04/05/2009: "President Barack Obama calls for a nuclear free world"

Mr Obama told a crowd of about 20,000 gathered in Hradcany Square, next to Prague Castle that nuclear weapons were the "most dangerous legacy of the Cold War" and the risk of a nuclear attack had never been greater because "terrorists are determined to buy, build or steal one".

Speaking in a city chosen for the symbolism of its peaceful toppling of communism through the Velvet Revolution of 1989, he denounced "fatalism" over nuclear proliferation and vowed to lead a global effort to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons.

[ Due to the economic crisis the US has to reduce its military expenditure. This may be part of the explanation for this initiative. Nuclear weapons cannot be un-invented so the idea of a nuclear-free world is nonsense. Reducing the arsenal makes sense because there really are far too many nukes, but a nuclear free world is not going to be achievable without one unified and peaceful people inhabiting the Earth - not something we are anywhere near. Israel officially has no nukes so that means Obama won't be asking them to disarm. And whatever happened to the idea of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction)? Should we look forward to many more conventional wars sponsored by Wallstreet? ]
