04/29/2008: "Politicians don't dare campaign on immigration - although it could win them the election"
In Western North Carolina, as in many parts of the nation, immigration is a hot topic.
But presidential hopefuls aren't saying much about the issue.
They don't think it's a vote-getter, said Steven Camarota with the Center for Immigration Studies, which supports stronger enforcement of immigration laws. In general, there's very little incentive for them to talk about it. It hurts them politically.
[ It hurts them politically if they talk about it because the pro-immigration powers would make sure they are demonized. It hurts them less if they don't talk about it, despite the fact that the electorate would support them. ]
