel problems. Humans can solve a whole lot of problems that were not around in the environments we evolved in. That's why it's important  for success in school — and modern life.
