03/08/2008: "Take money from successful schools, transfer to failing"

For the first time, the Houston school district expects that it will have to pay several million dollars to the state under the controversial Robin Hood funding system.

The oddity involving the state's largest district is prompting renewed calls for changes to Texas' complex school funding laws, which require property-wealthy districts to share money with poorer ones.

[ If it takes $5,000 per student to do a good job of educating them, and it cannot be raised through local taxes, the people in that area do not value education much or can't afford it. Robin Hood programs give both rich and poor districts $2,500 per pupil, which means neither can be effectively educated. It's a recipe for failure. ]
