11/28/2007: "Poor want rich nations to pay for global warming"

Floods, droughts and other climate disasters will rob millions of children of the decent meals and schools they need unless rich nations pony up $86 billion by 2015 to help the poor adapt to global warming, an expert panel warned Tuesday.

The U.S. government needs to cover $40 billion of that spending, which will "strengthen the capacity of vulnerable people" to cope with climate-related risks, according to the report commissioned by the U.N. Development Program.

[ The poor haven't adapted to any aid program since the dawn of humanity. There's something else at work here. Sending more money will encourage more breeding of poor people, which will make the problem worse. ]

And the line is drawn, we can no longer have it both ways. The Earth can survive without us, but we sure as hell can't survive without it (as nature has rendered it in our time). Something tells me we are fast approaching the point where mass sterilization simply won't be enough to keep the world ecosystem from sliding into temporary (from our perspective, catastrophic) disrepair. The only way out of this fix that I see is the advent of global starvation killing off most of the species, followed by the rise of governments that actually try to work WITH nature.
