Last month after the Pennsylvania caucus, I mentioned a Republican calculation that 15% of white voters would never vote for a Black man. Exit polls gave circumstantial confirmation.

Then came reports earlier this week of Obama canvassers confronting racists in the streets and on the phone.

Last night, more than half of West Virginia's 95% white voters said that they wouldn't be happy if Obama got the nomination. A shockingly large number say they would vote for McCain if he got the nomination.

Arabs taking Jews' jobs

Most of the customers do not usually realize that the woman who helps them in the mall to choose a pair of jeans, or the salesman for a hose for the garden, or ink for the printer, is an Arab resident of the Triangle, or Wadi Ara, or Ramle, or Lod or Galilee. But the number of
Arabs employed in the retail businesses or the services is growing, especially in the large chains and the telephone service depots.

Once, before the intifadas and the curfews, Jews would travel to Arab towns to do shopping. Today Arabs come in droves to the Jewish communities to sell in response to the needs of both sides - the economic interests of the employers and the socioeconomic interests of
the workers.

Moshe Rosenblum, CEO of Israel Malls, says the phenomenon stems, among other things, from the shortage of workers. "The chain stores pay minimum wage or a little more than that. A lot of Jews have become choosy, while many of the Arab women prove themselves to be very good sales people," he says. "An Arab salesman is prepared also to clean the
toilets and to work for minimum wage without fringe benefits. Jews, less so," says Adib Yihye, the owner of a manpower company from Kafr Kara.

No racism in the presidential election?

Meanwhile, some white Americans are turning themselves inside out to come up with excuses for why they're not supporting Obama. It seems like just yesterday that these folks were arguing there is no racism in the immigration debate, and now they're insisting there is no racism in the presidential election.

Some want to know why it isn't racist when 70 percent of African-Americans vote for Obama but it is when 70 percent of whites vote against him.

The answer has to do with history. Over the decades, black Americans have had plenty of opportunities to vote for white people for president. And they have done so. But this is the first time that white Americans have a chance to vote for an African-American with a shot at the presidency. And what are they doing?

Two billion trees planted in UN campaign

More than two billion trees were planted around the world as part of the UN's campaign to combat climate change, the world body's environment programme (UNEP) said Tuesday in a statement.

The Nairobi-based agency said the tree planting campaign, inspired by Kenyan Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai, will help mitigate the effects of pollution and environmental deterioration.

Beach disputes study on racial bias in arrests

The most obvious flaw in the study, police said, is that all the figures are derived using the city's 1990 U.S. census racial breakdown of 10 percent black and about 86 percent white. By the 2000 census, Virginia Beach was 19 percent black and about 71 percent white. The black population in 2006 was estimated at about 20 percent of the total.

"If I’d turned a paper in grad school using data that was 18 years old, my professors would have said it was an invalid study," Cervera said. "The African American population has increased tremendously."

King acknowledged that not accounting for the increasing black population in Virginia Beach skewed the study toward showing that a higher percentage of blacks were arrested for drugs.

He said the main point of the study remained valid: Blacks still are being arrested more frequently on drug charges. "There are no studies of use, abuse or selling dynamics,” he said, "that support the scope of disparity we see."

Negative images harm black youth, forum told

Black youth must gain a greater knowledge of the history of African civilization and the effects of colonialism and the slave trade before they can learn to reject some of the negative influences that enslave them today, says an award-winning history teacher.

David Watkins told the African Canadian Diaspora 2008 youth conference at the University of Windsor that when a community is only vaguely aware of its past, it becomes easy for negative assumptions to be foisted upon them.

He said many blacks are unaware of the history of Africa, running back hundreds to thousands of years to when Ethiopia and Zimbabwe were great empires and Africa was "the envied cradle of civilization," boasting the first universities, great religions and a proud people.

"The record companies say throw in some 'nigger, bitch and ho' and we'll take you on," he said. "Gangsta rap is bought 80 per cent by white male college students... It's a construct from outside our community... As educators, we need to deconstruct this mentality and show how we're being manipulated. We've got to replace it with the truth."

'Racist' chimp Obama T shirts

Marietta bar owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring a look-a-like of cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" underneath, are not meant to offend.

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey.

"We're not living in the (19)40's," he said. "Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears he looks just like Curious George."

About a dozen prostestors rallied against the shirts Tuesday afternoon, condemning them as racist and asking Norman, longtime proprietor of Mulligan's Bar and Grill on Roswell Street, to stop selling them.

'Scrappers' Cause Headaches for Military

Hundreds of Marines were conducting a combat training mission in the Mojave Desert when an air patrol spotted something kicking up dust: A civilian pickup truck speeding across the barren landscape. Behind the wheel was a suspected scrap metal thief who had been combing the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center for spent brass shell casings. His intrusion onto the base was the 12th time in six months that scavengers had inadvertently halted combat exercises.

Bombing ranges have become prime hunting grounds for so-called "scrappers," who are motivated by soaring commodity prices to take greater risks in their quest for brass, copper and aluminum. The scavenging causes headaches for the military, which cannot patrol every inch of the remote bases where spent ammunition, shrapnel and unexploded ordnance are easy to find.

Charles Murray criticises "educational romanticism".

On requiring every child to be above average.

Educational romanticism consists of the belief that just about all children who are not doing well in school have the potential to do much better. Correlatively, educational romantics believe that the academic achievement of children is determined mainly by the opportunities they receive; that innate intellectual limits (if they exist at all) play a minor role; and that the current K-12 schools have huge room for improvement.

Educational romanticism characterizes reformers of both Left and Right, though in different ways. Educational romantics of the Left focus on race, class, and gender. It is children of color, children of poor parents, and girls whose performance is artificially depressed, and their academic achievement will blossom as soon as they are liberated from the racism, classism, and sexism embedded in American education. Those of the Right see public education as an ineffectual monopoly, and think that educational achievement will blossom when school choice liberates children from politically correct curricula and obdurate teachers’ unions.

Attacker: "Look at the white boy, he looks like a victim,"

A Jacksonville high school student was recently beaten and battered at school by three students he said he didn't even know.

Witnesses to the attack told police Forrest High School sophomore Karl Koch Jr. was targeted because of the color of his skin.

According to the police report, one of the suspects said, "Look at the white boy, he looks like a victim," before punching Koch in the eye.

The report states all three attackers began kicking Koch and then laughed and ran away from the scene.

However, Tadic still lacks a clear majority to form a government. His opponent, Tomislav Nikolic, wants nationalist parties to join forces to govern.

Officer sacked for stopping black NYPD chief

Civil rights advocates said Sunday that a recent incident in which a high-ranking black police official was ordered out of his car by a white officer points out ongoing racial problems in the city's Police Department.

Granahan's father, Richard, blamed Zeigler for the incident. He told the Daily News for an article in Sunday's editions that Zeigler was parked at a hydrant in Corona, Queens, with the SUV's windows rolled up and the engine off.

The father said that Granahan's partner saw the driver fumble at his waistband and hollered, "Gun!" As Granahan grabbed the door handle, Zeigler stepped out and "smacked Michael's hand," Richard Granahan said.

Zeigler's wife, Neldra, is the NYPD's deputy commissioner for equal employment opportunity.

Earth losing its natural ability to soak up CO2?

Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii say that CO2 levels in the atmosphere now stand at 387 parts per million (ppm), up almost 40% since the industrial revolution and the highest for at least the last 650,000 years.

The annual mean growth rate for 2007 was 2.14ppm - the fourth year in the last six to see an annual rise greater than 2ppm. From 1970 to 2000, the concentration rose by about 1.5ppm each year, but since 2000 the annual rise has leapt to an average 2.1ppm.

Scientists say the shift could indicate that the Earth is losing its natural ability to soak up billions of tonnes of CO2 each year. Climate models assume that about half our future emissions will be reabsorbed by forests and oceans, but the new figures confirm this may be too optimistic.

Other than Indy's brief classroom scenes, the closest thing to authentic archaeology in the "Indiana Jones" flicks is done by the bad guys, whose elaborate, systematic digs in "Raiders" resemble actual excavations.

"Not a whole lot of what we know as archaeology goes on in these movies, except what the Nazis do. They seem to be doing some real archaeological work," said Walsh, who wrote the cover story in the May-June issue of Archaeology magazine examining the real history of crystal skulls featured in the new "Indiana Jones" movie.

"Double-ness, lying and imposture have a special significance for an American Jew"

I think that the themes of double-ness, lying and imposture have a special significance for me as an American Jewish writer. If Americans are self-made people who embrace an imagined future in order to escape the burdens of the past, American Jews seek to have their cake and eat it too by embracing the future-oriented American idea without
relinquishing their historically bound identity as Jews. While I don't think that the American and the Jewish identity principles are always necessarily opposed, I do think that keeping both ideas in one's head at one time can be the source of a tremendous amount of creative tension.

It is also inherently deceptive, in the sense that one is quite often signaling to others that one has agreed to dissolve one's particular heritage and historically bound point of view into a common Christian-inflected, highly individualistic and alienating, yet incredibly productive future-oriented social whole that most American Jews view with a high degree of distance and skepticism. The only real parallel for the ungracious refusal of large numbers of American Jews to buy into the full weirdness and wonder and scariness of the American idea is the experience and behavior of blacks --- whose situation is radically different because of the overt and inescapable historically-bound prejudice directed at the color of their skin. Blacks
can't dissolve themselves in the American melting pot, and so they often see the American idea as a open lie at the same time as they taste its sweet honey.

Einstein: Nothing 'chosen' about the Jews, Bible 'childish' legends

Albert Einstein, writing in 1954, dismissed Judaism and other religions as "an incarnation of the most childish superstitions," though he said he gladly belonged to the Jewish people and felt a deep affinity for the Jews' "mentality," excerpts published on Tuesday showed.

Einstein also said he saw nothing "chosen" about the Jews, and that they were no better than other peoples "although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power."

The renowned physicist, who died a little more than a year after writing the letter, also had tough words for God and the Bible, according to the text published by the British The Guardian daily.

Chavez slams Merkel as a "political descendant of Adolf Hitler"

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called German Chancellor Angela Merkel a political descendant of Adolf Hitler and German fascism.

The leftist leader, who famously called U.S. President George W. Bush "the devil" at a United Nations assembly, slammed Merkel for calling on Latin American leaders to distance themselves from Chavez.

"She is from the German right, the same that supported Hitler, that supported fascism, that's the Chancellor of Germany today," he said.

Russian bank hit by 'neo-Nazi ad' scandal

Bloggers are enraged by billboard advertisements for a bank in the Russian city of Ekaterinburg. They claim the ad has an encrypted message that glorifies Nazi ideology. Bank officials have called the scandal a plot by 'some outcasts' reports the Gazeta.ru news site.

The controversial ad is part of the bank's campaign timed to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations in Russia. It's offering a 14.88 per cent interest rate on deposits made by World War II veterans.

The 'encrypted neo-Nazi message', according to bloggers, is in that very number. Both 14 and 88 hold special meaning for neo-Nazis: 14 is the number of words in a slogan authored by notorious white nationalist leader and ideologist David Lane, while 88 stands for the Nazi salute 'Heil Hitler' as 'H' is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

The bank's management reject all accusations and say the outrage stems from 'pervert outcasts, roaming around in search for hidden symbols and made public by irresponsible people who spread such stories.'

Growing gap between rich and poor in Israel - while ethnicity becomes less important

The Sephardi-Ashkenazi fissure is blurring, a prey to intermarriage, social mobility, and to the distance in time from countries of origin and their culture. Young Israelis do not carry their "ethnicity" in the forefront of their consciousness. Their Israeliness, however defined, is steadily taking precedence.

The Russians - and there have been more than a million migrants in the past 20 years from the former Soviet Union - are on the make, with the classic profile of the Jewish migrant: determined, hard-working and studious. There are enough of them to sustain a flourishing culture - attracting a new respect from other Israelis.

Such confident multiculturalism helps explain an easing in the perennial Orthodox-secular strains in Israeli society. The downside is the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. Bibi had hacked away at the welfare state with a vigour that made Thatcherites pale. Many economists say he saved the country. But a million or more poor Israelis have yet to feel the promised trickle-down effect, while the super-rich soar into the stratosphere. Silver-tongued Bibi may bamboozle with a bridge of words. But the chasm between rich and poor yawns dark and menacing.

Mbeki clings on

Thabo Mbeki has just survived an attempt to sack him as president of South Africa. This occurred at last weekend's summit of the tripartite alliance - the ANC, the Communist Party (SACP) and the biggest trade union group, Cosatu, where the motion for Mbeki to go was put by the SACP. At the end of the summit the leaders of the three organisations appeared together to insist that Mbeki would in fact be staying on but the fact that his dismissal could be openly discussed and debated shows how completely his presidency has collapsed.

ANC and alliance leaders have many grievances against Mbeki - his policies over Zimbabwe and Aids have brought nothing but disaster and lack of international credibility; the onset of regular power cuts has ruined hopes of high economic growth and put many jobs at risk; unemployment and inequality remain stubbornly high; the government's failure to stem the crime wave is complete and Mbeki is now revealed as having tried unconstitutionally to prevent the public prosecutor from bringing proceedings against the police chief, Jackie Selebi, Mbeki's crony - a matter about which Mbeki had very publicly lied.

[ We are yet to see a modern African leader who is not corrupt and can rule effectively. Not that such leaders are in abundance anywhere in the world. Africa's "big man" culture, of respecting brutality and ostentatious wealth, doesn't help. ]

Westerners working more for less reward

Across Spain, France and Italy, young middle-class professionals with good degrees and diplomas are facing a lifetime on low salaries with unrewarding jobs, forever poorer than their parents.

According to Chauvel, 41, a sociologist at the National Foundation for Political Science, for the first time in recent history a generation of French citizens aged between 20 and 40 can expect a lower standard of living than the one before. 'Mileuristas or babylosers: it's the same story,' he said. 'They have an average of three years more education than their parents, a worse job and a lower standard of living.'

In 1973, only 6 per cent of recent university leavers in France were unemployed; now the rate is 25 to 30 per cent; salaries have stagnated for 20 years while property prices have doubled or trebled, though the overall proportion of French people living in poverty has not changed. Whereas in the 1960s the poor were mainly the old, now they are the young; in 1970, salaries for 50-year-olds were only 15 per cent higher than those for workers of 30; the gap now is 40 per cent.

[ The situation is the same over western Europe and the US. And they we are working for the 1% of the population who own 40% of the wealth of the world. This is exploitation. ]

Peak civilization

We - and by this I mean people throughout the industrial world - have to make the transition to a Third World lifestyle. There's no way to sugar-coat that very unpalatable reality. Fossil fuels made it possible for most people in the industrial world to have a lifestyle that doesn't depend on hard physical labor, and to wallow in a flood of mostly unnecessary consumer goods and services. As fossil fuels deplete, all that will inevitably go away. How many people would be willing to listen to such a suggestion? More to the point, how many people would vote for a politician or a party who proposed to bring on these changes deliberately, now, in order to prevent total disaster later on?

John Kenneth Galbraith has written a brilliant, mordant book, The Culture of Contentment, about the reasons why America is incapable of constructive change. He compares today's American political class (those people who vote and involve themselves in politics) to the French aristocracy before the Revolution. Everybody knew that the situation was insupportable, and that eventually there would be an explosion, but the immediate costs of doing something about it were so unpalatable that everyone decided to do nothing and hope that things would somehow work out. We're in exactly the same situation here and now.

So while it may be appealing to fantasize about vast government programs bailing us out of the present predicament, such fantasies are not a practical way of responding to the situation. We have to start with the recognition that the most likely outcome of the current situation is collapse: to borrow the Club of Rome's formulation, sustained, simultaneous, uncontrolled and irreversible declines in population, industrial production, and capital stock.

China's Unwelcome Advances

Some non-governmental organisations worry that Chinese firms will ignore basic legal, environmental and labour standards in their rush to secure resources, leaving a trail of corruption, pollution and exploitation in their wake. Western companies fret that the Chinese state-owned firms with which they suddenly find themselves competing have an agenda beyond commercial gain. The Chinese government, they say, is willing to pay over the odds for mining or drilling rights to secure access to physical resources. It also intervenes unfairly on its companies' behalf, they claim, by offering big aid packages to countries that welcome Chinese investment. All this, it is feared, will dent the profits of big oil and mining firms, stoke inflation and imperil the West's access to resources that it needs just as much as China does.

Diplomats and pundits, for their part, fear that the West is "losing" Africa and other resource-rich regions. China's sudden prominence, according to this view, will reduce the clout of America, Europe and other rich democracies in the developing world. China will befriend ostracised regimes and encourage them to defy international norms. Corruption, economic mismanagement, repression and instability will proliferate. If this baleful influence spreads too widely, say the critics, the "Washington consensus" of economic liberalism and democracy will find itself in competition with a "Beijing consensus" of state-led development and despotism.

[ Surely the competition exists right now! And Washington is hardly going to just stand by and have the US replaced as a superpower by China. ]

Swedish politician acquitted of hate speech charges

A local politician from the Malmo suburb of Burlov has been acquitted of charges of agitation against an ethnic group.

The legislative motion dealt primarily with homelessness in Burlov and the appeals court ruled the motion was written so poorly that its aim was rendered unintelligible.

Instead, the court attempted to interpreted what Pettersson meant.

According to the Court of Appeals, the text of the proposal could be read as saying that Kosovo Albanians are especially inclined to be involved with the heroin trade and therefore cause homelessness and other societal problems.

Ultimately, the court choose to release Pettersson, arguing that freedom of expression and the right to criticize current policy is important, especially when it comes to political debate.

How the world's oceans are running out of fish

One old lady asks me what I'm after. 'I want to know why the Spanish are eating so many undersized fish from populations that are running out,' I say. 'It's simple,' she says. 'We like fish and small fish taste better.'

Is anyone not aware that wild fish are in deep trouble? That three-quarters of commercially caught species are over-exploited or exploited to their maximum? Do they not know that industrial fishing is so inefficient that a third of the catch, some 32 million tonnes a year, is thrown away? For every ocean prawn you eat, fish weighing 10-20 times as much have been thrown overboard. These figures all come from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which also claims that, of all the world's natural resources, fish are being depleted the fastest. With even the most abundant commercial species, we eat smaller and smaller fish every year - we eat the babies before they can breed.

Callum Roberts, professor of marine conservation at York University, predicts that by 2050 we will only be able to meet the fish protein needs of half the world population: all that will be left for the unlucky half may be, as he puts it, 'jellyfish and slime'. Ninety years of industrial-scale exploitation of fish has, he and most scientists agree, led to 'ecological meltdown'. Whole biological food chains have been destroyed.

The 82-year-old scientist, dubbed here the father of the Green Revolution for helping development a hybrid wheat seed that allowed Indian farmers to dramatically increase yields, says the current food crisis offers the world a chance to put farmers on the right road to unending growth.

Gas prices knock bicycle sales, repairs into higher gear

Four-dollar-a-gallon gas is good for business if you run a bike shop.



Commuters around the country are dusting off their old two-wheelers or buying new ones to cope with rising fuel prices, bicycle dealers say.

"Everyone that comes in the shop is talking about the gas prices," said Barry Dahl, who opened Barry's Bikes in Bismarck in April. He sold more than 50 bicycles in the first month, double the projections in his business plan.

Teacher Joyce McCusker of Herndon, Va., owns a bicycle for the first time in years. She bought it last month and uses it to make the eight-mile trip home from work. A friend drives her pickup to take McCusker's daughter home from school.

Pesticide DDT shows up in Antarctic penguins

The pesticide DDT, banned decades ago in much of the world, still shows up in penguins in Antarctica, probably due to the chemical's accumulation in melting glaciers, a sea bird expert said on Friday.

Adelie penguins, known for their waddling gait and a habit of nesting on stones, have long shown evidence of DDT in their fatty tissues, although not in enough concentration to hurt the birds, according to Heidi Geisz of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

But researchers were surprised to see that the level of the pesticide in Adelies' fat had not declined, even after DDT was banned for exterior use in the 1970s in the United States and elsewhere.

1.5 Million Chinese Children Take Part in Painting Competition on Climate Change

Winners will be announced on World Environment Day on 5 June

Nairobi, 8 May 2008 - An unprecedented 1.5 million Chinese children have participated in a painting competition on the topic of climate change, in a sign of the country's growing awareness of environmental issues.

The competition, held in China for the first time, saw the children collectively submit 200,000 paintings on the theme of climate change. Some 620 paintings were selected for prizes by the jury, which was made up of renowned Chinese artists, UNEP officials and Ms Elizabeth Rihoy of Resource Africa.


The top three winners will be announced on 5 June for World Environment Day alongside the winners of UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition. As a reward for their artistry, the talented trio will participate in the UNEP Tunza International Children's Conference in Stavanger, Norway on 17-21 June 2008.

In July, the top 20 winners will be invited to Nairobi to receive their prizes from UNEP's Executive Director, Mr. Achim Steiner and to participate in children's community activities in Kenya.

This is the first time the Children's Painting Competition was held in China, in conjunction with UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition which takes place every year. The competition - sponsored by Mr. Luo Hong, a Chinese businessman, environmentalist and photographer - aimed to raise awareness on climate change issues among China's young people and the Chinese public in general.

Bush to offer Israel powerful radar

The US may offer Israel a powerful radar system that would greatly strengthen Israeli defenses against ballistic missiles while incorporating it directly into a growing US missile shield, Reuters reported on Saturday.

US President George W. Bush is expected to discuss the issue during his visit to Israel on Wednesday and Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the state, people familiar with the matter said, according to the report.

Russia puts on an arms parade to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany

For the first time since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow has put on an arms parade to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany. Russians are impressed with the military show of strength, but in Eastern Europe the parade has reawakened old fears.

In the days running up to the parade, things in Moscow looked a bit strange. Tanks rolled down the streets in the direction of Red Square while fighter jets flew over the office blocks in the heart of the Russian capital. To Western observers, these scenes were anachronistic. If it weren’t for the hundreds of billboards and luxury boutiques, it would almost seem as if things had jumped back in time to the Soviet Union in 1990.

Oslo rape stats show non-westerners prone to rape

Two out of three charged with rape in Norway's capital are immigrants with a non-western background according to a police study. The number of rape cases is also rising steadily.The study is the first where the crime statistics have been analyzed according to ethnic origin. Of the 111 charged with rape in Oslo last year, 72 were of non-western ethnic origin, 25 are classified as Norwegian or western and 14 are listed as unknown.

Rape charges in the capital are spiraling upwards, 40 percent higher from 1999 to 2000 and up 13 percent so far this year.

Nine out of ten cases do not make it to prosecution, most of them because police do not believe the evidence is sufficient to reach a conviction.

Police Inspector Gunnar Larsen of Oslo's Vice, Robbery and Violent crime division says the statistics are surprising - the rising number of rape cases and the link to ethnic background are both clear trends. But Larsen does not want to speculate on the reasons behind the worrying developments.

While 65 percent of those charged with rape are classed as coming from a non-western background, this segment makes up only 14.3 percent of Oslo's population. Norwegian women were the victims in 80 percent of the cases, with 20 percent being women of foreign background.

Border fence is a "racist thing," says Brownsville mayor

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, one of the architects of the border wall project between Mexico and Texas, drew boos from residents in Brownsville, Texas, at a public meeting on the subject this week.

"If you don't like the fence... between the city and Mexico, I suggest that you build the fence around the northern part of the city," fired off Tancredo when opponents to the fence made their displeasure heard at the meeting.

Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada called the Congressman a bigot, and said that the border wall project was a "racist thing."

"They're afraid of us Mexicans taking over politically, I think," he said in a television interview.

Hillary Clinton's shocking racist rhetoric

In case you didn't get what was behind that exchange, Mrs. Clinton spent this week making it clear. In a jaw-dropping interview in USA Today on Thursday, she said, "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on." As evidence she cited an Associated Press report that, she said, "found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

White Americans? Hard-working white Americans? "Even Richard Nixon didn't say white," an Obama supporter said, "even with the Southern strategy."

If John McCain said, "I got the white vote, baby!" his candidacy would be over. And rising in highest indignation against him would be the old Democratic Party.

To play the race card as Mrs. Clinton has, to highlight and encourage a sense that we are crudely divided as a nation, to make your argument a brute and cynical "the black guy can't win but the white girl can" is -- well, so vulgar, so cynical, so cold, that once again a Clinton is making us turn off the television in case the children walk by.

School On Lockdown After 600 Fight

Four people were arrested and a school went on lockdown after a fight between black and Hispanic students raged, according to authorities.

Police were sent to Locke High School shortly after 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.

The fight allegedly involved some 600 students.

Some minor injuries were also report. The extent of those injuries was not known but a fire department official said no one was transported to the hospital.

Al-Qaeda wants to see the destruction of Iran

Al-Qaeda's number two leader snubbed US Republican Senator John McCain for claiming that Iran is working with the terrorist organization.

During a new online Q&A session, Ayman al-Zawahiri said al-Qaeda wants to see the destruction of Iran - a Shiite nation battling the terrorists.

"We hope that war 'saps' both Washington and Tehran," he said according to a press tv report.

"The dispute between America and Iran is a genuine struggle, and the possibility of the US striking Iran is real," al-Zawahiri said.

Pesticide killing hundreds of thousands of German bees?

Bees in the German state of Baden-Württemburg are dying by the hundreds of thousands. In some places more than half of hives have perished. Government officials say the causes are unclear -- but beekeepers are blaming new pesticides.

"Fifty to 60 percent of the bees have died on average, and some beekeepers have lost all their hives."

Meanwhile, Germany's beekeepers were pointing fingers at one of Germany's largest companies, blaming a popular, recently-introduced pesticide called clothianidin for the recent die-off. Produced by Monheim-based Bayer CropScience, a subsidiary of German chemical giant Bayer AG, clothianidin is sold in Europe under the trade name Poncho. It's designed to attack the nervous systems of insects "like nerve gas," says Hederer. The chemical was used last year to fight an outbreak of corn rootworm, and its success against the pest led to a much wider application this spring up and down the Rhine.

Jewish Super-Delegates Could Swing Vote Towards Hilary

According to a new survey conducted by the Forward, a disproportionately large share of the Democratic party's super-delegates are Jewish. Many of them have declared their support for Hillary Clinton, accounting for more than 15% of her current backers.

"Politics in America has become a Jewish profession, just like arts and the law," said Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council and the author of a book about Jews and American politics. "We now are overrepresented in all these areas."

The relatively high number of Jews among super-delegates highlights a larger political shift that has occurred in recent decades, according to Forman. Although Jews have always been well represented on the American left, he said, historically they have tended to gravitate toward causes, such as the labor and civil rights movements, rather than active participation in party politics.

Washington silent on manhandling of US general by Israelis

The American bodyguards of a Bush administration envoy who was dispatched to the region to monitor the implementation of the road map engaged in a violent confrontation with right-wing Israelis who sought to disturb a visit to Hebron on Friday, Israel Radio reported. One of the rightists is reported to have driven his jeep into the convoy accompanying General William Fraser. Subsequently, one of the vehicles in the convoy heavily collided with the jeep, according to Israel Radio. A fracas ensued between the guards and the rightists before the Americans decided to cut the visit short, Israel Radio reported.

It is amazing that a three star general appointed by the US president is physically harassed and denied to do his job by citizens of a country that America has a special relationship with. Until this writing, neither the state department nor the white house have even made a public statement about the incident. IF Washington is silent about the fact that one of its generals whose mission is to monitor the parties commitments is being pushed around by Israelis how can we ever expect this American military envoy or the US government to actually publicly point the finger at the side that is violating the agreement, especially if that side is the Israeli side?

Corporate spying on dissident political groups

WHILE the Patriot Act has raised fears about government spying on ordinary citizens, the growing threat to civil liberties posed by corporate spying has received much less attention. During the late 1990s, a private security firm spied on Greenpeace and other environmental groups, examining activists’ phone records and even sending undercover agents to infiltrate the groups, according to an article in Mother Jones. In 2006 Hewlett-Packard was caught spying on journalists. Last year Wal-Mart apologized for improperly recording conversations with a New York Times reporter.

And now it turns out that the Burger King Corporation, home of the Whopper, hired a private security firm to spy on the Student/Farmworker Alliance, a group of idealistic college students trying to improve the lives of migrants in Florida.

Bees are disappearing fast in US - 32% loss in commercial hives

A survey of bee health released Tuesday revealed a grim picture, with 36.1 percent of the nation's commercially managed hives lost since last year.

Last year's survey commissioned by the Apiary Inspectors of America found losses of about 32 percent.

As beekeepers travel with their hives this spring to pollinate crops around the country, it's clear the insects are buckling under the weight of new diseases, pesticide drift and old enemies like the parasitic varroa mite, said Dennis vanEngelsdorp, president of the group.

The U.S. economic downturn has spread personal financial worries far and wide, but women are more worried about paying bills, losing jobs, providing for children and saving for retirement, according to a study released on Thursday.

The study comes as the U.S. economy has been mired in a half-year-long period of stagnation accompanied by a shrinking job market, rising energy prices and a downward spiral in consumer confidence.

The report said women, particularly among minorities, have more financial worries than men. It was based on a survey commissioned in February 2007 by the Rockefeller Foundation and an analysis by the Institute for Women's Policy Research.

Large number of immigrants poses challenge for schools in Helsinki suburbs

The number of pupils of immigrant origin is increasing constantly in schools in the suburbs of Helsinki.
Next autumn, as many as 50 out of 60 pupils starting the seventh grade at the Myllypuro comprehensive school will speak a language other than Finnish as their mother-tongue.
"This is the last moment to realise that the schools in Eastern Helsinki are in a special position", says Anneli Luotonen, the principal of the Myllypuro lower secondary school.
"Teaching alone is not enough to handle all the challenges the school is facing", Luotonen adds.

Intellectuals' poisoned congratulations on Israel's 60th anniversary

The paper "Congratulations and Concerns" was preceded by another position statement: "Friendship and Criticism," written by 25 political scientists who accuse Israel of instrumentalizing the Holocaust for its own political ends and who call for a rethink of the "special relationship" between Germany and Israel in order to render the "internal German discourse" between "non-Jewish, Jewish and Muslim Germans" broader and more impartial.

Meanwhile, there is hardly any well-known writer who has not made some kind of statement about Israel. Jostein Gaarder, the Norwegian author of the bestseller "Sophie's World," wrote Israel out of the pages of history with the words: "We no longer recognize the State of Israel." Gore Vidal, the American author who lives in self-imposed exile in Italy, South Africa's Breyten Breytenbach and the Portuguese author Jose Saramago have all also expressed their opinions, with latter comparing the situation in Ramallah to Auschwitz. When asked where the gas chambers were, he reportedly replied: "There are no gas chambers, yet."

Is Cheap Meat Bigger Threat to Amazon than Biofuels?

Development politicians fear that the demand on land to grow biofuels is diminishing agricultural production and, as a result, continuing to drive food prices ever higher. Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace Germany, say that although the expansion of sugar cane cultivation is taking place far away from the rainforest, it could still drive soya
production and animal farming into ecologically sensitive areas. On top of that, scientists have calculated bioethanol produces more of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide than normal gas.

According to Silva, at the moment only 1 percent of the country is planted with sugar cane -- so it cannot possibly be competing with food production.

However, the German environment minister sees doesn't see biofuels as posing the greatest danger to the rainforest. He'd much rather that Germans came to an uncomfortable realization: the big problem concerns the soya that Europe imports as animal feed, and the subsidies that support European farmers. "German farmers are profiting from the logging
of the rainforest much more than Brazilians," Gabriel said. He argues that German society must take a hard look at its meat consumption.

Israeli battles rage on Wikipedia

The conflict in the Middle East has spread to the internet with Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups using Wikipedia, the electronic encyclopedia, to push their message.

The pro-Israel group, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (Camera) has called for volunteers to edit entries that display notable bias on the site.

A Palestinian aggregator, Electronic Intifada, has exposed the initiative, which it claims was to be a secretive attempt to subvert the spirit of the site.

"Wikipedia, the hugely popular online encyclopedia site, can be edited by anyone," an email purportedly circulated by Camera said.

Price of picking up Mexican illegal immigrant trash is over $1m a year

The latest battle in the war on illegal immigration isn't over the smuggling of undocumented workers, it's over the trash they leave behind.

Government officials and border activists say the garbage dumped in the desert by illegal immigrants and their smugglers is staggering.

And the cleanup is costing taxpayers millions.

In 2006 alone, more than 1.18 million pounds of trash was collected along southern Arizona border, many in the meeting spots where immigrants rest, change clothes and wait to hitch a ride further north with a smuggler.

Italian Rightist horrified by burning Israeli flags

Gianfranco Fini, the president of the Italian Parliament, is facing a firestorm of controversy after saying that the May 1 burning of Israeli flags in Turin by far-left protesters was "much more serious" than the savage beating of a 29-year-old that same day in Verona by a neo-Nazi gang. The victim of the beating, Nicola Tommasoli, died late Monday after several days in a coma. Five young fans of the Verona soccer team have been arrested for the murder.

A high school student says he may file a lawsuit against a physical education teacher who took a Mexican flag he had brought for Cinco de Mayo and put it in the garbage.

Straatman denied saying the words Camelo attributed to him, and said the student may have misunderstood him because of his poor English skills. He said he took the flag from Camelo after Camelo had been waving it in the school gym, and denied withholding it later.

"I had to confiscate it so it wouldn't escalate any problems in class," Straatman told The Times-News. "We're worried about that stuff all the time. We always have kids saying stuff to each other, and we have a lot of fights between kids."
