04/23/2009: "A breed of cattle brought back to life by Nazi scientists using Highland cows is roaming the British countryside again."

The breed was recreated in the 1930s on the orders of Adolf Hitler, who saw them as a symbol of Third Reich might.

And the programme created by his geneticists, Heinz and Lutz Heck, proved amazingly successful.

They traced auroch descendants to domestic breeds and mixed cows from the Highlands with other European breeds to identify the auroch gene and "pull the wild genes out".

[ They aren't anywhere near as massive as the ancient aurochs - although that is something that could still be achieved in time if selective breeding continues. I wonder if they also have the wild temperament. ]
