Making a killing from the food crisis
Much of the news coverage of the world food crisis has focussed on riots in low-income countries, where workers and others cannot cope with skyrocketing costs of staple foods. But there is another side to the story: the big profits that are being made by huge food corporations and investors. Cargill, the world's biggest grain trader, achieved an 86%
increase in profits from commodity trading in the first quarter of this year. Bunge, another huge food trader, had a 77% increase in profits during the last quarter of last year. ADM, the second largest grain trader in the world, registered a 67% per cent increase in profits in
2007.
Nor are retail giants taking the strain: profits at Tesco, the UK supermarket giant, rose by a record 11.8% last year. Other major retailers, such as France's Carrefour and Wal-Mart of the US, say that food sales are the main sector sustaining their profit increases. Investment funds, running away from sliding stock markets and the credit crunch, are having a heyday on the commodity markets, driving prices out of reach for food importers like Bangladesh and the Philippines.
Agricultural policy has lost touch with its most basic goal: that of feeding people. Rather than rethink their own disastrous policies, governments and think tanks are blaming production problems, the growing demand for food in China and India, and biofuels. While these have played a role, the fundamental cause of today's food crisis is neoliberal globalisation itself, which has transformed food from a source of livelihood security into a mere commodity to be gambled away, even at the cost of widespread hunger among the world's poorest people.

They don't care about the billions of pawns they bred over the last few decades any more. Now they are in a position to possess the world. There's no reason why other than a twisted megalomania. Nature will sort it all out eventually. ]

Second thoughts by politicians about banning NPD incase it makes them stronger
Germany has long talked about banning the neo-Nazi NPD party. But an attempt to do so is about to fail because Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives say such a bid could strengthen the party.
Germany's second attempt to ban the far-right National Democratic Party looks doomed before it has even begun because a number of conservative-ruled states are refusing to cooperate in mounting a legal bid against the party.
Germany tried to ban the NPD before, in 2003, but the country's highest court threw out the case because it was based partly on testimony from informants in the NPD recruited by the domestic intelligence service.That failure was a major embarassment to the government and emboldened the NPD which did well in several subsequent regional elections, crossing 5 percent hurdles to win seats in the eastern state parliaments of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
NPD flags and symbols are unmistakably similar to Nazi paraphernalia, and party members are on record praising Hitler and his henchmen. And in a bid to broaden its support, the party has been recruiting members of the violent neo-Nazi scene into its leadership and has joined forces with the far-right German People's Union (DVU) party.

Jewish cemetary requiring state-funded refurbishment is conveniently vandalized
One of Europe's largest Jewish cemeteries, the Weissensee cemetery in Berlin, has been attacked by vandals who knocked over 23 headstones and 10 short pillars on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.
The cemetery in the eastern Berlin district of Weissensee contains 115,000 graves and elaborate tombs, most of which predate World War II.
Reports of attacks on Jewish cemeteries are not uncommon in Germany, where synagogues and other Jewish institutions are often under 24-hour police guard.

Barmy reasons to choose Obama
Nevertheless, the debate that has now begun comes too late for Hillary Clinton. The superdelegates, who can vote for the candidate of their choice without taking voter preferences into account, in fact have no other choice but to nominate Obama. They will have to suppress the growing fear that the Democrats cannot win the election against
Republican candidate John McCain in November if Obama is their candidate. Still, as long as Obama can hold onto his slight lead in the number of pledged delegates, he will be the inevitable candidate. In fact, there is now almost a national political obligation to nominate
Obama. A vote by superdelegates against Obama would set off shock waves within American society, with incalculable consequences. Young people would be outraged, intellectuals would be bitter and violence could erupt in predominantly black urban neighborhoods around the country.

Americans unload prized belongings to make ends meet
Struggling with mounting debt and rising prices, faced with the toughest economic times since the early 1990s, Americans are selling prized possessions online and at flea markets at alarming rates.
At Craigslist, which has become a kind of online flea market for the world, the number of for-sale listings has soared 70 percent since last July. In March, the number of listings more than doubled to almost 15 million from the year-ago period.

Makeover Urged For Hitler's "Mein Kampf"
German copyright law dictates that an author's work enters the public domain 70 years after his or her death, and that deadline is fast approaching. Hitler killed himself in his Berlin bunker on April 30, 1945.
Before that anniversary, historians want Bavaria - which controls the copyright because Hitler's last official address was in Munich - to authorize an annotated version of "Mein Kampf." They say a thorough, academic presentation that places Hitler's work in historical context would be the best defense against radical right-wing groups and neo-Nazis who might want to use the book to advance racist agendas once the copyright expires and anyone is free to publish it.
[ Imagine such an "annotated" version of "Das Capital", commenting on how twisted Karl Marx was. That would be just as stupid. It is quite likely the annotations of "Mein Kampf" would be counterproductive, since they would probably be so obviously ridiculous. Eg. "This paragraph is proof that Hitler was the evilest man in history". ]

Even the homeless in US produce double average global per-capita of carbon emissions
An MIT class has estimated the carbon emissions of Americans in a wide
variety of lifestyles -- from the homeless to multimillionaires, from
Buddhist monks to soccer moms -- and compared them to those of other
nations. The somewhat disquieting bottom line is that in the United
States, even the people with the lowest usage of energy are still producing, on average, more than double the global per-capita average.
While it may seem surprising that even people whose lifestyles don't appear extravagant--the homeless, monks, children--are responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions, one major factor is the array of government services that are available to everyone in the United States. These basic services--including police, roads, libraries, the court system and the military--were allocated equally to everyone in the country in this study. Other services that are more specific, such as education or Medicare, were allocated only to those who actually make use of them.

Few dare criticise Israel
There are few political relationships more fraught than that between American Jews and Israel. As the national emblem of Jewish identity, Israel is seen by many Jews as sacrosanct. Some Jews passionately identify with Israel and its policies and angrily reject any criticism
of it, often attacking critics as anti-Semites or self-hating Jews. But even those Jews who privately harbor misgivings about Israel's policies often keep their opinions to themselves because the subject is simply too charged. Anyone, Jewish or not, who dares to say or write anything critical about Israel quickly learns that they have poked a hornet's nest.
What makes the subject especially sensitive -- and keeps many people, including most journalists, from going anywhere near it -- is that, far more than any other issue, it splits the progressive and intellectual community. Speaking more plainly, it divides one's friends and
colleagues -- sometimes even one's family. Jews have always played a prominent role in America's progressive and intellectual circles. And if you have a connection to those circles and you criticize Israel, you are almost certain to deeply offend or anger someone whom you respect, like, and have many things in common with. Small wonder that, as former Israeli official Daniel Levy told me, most people, Jews and non-Jews alike, "decide to sit this one out. It's more of a headache than it's worth."
[ Considering they believe themselves "God's Chosen People" their self-esteem seems rather fragile. They see all criticism as validating their paranoia that everyone is out to get them. ]

In Western North Carolina, as in many parts of the nation, immigration is a hot topic.
But presidential hopefuls aren't saying much about the issue.
They don't think it's a vote-getter, said Steven Camarota with the Center for Immigration Studies, which supports stronger enforcement of immigration laws. In general, there's very little incentive for them to talk about it. It hurts them politically.

Mexicans confused by US attitudes to immigration
The hypocrisy. We have two signs on the U.S.-Mexican border: "Keep Out" and "Help Wanted."
The opportunism. Too many politicians are trying too hard to portray themselves as tough on illegal immigration.
The simple solutions. "Build A Wall." "Deport All Illegals." A quick rule of thumb: If it fits on a bumper sticker, it's not a workable policy.
The naiveté. People ask why Mexico won't help stop illegal immigration. Hint: Last year, Mexicans in the United States sent home $25 billion.
[ There is a conflict of interest between those who want to end immigration and all the destruction it causes, and those who just want to profit from the cheap labor. The Mexicans are ignoring the fact that this division of interest exists. ]

Alleged 'Heil Hitler' comment lands German lawyer in court
Michel Friedman, 52, whose past posts include deputy chairman of Germany's national Jewish body, was hired by a magazine to interview Horst Mahler, 72, who started out as a communist extremist in the 1970s as a founder of the Red Army Faction terrorist group.
During previous prosecutions, Mahler has been unrepentant about his praise of Nazi rule and use of the stiff-armed Heil Hitler salute. Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany. In 2006 he arrived at jail to serve a sentence and did the salute at the gate.

Krause is a quiet, cultured man with a doctorate in philosophy. But politically he's poorly regarded. In 1998 he worked as an editor for a right-wing weekly Junge Freiheit, or "Young Freedom" -- for two-and-a-half months according to his version of events, for half a
year according to the paper's editors. After that he worked as a freelance writer for the newspaper, and for another called the Ostpreussenblatt, or "East Prussian Paper."
"I wasn't familiar with Junge Freiheit as being on the extreme right," he continued in the 2004 interview. Technically, he is correct. After the paper successfully sued at Germany's highest court in Karlsruhe to have its name removed from reports compiled by the German government's domestic intelligence agency on right-wing radicalism in the country, the media can no longer use the labels "extreme right" or "right-wing radical" to describe the paper. Instead, it's now considered the main organ of the so-called "New Right" and it articulates a political stance somewhere between democratic conservatism and the far right. A number of
politicians and public figures have been sharply criticized for giving interviews to the paper.

Soap operas cause population decline in Brazil
A study by the London-based Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) says that Brazil's national addiction to soap operas is to blame for a drastic decline in fertility rates there over the past four decades.
The small families depicted on the soaps, the study says, are causing real women to want fewer children of their own.
The shows, produced by top commercial network Globo, definitely have a "sizeable but not huge effect" on how many children Brazilian women want, one of the study's authors told the AFP.
Census figures and other data show that the fertility rates in Brazil have plummeted from 6.3 children per woman in 1960 to 2.3 children in 2000.

Moves to end the hate-fuelled practice of healthism
In an overwhelmingly overweight nation that worships thinness, many describe prejudice against the obese as one of the last socially acceptable biases. Advocates for the plus-sized, particularly activists in the "fat acceptance" movement, want obesity to become a category legally protected against discrimination, like religion, race, age and sex. But not everyone agrees.
One such law, to ban discrimination against weight and height, is pending in Massachusetts.
"I think it would help mostly because it would send a message that fat people are equal citizens. It's not in the litigation rates, but the rights consciousness that comes after legislation," said Anna Kirkland, an assistant professor.

Le Pen repeats crime of calling gas chambers a "detail of history"
"I said the gas chambers were a detail of the history of World War II: that, to me, seems so obvious," the 79-year-old Le Pen told Bretons magazine.
Le Pen was fined 1.2 million francs ($290,000) for making the initial remarks in a radio interview in 1987.
When the Bretons journalist told him that the Nazis "deported people to camps simply to kill them," Le Pen replied: "But that is what you believe. I don't feel obliged to adhere to that view."
"I observe that in Auschwitz there was the IG Farben factory, there were 80,000 laborers working there. As far as I know they were not gassed, anyway, nor burned."

"Obama Delegate" with racist motives behind Texas polygamy hoax.
Thirty-three year-old Rozita E. Swinton was arrested in Colorado Springs, Colo., and “charged with false reporting to authorities in connection with the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints case in Texas,” reports the Houston Chronicle. Swinton is listed as a Precinct 269 state delegate pledged to Barack Obama, according to the El Paso (CO) County Democratic Party, a fact first reported by some conservative blogs.
Investigators say Swinton, who is black, is "obsessed" with the polygamist cult. "She knew it was a racist cult," says Linda Walker, who runs the Child Protection Project, run by a former member of the FLDS members. "We know that these kids are very frightened of black people. … The Texas Rangers told us she was obsessed with the FLDS. They confiscated tons of material on the FLDS. She even gave real addresses and real names of FLDS people." Police say Swinton was charged with falsely reporting abuse to authorities in connection with a separate incident in Colorado Springs two months ago.

Sharpton vows to 'close this city' after officer acquittals
Hundreds of angry people marched through Harlem on Saturday after the
Rev. Al Sharpton promised to "close this city down" to protest the
acquittals of three police detectives in the 50-shot barrage that killed
a groom on his wedding day and wounded two friends.
"We strategically know how to stop the city so people stand still and realize that you do not have the right to shoot down unarmed, innocent civilians," Sharpton told an overflow crowd of several hundred people at his National Action Network office in the historically black Manhattan neighborhood. "This city is going to deal with the blood of Sean Bell."
Sharpton was joined by the family of 23-year-old Sean Bell -- a black man -- and a friend of Bell who was wounded in the 2006 shooting outside a Queens strip club. Two of the three officers charged were also black.
[ Imagine if all the officers involved were white! Presumably the justice system is seen as being against the interests of blacks and that's where the blame is being laid. They need their own state so they don't have this problem. ]

Civil rights marchers intimidated with nooses
A teenager pleaded guilty Friday to a federal hate crime of threatening and intimidating civil rights marchers near Jena, Louisiana, last year by displaying hangman's nooses from the back of a pickup truck.
I-Reporter Casanova Love, 26, was visiting his family in Louisiana and said he witnessed the event and sent a photograph of the truck to CNN.
"If the police had not stepped in, I fear what might have happened,"Love said.

Plan to reverse global warming could backfire: study
A proposed solution to reverse the effects of global warming by spraying sulfate particles into Earth's stratosphere could make matters much worse, climate researchers said on Thursday.
They said trying to cool off the planet by creating a kind of artificial sun block would delay the recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole by 30 to 70 years and create a new loss of Earth's protective ozone layer over the Arctic.
"What our study shows is if you actually put a lot of sulfur into the atmosphere we get a larger ozone depletion than we had before," said Simone Tilmes of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, whose research appears in the journal Science.

Brazil "soy king" wants more deforestation to produce food
More of the Amazon rain forest should be cut down to make way for farmland to help ease the global food crisis, the governor of a big Brazilian farming state was quoted on Friday as saying.
Blairo Maggi, the governor of Mato Grosso state and Brazil's largest soy producer, was quoted in the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper as defending deforestation.
"With the worsening of the global food crisis, the time is coming when it will be inevitable to discuss whether we preserve the environment or produce more food. There is no way to produce more food without occupying more land and taking down more trees," said Maggi, a farming pioneer in the vast western state who is widely known as the "King of Soy."

Norway is changing law as prostitution increases
But although the prices are high in Oslo, they have been pressed down in recent years because of the flow of foreign women into the market.
Meanwhile, the Norwegian government has put forth a plan to make purchase of sexual services illegal in Norway, as well as in other countries.
The proposal has not yet been made into law, but it has a majority support in the parliament.
"People are not commodities," said Justice Minister Knut Storberget, "and criminalizing the purchase of sexual services will make it less attractive for people-traders to look towards Norway."

What's this? Ron Paul tops McCain?
Some weird things happened at last Saturday's Clark County Republican convention at Prairie High School, where it was demonstrated that democracy is too important to be left to party activists.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, who will be the Republican presidential nominee and who was the choice of local voters in the Feb. 19 Washington presidential primary, was left in the dust by Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, the anti-Iraq war, anti-tax, anti-big government libertarian.
Highly motivated and disciplined Paul supporters outnumbered McCain forces and thus will send more delegates to the state convention in Spokane next month. Never mind that in the statewide primary two months ago McCain carried Clark County with 44 percent of the Republican votes to 27 percent for Mike Huckabee and 20 percent for Mitt Romney, with Paul getting just 6.5 percent.

Studies show criminality is highly heritable
Studies have shown that up to 62 percent of antisocial and criminal behavior is "heritable," a rough measure of a genetic contribution. And in a few cases, courts have allowed arguments seemingly akin to "My genes made me do it."
The Supreme Court of South Carolina reversed a murder conviction for a man who shot a shopkeeper in the head, concurring with the killer's attorney that his actions were an outgrowth of severe, genetically rooted depression -- essentially saying that what he did was the result of an inherited disease rather than an act of free will.
[ All deliberate criminal acts are a product of the kind of person the criminal is. They should not be considered less culpable because of that! What this shows is that eugenics is necessary - especially preventing worthless and harmful people from multiplying. ]

Greenpeace founder Patrick Moore says there is no proof global warming is caused by humans, but it is likely enough that the world should turn to nuclear power - a concept tied closely to the underground nuclear testing his former environmental group formed to oppose.
The chemistry of the atmosphere is changing, and there is a high-enough risk that "true believers" like Al Gore are right that world economies need to wean themselves off fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gases, he said.
The only viable solution is to build hundreds of nuclear power plants over the next century, Moore told the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. There isn't enough potential for wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal or other renewable energy sources, he said.

Scandinavian split on sexist ads
Sweden has decided not to ban sexist advertising, saying it would risk undermining the country's cherished right to freedom of speech.
But the decision puts the country at odds with its Nordic neighbours. Norway and Denmark have strict limits on the use of such images for commercial gain.
In Norway, sexist advertising has been banned since 2003. The ban forms part of a much broader package of legal limits on advertising, protecting the depiction of religion, sexuality, race and gender.
In Norway, ads can use sexual images but they must be relevant.

Invasion of the mutant black squirrels
Mutant 'testosterone-fuelled' Russian black squirrels in Cambridgeshire are giving their grey cousins a taste of their own medicine and driving them from their homes.
"The abrupt switch from a delicate silver toned squirrel's coat to a dense black pelt occurs as a result of melanin pigments deposited in them during their development.
"A single genetic mutation can upset this balance, resulting in the over-production of the darker pigment and the birth of a black squirrel."
The unusual black form has spread to the county from North Hertfordshire and is the biggest change in squirrel demographics since the last indigenous red squirrels disappeared 50 years ago - as a result of the population explosion of the bigger and more aggressive greys.

Food Rationing Stuns Customers Across U.S.
At Costco stores across America, store managers have said no to shoppers wanting to purchase more than their allotted amount for certain food stuffs. “Due to the limited availability of rice, we are limiting purchases based on your prior purchasing history," read one sign in a store in Mountain View, California. In Queens, New York, quotas are being imposed on oil and flour purchases.
For over 12 years the Trumpet has predicted that food shortages would eventually grip the United States; now, they have arrived. As Joel Hilliker stated in his column last week, "It’s easy to click away or change the channel when you’ve got plenty to eat yourself. But America is hardly invulnerable."
Author Monica Davis also warned of the susceptibility of U.S. food supplies to shortages in the present market: "Even the United States is not immune from the potential for food shortages, food riots and food insecurity. We are just blind to the possibility."

In the racially divided world of prisons, even the slightest misstep may lead to trouble.
A Hispanic gang sells drugs to a white gang's customers. A white guy uses the black guys' urinal. Someone sits at the wrong table.
So it came as no surprise to those who study the nation's prisons that racial slurs aimed at blacks by a group of white supremacists may have set off the riot that left two dead at a Florence prison Sunday.
"It's an incredibly volatile mix," said Mark Pitcavage, director of investigative research for the Anti-Defamation League, who has studied prison gangs and extremist groups. "You can have people killed, literally, over nothing." Racist comments, he added, would be considered among inmates as "a definite provocation."

Transfixed by unruly financial markets, we may be missing the year’s biggest economic story: the end of the Great American Shopping Spree. For the past quarter-century, Americans have gone on an unprecedented consumption binge " for cars, TVs, longer vacations and almost anything. The consequences have been profound for both the United States and the rest of the world, and the passage to something different may not be an improvement.
To say that the shopping spree is over does not mean that every mall in America will close. It does mean that consumers will no longer serve as a reliable engine of growth. Consumption’s expansion required Americans to save less, borrow more and spend more; that cycle now seems finished. The implication: Without another source of growth (higher investment, exports?), the economy will slow.

Oil at $110 a barrel. Gasoline at $3.35 (or more) per gallon. Diesel fuel at $4 per gallon. Independent truckers forced off the road. Home heating oil rising to unconscionable price levels. Jet fuel so expensive that three low-cost airlines stopped flying in the past few weeks. This is just a taste of the latest energy news, signaling a profound change in how all of us, in this country and around the world, are going to live -- trends that, so far as anyone can predict, will only become more pronounced as energy supplies dwindle and the global struggle over their allocation intensifies.
Energy of all sorts was once hugely abundant, making possible the worldwide economic expansion of the past six decades. This expansion benefited the United States above all -- along with its "first-world" allies in Europe and the Pacific. Recently, however, a select group of former "third-world" countries -- China and India in particular -- have sought to participate in this energy bonanza by industrializing their economies and selling a wide range of goods to international markets. This, in turn, has led to an unprecedented spurt in global energy consumption -- a 47 percent rise in the past 20 years alone, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Rising reliance on coal (especially in China, India and the United States) means that global emissions of carbon dioxide are projected to rise by 59 percent over the next quarter-century, from 26.9 billion metric tons to 42.9 billion tons. The meaning of this is simple. If
these figures hold, there is no hope of averting the worst effects of climate change.

Los Angeles 'is a Third World city'
Los Angeles is becoming a "Third World city" with immigrants making up
half its workforce, says a new study.
A third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 per
cent do not speak English fluently, the Migration Policy Institute
found.
It said this left immigrants ill-equipped to fill California's
fastest-growing occupations, such as computer software engineering and
nursing. The organisation added that as the so-called baby boomers reach
retirement age, a similar pattern will spread across the US.
Ernesto Cortes Jr, of the Industrial Areas Foundation, a think-tank that
specialises on social change, claimed Los Angeles was at a crossroads.
"The question is are we going to be a 21st century city with shared
prosperity, or a Third World city with an elite group on top and most on
near poverty wages?" he said.

EU defends biofuel goals amid food crises
The EU Commission on Monday rejected claims that producing biofuels is a "crime against humanity" that threatens food supplies, and vowed to stick to its goals as part of a climate change package.
"There is no question for now of suspending the target fixed for biofuels," said Barbara Helfferich, spokeswoman for EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas.
UN Special Rapporteur for the Right to Food Jean Ziegler told German radio Monday that the production of biofuels is "a crime against humanity" because of its impact on global food prices.

UN official: Biodiversity loss hurts medical research
The world risks losing new medical treatments for osteoporosis, cancer and other human ailments if it does not act quickly to conserve the planet's biodiversity, a senior United Nations environmental official said Wednesday.

Spy case poses questions on size of Israeli ring
The case of an 84-year-old New Jersey man charged with passing secrets to an Israeli agent a quarter-century ago has created speculation that more Americans may have been serving Israeli intelligence than previously thought.
Jonathan Pollard, a civilian intelligence analyst for the U.S. Navy, was arrested by FBI agents in Washington D.C. in 1985 and pleaded guilty to spying charges, receiving a life sentence. Now, retired U.S. military engineer Ben-ami Kadish faces similar charges.
The link between Pollard and Kadish is a now-defunct Israeli intelligence agency enigmatically known as the Scientific Relations Office. The office was run by Rafi Eitan, a former officer of the Mossad spy agency who is now an octogenarian Israeli Cabinet minister in charge of pensioners' affairs.

Numerous threats, of an escalating nature, have been made against the minister in recent weeks, several sources told The Canadian Press.
The exact nature of the threats was not revealed, but sources say they are directly linked to Bill C-17, the government's anti-stripper legislation, and hinted at an organized crime connection.

A congressional candidate is defending his speech to a group celebrating the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birth, saying he appeared simply because he was asked.
Tony Zirkle, who is seeking the Republican nomination in Indiana's 2nd District, stood in front of a painting of Hitler, next to people wearing swastika armbands and with a swastika flag in the background for the speech to the American National Socialist Workers Party in Chicago on Sunday.
"I'll speak before any group that invites me," Zirkle said Monday. "I've spoken on an African-American radio station in Atlanta."

Police in Congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft.

Racial tension between Blacks and Jews in US
Nearly 17 years after riots tore Crown Heights apart, the recent beating of a black college student by Jewish assailants has exposed rising tensions between blacks and Jews in my neighborhood.
Cops and city officials have quietly gone on high alert, worried that another riot could be in the works.
Nowhere in the city will you find more devout religious people than in Crown Heights, yet it has come to this - shortly after Easter and the Pope's visit, and in the middle of the Jewish High Holy Days.
Can't we all just get along?

Cambodian Kids Get No Free Breakfast as Rice Aid Cut
April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Thirteen-year-old Pin Oudam gets a free breakfast of rice, fish and yellow split peas every morning at his school in Kampong Speu, Cambodia's poorest province. Next week he won't.
The World Food Program cut off rice deliveries to 1,344 Cambodian schools last month after prices doubled and suppliers defaulted on contracts. Schools will run out of food by May 1, depriving about 450,000 children of meals, the WFP estimates.

Immigration, taxes, crime darken Houston Area Survey
Harris County residents increasingly carry negative views about immigrants, saying they burden tax-supported services including schools and hospitals while contributing to crime, according to the 2008 Houston Area Survey.
The survey found 63 percent agreed that new immigration should be limited, up from 48 percent in 2004. Meanwhile, 61 percent of those polled said illegal immigrants are a ''very serious" problem, up from 43 percent in 2006.
''Whenever there have been large waves of immigrants arriving in the country " the Irish in 1840s and 1850s or the Greeks, Italians and Poles at the turn of the century " Americans have always responded with antagonism and fear," he said.

Gun owners are contented
In 1996, gun owners spent about 15% less of their time than nonowners feeling "outraged at something somebody had done." It's easy enough in certain precincts to caricature armed Americans as an angry and miserable fringe group. But it just isn't true. The data say that the people in the approximately 40 million American households with guns are generally happier than those people in households that don't have guns.
The gun-owning happiness gap exists on both sides of the political aisle. Gun-owning Republicans are more likely than nonowning Republicans to be very happy (46% to 37%). Democrats with guns are slightly likelier than Democrats without guns to be very happy as well (32% to 29%). Similarly, holding income constant, one still finds that gun owners are happiest.
[ Is it contented people who like to buy guns, or is it owning the gun that brings them contentment? The ant-gun lobby must be unhappy with this news. ]

Globally, food prices have risen 40 percent since mid-2007. Haiti, where most people live on less than $2 a day, is particularly affected because it imports nearly all of its food, including more than 80 percent of its rice.

Growing Muslim anti-Semitism worries Israel
A new Israeli study of anti-Semitism with Muslim roots has concluded that the phenomenon is growing, even in Jordan and Egypt, which have peace treaties with Israel, and that "Anti-Semitism and the accompanying hate industry are a strategic danger for Israel and the Jewish people."
The study was conducted by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, a research institute under the aegis of the Israel Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center (IICC), an NGO which commemorates the fallen of Israel's intelligence services.
According to the findings of the study, "generations of Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims are brought up hating the Jews; the peace process is damaged and obstacles to the normalization of Israel's relations withthe Arab countries of the Middle East are erected; indiscriminate Palestinian terrorism against Israel is made palatable, as is Hezbollah's Shi'ite terrorism and that of Al-Qaida, when directed
against Israel and Jews around the world."

American Army engineer gave nuclear secrets to Israel in 1980s
Environment Minister and former senior security official Gideon Ezra said Wednesday that he does not believe Israel's relations with the U.S. will suffer in light of revelations that an American Army engineer spied for Israel in the 1980s.
"Our strategic relationship with the United States is stronger than this," Ezra, a former deputy head of the Shin Bet security services, told Israel Radio.

Black man in UK boasts he infected 1500 women with AIDS
A SERIES of sickening videos have been posted on the internet showing a man who claims to have deliberately "infected" thousands of women with AIDS.
Calling himself 'Trashman' and speaking with an American accent, the masked man says he has infected between 1200 and 1500 unknowing victims with the devastating disease.
"So if I call your name and if you just happen to be on my 'I got the AIDS from that n***er' list', then God bless you."
[ Assuming these women were not raped, they have only themselves to blame for their lack of discrimination. They should pick up a "Darwin Prize". ]

UN refugee agency criticizes Greek asylum practices
The United Nations has sharply criticized Greece for its treatment of asylum applicants and its rate of approval of asylum claims of less than 1 percent, urging the country to reform its practices.
The European Commission is expected to discuss in September whether to increase funding for those countries harboring large numbers of refugees.

Reports of "martial law training" in three US states
Federal law enforcement agencies co-opted sheriffs offices as well state and local police forces in three states last weekend for a vast round up operation that one sheriff's deputy has described as "martial law training".
Law-enforcement agencies in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas took part in what was described by local media as "an anti-crime and anti-terrorism initiative" involving officers from more than 50 federal, state and local agencies.
Given the military style name "Operation Sudden Impact", the initiative saw officers from six counties rounding up fugitives, conducting traffic checkpoints, climbing on boats on the Mississippi River and doing other "crime-abatement" programs all under the label of "anti-terrorism".
WREG Memphis news channel 3 reported that the Sheriff's Department arrested 332 people, 142 of whom were fugitives, or "terrorists" as they now seem to be known.

UN Report Reveals Glaciers Melting at Record Speed
Glaciers across the globe are melting faster than at any point in the last century. Many could disappear within decades, and their decline could cause droughts and chaos for billions of people who depend on rivers fed by glaciers.
This was the sobering message delivered Sunday by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), along with a plea to international leaders to act swiftly and drastically to address climate change, which the UNEP says is to blame for the glacial melt.
According to Haeberli, glacier thickness declined by an average of 0.3 meters a year between 1980 and 1999. But since 2000 the average annual ice loss has increased to about 0.5 meters (20 inches).

Lifespan shortens in parts of the US
For the first time since the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, life expectancy for a significant proportion of the United States is on the decline largely because of an increase in chronic diseases related to obesity, smoking and high blood pressure.
Although life expectancy for all other Western nations and for most of the U.S. has continued to improve over the past several decades, researchers at Harvard University and the University of Washington say many of the worst-off here are getting much worse.
"It is what you would expect to see in a developing country, not here," said Dr. Majid Ezzati, a Harvard professor and lead author of a study published in the open-access journal Public Library of Science Medicine.

Carter: Hamas will accept Israel
Former US President Jimmy Carter has said that Hamas is prepared to accept the right of Israel to "live as a neighbour next door in peace".
After meeting Hamas leaders last week in Syria, he criticised the US and Israel for refusing to meet the group.
Hamas had reiterated its position that it could accept an Israeli state within its pre-1967 borders and live in peace with Israel, he said

Afrocentric school planned in Toronto
A shower of passionately negative e-mails flooded the inboxes of Toronto school board trustees following the decision to create an Afrocentric school in Canada's largest city, according to documents obtained under access to information laws.
"I am grieved to see Toronto try to turn back the clock to those ignominious times of separation," wrote Ellen Nichols, who is white and now lives in Toronto.

McCain is a compelling candidate, particularly because of the Torture Thing. As for the Democratic hope that McCain's temper will be a problem, don't bet on it. A lot of white men have terrible tempers, and what's more, they think it's normal.

How many Arabs are there in Israel?
The latest publicly available brochure on ethnic distribution from Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics is for the year 2003. It shows 15.6% of Arabs are aged 0-4, and 9.1% of Jews are in the same age group.
In 2007, Jews were 5,470,000, and Arabs - 1,449,000. Accordingly, the number of Jews younger than five years is 5,470,000*9.1%=498,000; Arabs are 1,449,000*15.6%=226,000. In 18 years, therefore, Arab voters would be 226,000/498,000=45% the number of Jews.
There are also 4.4% of other peoples in Israel, or approximately 7,241,000*4.4%*9.1%=29,000 younger than five. That makes the Jews approximately 498,000/(498,000+226,000+29,000)=66% of Israel's young population. Jews already lost the supermajority status required for many legislative acts.

The most distinct differences were detected between the cities and the countryside. Eating more vegetables and fruit than other Finns, city people are slightly less obese, even though they also have excess body fat.

Chinese troops are on the streets of Zimbabwean city, witnesses say
Chinese troops have been seen on the streets of Zimbabwe's third largest city, Mutare, according to local witnesses. They were seen patrolling with Zimbabwean soldiers before and during Tuesday's ill-fated general strike called by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
China's support for President Mugabe's regime has been highlighted by the arrival in South Africa of a ship carrying a large cache of weapons destined for Zimbabwe's armed forces. Dock workers in Durban refused to unload it.

Congressman Tancredo Blasts Pope for urging more US immigration
Even though Tancredo attended the pope's birthday reception, he was not happy with Benedict -- at all.
The pope on Wednesday called for welcoming immigrants to the United States and even issued a statement in Spanish telling the Latino community he would urge President Bush to grant legal status to illegal immigrants living in the states.

Texas becoming Mexico
Inexorably, Texas is becoming a Hispanic state. Although natural increase remains a significant component of overall growth, much of it can be attributed to the Hispanic birth rate. In the nineties, the Hispanic population here grew by 53.68 percent, the Anglo population by just 7.61 percent. Anglos ceased to be a majority of the state’s population in 2005, although they still outnumber Hispanics by some 3.2 million. This will not last. Between 2000 and 2040, Texas’s Anglo population is projected to grow by a mere 4.2 percent, while the Hispanic population will grow by 77.6 percent. If net migration continues at the rate of the past fifteen years, Texas will become a majority Hispanic state by 2030.

Immigrants drain US economy for twice deficit cost

U.S. taxpayers are giving more than $9,000 a year in cash or benefits to each immigrant, a third of whom are in the country illegally. That's $36,000 for each immigrant household of four.

Researchers examining what happened to 4,248 families that were randomly given or denied federal housing vouchers to move out of their high-poverty neighborhoods found no significant difference about seven years later between the achievement of children who moved to more middle-class neighborhoods and those who didn't.

According to the Tel Aviv University historian, Prof. Shlomo Sand, author of “Matai ve’ech humtza ha’am hayehudi?” ("When and How the Jewish People Was Invented?”; Resling, in Hebrew), the queen’s tribe and other local tribes that converted to Judaism are the main sources from which Spanish Jewry sprang. This claim that the Jews of North Africa originated in indigenous tribes that became Jewish - and not in communities exiled from Jerusalem - is just one element of the far- reaching argument set forth in Sand’s new book.
In this work, the author attempts to prove that the Jews now living in Israel and other places in the world are not at all descendants of the ancient people who inhabited the Kingdom of Judea during the First and Second Temple period. Their origins, according to him, are in varied peoples that converted to Judaism during the course of history, in different corners of the Mediterranean Basin and the adjacent regions. Not only are the North African Jews for the most part descendants of pagans who converted to Judaism, but so are the Jews of Yemen (remnants of the Himyar Kingdom in the Arab Peninsula, who converted to Judaism in the fourth century) and the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe (refugees from the Kingdom of the Khazars, who converted in the eighth century).

Many populations were formed by either displacement and accretion, or by having collapsed inward and become multicultural, producing a mixed but evenly mixed population afterward. Gypsies, for example, were Muslim mercenaries ejected from India, who wandered the world picking up genetics, and are now more Mediterranean European than anything else. Fear of racial violence pervades UK
Almost two-thirds of people in Britain fear race relations are so poor tensions are likely to spill over into violence, a BBC poll has suggested.
Of the 1,000 people asked, 60% said the UK had too many immigrants and half wanted foreigners encouraged to leave.

Governor Culver has signed into law a bill that will require lawmakers to look at the impact proposed sentencing laws will have on racial and ethnic groups.
The new law comes as Iowa tries to shake the reputation of having the greatest prison racial disparity in the nation.
Culver says the Minority Impact Statement Bill is the first of its kind in the nation. He says it's another step toward the goal of equal justice under the law for every Iowan.

South African dockers refuse to unload China arms shipment for Zimbabwe
South African dockers are refusing to unload a Chinese cargo ship carrying 77 tonnes of small arms destined for Zimbabwe.
The arms, including three million rounds of ammunition suitable for AK47s and 1,500 rocket-propelled grenades, were ordered by the Zimbabwean military at the time of the March 29 election" which Britain and other Western powers have accused Robert Mugabe of trying to rig.
The arms arrived at Durban, South Africa, on Wednesday aboard the Chinese-owned An Yue Jiang and must be taken by road to landlocked Zimbabwe, where the Government has been accused of arming rural militias before a possible run-off vote for the presidency. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has even accused Mr Mugabe's Zanu (PF) of preparing for a "war" against the people.

Modern imperialism in Africa will be less benign than the old colonialism
Fifty years ago the decolonisation of Africa began. The next half-century may see the continent recolonised. But the new imperialism will be less benign. Great powers aren't interested in administering wild places any more, still less in settling them: just raping them. Black gangster governments sponsored by self-interested Asian or Western powers could become the central story in 21st-century African history.
But a solution beckons: buy your own gang. You hardly need visit and are certainly not required to administer the gang's territory. You simply give it support, munitions, bribes and protection to keep the roads and airports open; and it pays you with access to resources. You dress up the arrangement as helping Africans to help themselves. The French, who have been doing this in their former African possessions for years, lead the way. But it is when China, then America, and perhaps even Russia or India follow, that the scramble for Africa will truly be resumed.
Hypocrisy, they say, is the homage that vice pays to virtue. During the last scramble for Africa, colonial administration was the homage greed paid to responsibility. But greed may be less sentimental during the next. From a resource-starved industrialised world in the 21st Century, reponsibility for Africa will get no more than a passing nod.
[ Europe gave up Africa and colonisation because of a political change of heart which involved a switch from the masculine outward movement, to the feminine absorption and taking in (ie taking in immigrants) as a way to relate to the world. This has suited globalist commercial forces, creating low wage workforces in Europe. Now, as resources in Africa are required by these same commercial forces they are all for going back there to take them. ]

Report: Netanyahu says 9/11 terror attacks good for Israel
"We are benefiting from one thing, and that is the attack on the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and the American struggle in Iraq," Ma'ariv quoted the former prime minister as saying. He reportedly added that these events "swung American public opinion in our favor."
Netanyahu reportedly made the comments during a conference at Bar-Ilan University on the division of Jerusalem as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cast doubt over the veracity of the September 11 attacks Thursday, calling it a pretext to invade Afghanistan and Iraq.

Down's syndrome boy with mental age of five is charged under UK race act
When two police officers came to interview Jamie Bauld, a polite, friendly Down's syndrome boy with a mental age of about 5, he welcomed them with a big smile and a handshake. As the officers read him his rights and charged him with assault and racial abuse, he agreed with everything they said, then thanked them for coming to see him.
The officers, Mr Bauld said, were very pleasant and told him not to worry "because the case would come to nothing". They told him they would explain to the Procurator Fiscal that Jamie had Down's syndrome, and that the Asian girl had admitted that she had scratched her own face to mark it and referred to herself as "blackface".
Shortly after the visit came a letter from the Procurator Fiscal in Hamilton saying that the authorities now had enough evidence to charge Jamie.

Protests in many European cities against China's crackdown in Tibet a month ago and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's insistence that she would be prepared to meet with the Dalai Lama again (more...) have given German industry leaders the jitters; they worry that Beijing may start having second thoughts about doing business with German companies.

Feds to collect DNA from every person they arrest
The government plans to begin collecting DNA samples from anyone arrested by a federal law enforcement agency . a move intended to prevent violent crime but which also is raising concerns about the privacy of innocent people.
Expanding the DNA database, known as CODIS, raises civil liberties questions about the potential for misuse of such personal information, such as family ties and genetic conditions.

Jewish Liberals to Launch A Counterpoint to AIPAC
Some of the country's most prominent Jewish liberals are forming a political action committee and lobbying group aimed at dislodging what they consider the excessive hold of neoconservatives and evangelical Christians on U.S. policy toward Israel.
"The genesis of this is really the frustration on the part of a very substantial portion of the American Jewish community that despite the fact that there is broad support for a peace-oriented policy in the Middle East, there doesn't seem to be the political will to actually carry it out," Ben-Ami said. "We have not been effective at transmitting the message that there is political support for these positions in the American Jewish community and their allies."

Forget campaign promises. The next president will face a stack of unpaid bills.
Raising taxes in today's precarious business environment may only make a bad situation worse. The money will have to be borrowed or printed or both. Not a particularly good idea. Printing money, a modern form of debasing the coin of the realm, causes inflation, a subject none of the candidates is dwelling on but which they may have to talk about as the cost of everything continues its climb. Ben Bernanke has been pumping hundreds of billions into the collapsed veins of the financial system to keep the great banks and investment houses from dying.
The situation the incoming president will find him or herself in is not the same as the one that confronted Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal. He was able to deficit-spend to his heart's content without causing inflation because there was so much unused capacity in the country. Factories were idle and fields were fallow, so printing money stimulated production rather than driving up prices.
[ There can be no doubt that America faces an unprecedented crisis which is being somewhat staved off until the end of Bush's reign. ]

McCain gets ousted from board for lack of straight talk
Sen. John McCain, a long-time board member of Project Vote Smart, was kicked off yesterday for failing to provide information about where he stands on key issues.
Project Vote Smart, which aims to try to get past the sound bites to find out where candidates stand on issues, administers the Political Courage Test to pin folks down on exactly where they stand.
The four-page test this year for presidential candidates asks about guns, health care, immigration, national security, education, abortion and many others.
Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama have also refused to submit their responses, but Kimball told us today it was a bit "embarrassing" for PVS that McCain, one of their own board members, refused.

WMU Researchers Create Biofuels from Waste Oil & Algae
Researchers at Western Michigan University (WMU) are working to develop two biofuel production processes that could help the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan move toward environmental sustainability. The goal of the first project, Bronco Biodiesel, is to perfect a process to convert trap grease, used vegetable oil from restaurants and other facilities, into biodiesel. The second project, which is still in its early stages will attempt to find a viable algae strain that could be used for both waste treatment and as a feedstock for biodiesel or ethanol production.
Algae is also on the radar at WMU. The group is currently looking for grant funding to explore using algae as both a feedstock for fuel and, in keeping with the idea of sustainability, in water treatment applications. According to Bertman, the algae project came up when he and his colleagues started looking at the strain that biofuels are putting on the U.S. agricultural system from a sustainability standpoint.

Brigitte Bardot on trial for Muslim slur
French former film star Brigitte Bardot went on trial on Tuesday for insulting Muslims, the fifth time she has faced the charge of "inciting racial hatred" over her controversial remarks about Islam and its followers.
"I am fed up with being under the thumb of this population which is destroying us, destroying our country and imposing its acts," the star of 'And God created woman' and 'Contempt' said.
Bardot has previously said France is being invaded by sheep-slaughtering Muslims and published a book attacking gays, immigrants and the unemployed, in which she also lamented the "Islamisation of France".

In image-conscious France, it may soon be a crime to glamorize the ultra-thin. A new French bill cracks down on Web sites that advise anorexics on how to starve " and could be used to hit fashion industry heavyweights, too.
The groundbreaking bill, adopted Tuesday by Parliament's lower house, recommends fines of up to $71,000 and three-year prison sentences for offenders who encourage "extreme thinness." It goes to the Senate in the coming weeks.

Study: Single parents cost taxpayers $112 billion
Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbearing cost U.S. taxpayers more than $112 billion a year, according to a study commissioned by four groups advocating more government action to bolster marriages.
But Tim Smeeding, an economics professor at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, who was not involved in the study, said he's seen no convincing evidence that the marriage-strengthening programs work.
"I have nothing against marriage -- relationship-building is great," he said. "But alone it's not going to do the job. A full-employment economy would probably be the best thing -- decent, stable jobs."
He also noted the distinctive problems arising in black urban areas where the rate of single-mother households is highest.
[ Blacks have cultural reasons for not embracing marriage, and when you have a multicultural society, values spread, and it's always in the simplest direction, since you can bring people down without much effort but you can't make everyone achieve what whites would call "high" standards (which are "racist" anyway). Bill Cosby summons his inner Malcolm X
From Birmingham to Cleveland and Baltimore, at churches and colleges, Cosby has been telling thousands of black Americans that racism in America is omnipresent but that it can't be an excuse to stop striving. As Cosby sees it, the antidote to racism is not rallies, protests, or pleas, but strong families and communities. Instead of focusing on some abstract notion of equality, he argues, blacks need to cleanse their culture, embrace personal responsibility, and reclaim the traditions that fortified them in the past. Driving Cosby's tough talk about values and responsibility is a vision starkly different from Martin Luther King's gauzy, all-inclusive dream: it's an America of competing powers, and a black America that is no longer content to be the weakest of the lot.
[ Quite right. It's time Blacks started being constructive and positive. It's no use hoping to eradicate "racism" as far as that means the general inability of races to live cheek by jowl however. ]

At Least 36 U.S. States Face Water Shortage
At least 36 states are expected to face water shortages within the next five years, according to U.S. government estimates. Available freshwater supplies are dwindling across the country due to rising temperatures and droughts, while increasing sprawl, population and inefficient resource usage are leading to rising demand.
"Is it a crisis? If we don't do some decent water planning, it could be," said Jack Hoffbuhr, executive director of the American Water Works Association. Rising temperatures due to global warming have increased evaporation rates across the country and reduced the availability of important water sources. One of these is the Sierra Nevada snowpack, which supplies a significant portion of California's water. Across the West, similar trends are expected to reduce flows of the Colorado River, which supplies water for seven states.
Meanwhile, rising sea levels are expected to cause saltwater to infiltrate freshwater aquifers in coastal states, rendering that water unusable.
[ The American government will have to change it's attitude towards environmental policies to lessen climate change. But typically they will wait until the pain is far greater than now, and when it may even be too late. ]

Two Separate Societies: One in Prison, One Not
Forty years ago, the Kerner Commission concluded in its landmark study of the causes of racial disturbances in the United States in the 1960s: "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white -- separate and unequal." Today we are still moving toward two societies: one incarcerated and one not. The Pew Center on the States released a study in February showing that for the first time in this country's history, more than one in every 100 adults is in jail or prison. According to the Justice Department, 7 million people -- or one in every 32 adults -- are either incarcerated, on parole or probation or under some other form of state or local supervision.
African Americans now comprise more than half of all prisoners, up from a third three decades ago.
[ African Americans need to live in their own society with their own values. These statistics also show the dysgenic trend in society, with increasingly inferior people being born. ]

Deportation trick lets illegals skip trial
Some illegal immigrants facing serious criminal charges are avoiding prosecution " with the help of the government " thanks to what prosecutors say is a gaping hole in the state's bail law.
A small but growing number of immigrants charged with crimes are being deported prior to their trials, avoiding any penalty for their actions while in the United States. And once deported, authorities fear, they can return under a new alias and continue their activities.
Until the law changes, however, there's little to stop them.

Blacks killing blacks disproporitionately sets back fight against racial discrimination
What is relevant is this: An FBI analysis of homicide reports from 2005 showed that 45 percent of homicides were white-on-white and 42 percent were black-on-black.
At first glance, that statistic seems meaningless until you consider that there are nearly 200 million white people in America and only about 36 million black people.
The amount of violence that persists in the black community is debilitating to the community and equally detrimental to a culture that has been clamoring for equality even before the ink dried on the Emancipation Proclamation.
How can black people be expected to receive equal treatment when we can't even treat each other as equals? How can we demand to be respected and to be treated civilly when so many of us disrespect each other and act uncivilized?

Poll: 82% of American Christians support Israel
Survey conducted in honor of 60th anniversary finds 65% of American Christians' presidential vote will be affected by candidates' Middle East stance.
A new survey conducted by a Washington DC-based evangelical organization among American Christians has found that 82% of them believe they have a moral obligation to support the Jews and Israel. The poll, conducted among Catholics and Protestants alike, tested their stance on Jerusalem's future and ways to deal with the Iranian nuclear threat.
[ Supporting the right of Israel to exist as a homeland for Jews is fine, but the point of that is that other nations can pursue their own interests instead of the Israeli agenda. These Christians want America to contine to serve Israel. ]

Illegal immigrants might pay taxes
The Social Security Administration estimates that about three-quarters of illegal workers pay taxes that contribute to the overall solvency of Social Security and Medicare.
The agency estimates that for 2005, the last year for which figures are available, about $9 billion in taxes was paid on about $75 billion in wages from people who filed W-2 forms with incorrect or mismatched data, which would include illegal immigrants who drew paychecks under fake names and Social Security numbers.
[ Debunking this propaganda: all workers have social security taken from their paychecks; it is not voluntary. They assume that all misfiled returns from 2005 belonged to illegal aliens. Not a story, it's statistic shuffling to keep you mystified while they steal another hundred million or so. ]

The law opposes real conservation
Mr Lister, whose father created the MFI furniture chain, is spending vast amounts of money working towards the creation of a 50,000 acre reserve, surrounded by an electric fence, and in which the animals (native species which were hunted to extinction - including brown bear, lynx and wolf) would live free.
As a first step towards the reserve he has planted 80,000 traditional trees to join up the fragmented woodland, and the two moose and a breeding population of wild boar have already been released into a 500-acre site.
EU law says that there's no model for a wilderness reserve, that it would simply be a giant zoo and that it is illegal for zoos to house prey and predator together.
[ And it's such a long, big, massive, boring process to get exceptions, and no one wants the responsibility. Maybe our system of law has become calcified and needs to get replaced? ]

China taking over
Europeans have, for half a millennium, been unchallenged as the global colonisers, but last month the respected Economist magazine dubbed the Chinese "The New Colonists".
Canadian authorities were recently alarmed to find the Chinese interested in exploring the Arctic Ocean, in a bid to get a share of the minerals beneath the thawing icecap.
The West has long seen Africa as its backyard, but Western diplomats now worry that not just Africa, but South America, too, is being lost to China.

British Chancellor questions whether biofuels are ethical when there is a food shortage
Alistair Darling has demanded an urgent review of international biofuel programmes as part of a plan to tackle the world's mounting food crisis. The Chancellor said he had asked the World Bank to produce an analysis - for June's G7 meeting of global leaders - on the impact of green policies, including America and Europe's biofuel programmes, on global food shortages.
'This is an urgent problem,' said Darling, who was speaking in Washington at a meeting of G7 leaders. 'People across the world will say, "Why didn't you see this coming?" when it is staring us in the face. We have got to take action.'
He added: 'It would be a profound mistake if we get into a situation where we are growing corn that is essential for feeding people and converting it into fuel. That is not sustainable.'
[ It isn't sustainable to grow biofuels and nor is it sustainable to feed the world. ]

John Gray, a political scientist and philosopher at the London School of Economics, spent the 1980s as a Thatcherite and most of the 1990s as a supporter of Tony Blair and the British New Left. Now, he's stopped taking sides and believes that all of modern politics adds up to a delusional and impossible utopian enterprise that will end not just in failure but in a global-scale tragedy.
He specifically rails against the notion that history is the story of progress toward a better tomorrow.

Violent crime in America
Guns were used in nearly half of the slayings studied in the most comprehensive examination of violent deaths in the United States. More than half of those deaths were due to suicide while 30 percent were the result of homicide.
African-Americans and Native Americans were killed at rates about 50
percent higher than whites, while Asians had violent death rates
about 60 percent lower than whites.
The Hispanic violent death rate was about 15 percent lower than that
of whites.

Jewish cemetaries detroyed in Belarus
Workers rebuilding a sports stadium on the site of an 18th century Jewish cemetery in Belarus say they have no choice but to consign the bones to city dumps.
"It's impossible to pack an entire cemetery into sacks," said worker Mikhail Gubets, adding that he stopped counting the skulls when the number went over 100.
Belarus' president, Alexander Lukashenko, has shown little respect for Jewish culture. In a radio broadcast in October that provoked a sharp protest from the Israeli government, he suggested that when Jews were numerous in another town, Bobruisk, they turned it into "a pigsty."

'World peace' hitcher is murdered
An Italian woman artist who was hitch-hiking to the Middle East dressed as a bride to promote world peace has been found murdered in Turkey.
The naked body of Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, known as Pippa Bacca, was found in bushes near the northern city of Gebze on Friday.
She had said she wanted to show that she could put her trust in the kindness of local people.

Putin wants Russian space industry to shine again
President Vladimir Putin on Friday told officials to beef up Russia's space program and speed financing of a new cosmodrome in the Far East to keep the nation's leading role in space, Russian media reported.
"Now we have the real chance to move from exploiting and supporting previous, often Soviet, 'space capital' to carrying out new, ambitious projects in space," Putin told a meeting of the Security Council.

A legal practice based in London called Keyard Law Associates - who call themselves immigration law specialists - advertised in a Chinese language newspaper offering to "design plans" for immigrants on low incomes to apply for highly-skilled migrant visas.

Artificial colors lower IQ in children
Researchers at Southampton University said developmental damage from seven food additives could lower a child's IQ by up to five points, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
Britain's Food Standards Agency will meet Thursday to consider recommendations that manufacturers voluntarily remove six of the food additives from their products -- tartrazine, quinoline yellow, sunset yellow, carmoisine, ponceau, and allura red.
Further research has been suggested for the seventh additive, the preservative sodium benzoate, the newspaper said.
[ But it was cheaper and more profitable to make fake food. What, you mean it has consequences? But we were just fulfilling our freedom, our dream of wealth, and no one told us we had to care about what it did to others... ]

Refugees from food wars to flood the West
Rising food prices could threaten political stability around the world, the UN's leading humanitarian official said yesterday.
Sir John Holmes, the undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs and the UN's emergency relief co-ordinator, told a conference in Dubai that rising prices would spark unrest across vulnerable nations. Average prices have risen 40 per cent across the world in less than a year.
Sir John said: "The security implications should also not be underestimated as food riots are already being reported across the globe.
As well as the riots in Egypt, rising food costs have been blamed for violent unrest in Haiti, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mauritania, Mozambique and Senegal. Protests have also occurred in Uzbekistan, Yemen, Bolivia and Indonesia.
Experts believe food insecurity should be treated as seriously as climate change.

Overpopulation taboo divides environmentalists
In case you haven't been following the roiling controversy within the Sierra Club, a group of insurgents seeking seats on the Board of Directors have been smeared as radical right-wing extremists by the Club’s fearful permanent officials.
Three outstanding candidates running for the Board believe that America's skyrocketing overpopulation, driven by out-of-control mass immigration, must be addressed. They want the Club to return to the position it held until 1996: to "bring about the stabilization of the population first of the United States and then of the world."
[ In scientific terms, x number of people times y minimum resources = environmental impact. Even if the west cuts back its resource use to nearly nothing, the rest of the world dwarfs it in size and impact, which makes them more environmentally irresponsible for breeding out of control until there are six billion of them -- while the West has kept its numbers consistent and growth low. The third world, and the proliferation of idiots in the first world, is the source of our environmental crisis, not a failure to recycle tampons, turn off taps, disconnect sleeping appliances and clothe ourselves in newspaper. ]

Snotty superiority complex encouraged by liberal thinking
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama came under fire on Friday for saying small-town Pennsylvania residents were "bitter" and "cling to guns or religion," in comments his rivals said showed an elitist view of the middle class.
"It shows an elitism and condescension toward hard-working Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking," said Steve Schmidt, a senior adviser to the Arizona senator. "It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."
[ Liberalism is based on the idea that making people feel morally superior to others for unrealistic altruism is a path to power. Obama is exploiting this and using race to his advantage. It's a good working proof that "altruism" is garbage, although love for people on the same page as you are is not -- and that is the basis of the organic state. ]

Switzerland rejects "financier of terrorism" label
Switzerland rejected accusations on Tuesday by the U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that it could be financing terrorism after a Swiss company clinched a multi-billion euro (dollar) deal to buy natural gas from Iran.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry reiterated that the purchase did not violate U.N. Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme or U.S. domestic law.
The American Jewish group's full-page advertisement -- which follows a complaint lodged by Israel with Switzerland over the deal -- appeared on Tuesday in newspapers under the banner "Guess who is the world's newest financier of terrorism? SWITZERLAND".
[ It's just business. Oh... then maybe "just business" is a problem. Israel fears the ability of Iran and other Islamic states to wage modern war. I guess it was a terrible idea for them not to endorse National Socialism as salvation for all ethnic groups, because it would give them a political basis to stand on in this coming struggle. ]

In fact, many animals prefer to mate with their brothers, sisters and other relatives. Humans, too, might even favor kissing cousins. Zamudio and Chandler published their findings last month in Molecular Ecology. Other researchers have uncovered the same surprising trend in species of fish, birds and beetles.
But inbreeding can have its perks, says Patrick Bateson, a biologist at the University of Cambridge in England. Many organisms might have slight genetic tweaks or adaptations tuned to their local habitats, and too much genetic mixing with outsiders can dilute these adaptations, he says. For instance, horticulturalists self-fertilize plants to preserve genes that confer advantages like pest resistance. "What you see then is a kind of trade-off between the
costs of inbreeding and the costs of outbreeding," Bateson says. "It's not that inbreeding as such is beneficial. It's getting the balance between inbreeding and outbreeding that is important."

Race has scientific validity, function
As the human genome was mapped in 2000, Francis Collins, the head of the publicly funded project, together with his privately funded rival, announced that humans were 99.9 percent the same at the level of their genome.
That same year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began a research program on pharmacogenetics that would exploit the .01 percent of human genetic difference, increasingly understood in racial terms, to advance the field of pharmacy.
First, this article addresses Collins' summary of what he called the `vigorous debate' on the relationship between race and genetics in the open-access special issue of Nature Genetics entitled `Genetics for the Human Race' in
2004. Second, it examines the most vexed (if not always openly stated) issue at stake in the debate: that many geneticists today work with the assumption that human biology differs by race as it is conceived through American census categories.
It then presents interviews with researchers in two collaborating US laboratories who collect and organize DNA by American notions of `race/ethnicity' and assume that US race categories of classification largely traduce human biogenetic difference.
It concludes that race is a practical and conceptual tool whose utility and function is often taken for granted rather than rigorously assessed and that `rational medicine' cannot precede a rational approach to addressing the nature of racial disparities, difference and inequality in health and society more broadly.

Chinese cyber war against the West
Computer intruders targeting pro-Tibetan groups, U.S. defense contractors and government agencies slipped in through previously unknown security holes in Microsoft Office, prompting Microsoft to issue a flurry of patches to the popular software suite in 2006 and 2007, according to computer security experts.
These attacks, which appeared to have originated in China, began in early 2006 when the attackers started sending e-mails to victims with booby-trapped Word documents and Excel spreadsheets attached.

RFID tags can track your motion
RFID-manufacturer Alien Technology announced this week it has created new software for its tag readers. The software provides information on the velocity and position of tags, and can thereby distinguish between adjacent tagged objects such as luggage.
The spread of RFID technology has raised concerns about privacy. But Alien Technology says such fears are baseless. "The information on an RFID tag is tied to a database associated to an inventory," said Ronny Haraldsvik, vice president of marketing. He draws the parallel to license plates on cars.
[ The license plate metaphor does nothing for me. These small tags will be useful for business and government, but that data can be used for destructive purposes. ]

Murdered Pregnant Women: The Racial Divide
When Laci Peterson became the symbol of maternal homicide in the mass media and in the law books (the Violence Against Unborn Children Act is also known as the Laci and Connor's Law), it put a white face on the horrendous crime of maternal homicide. In reality, that face is actually young, and often, black.
According to the CDC, black women have a maternal homicide risk about seven times that of white women. Black women ages 25-29 are about 11 times more likely as white women in that age group to be murdered while pregnant or in the year after childbirth.
[ The public has to be given the impression that no such racial divide exists, thus a white woman has to represent a situation far more common amongst blacks. Multiculturalism fails. ]

Global White Population to Plummet to Single Digit, Black Population to Double
The big population story of the 21st Century is shaping up to be the status reversal of whites and blacks and the Indian baby boom
As a percentage of world inhabitants, the white population will plummet to a single digit (9.76%) by 2060 from a high-water mark of 27.98% in 1950.
Using 2010 as the base reference, the big gainer in the population derby will be blacks or sub-Sahara Africans. This group will expand almost 133% to 2.7 billion by 2060. By the middle of this century blacks will represent 25.38% of world population, which is up dramatically from the 8.97% they recorded in 1950.

Södertälje mayor Anders Lago received praise while in Washington this week from US presidential candidate Barak Obama and other members of congress for how well his city has handled its influx of Iraqi refugees.
Södertälje, a town of 80,000 residents, has taken in more Iraqi refugees that the United States and Canada combined, a fact which has come to light in several US media recently, and the motivation behind Lago's invitation to testify before the Congressional panel.

Haiti food riots ease but critics demand PM's head
Taxis, vendors and shoppers returned to the debris-strewn streets of the Haitian capital on Thursday after the president appealed for an end to food riots, but the government came under fire from opposition politicians for not doing enough.
In a letter signed by 16 of Haiti's 27 senators, the opposition demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis after a week of violent demonstrations over the rising cost of living in which at least five people died.
The riots, which began in the south of the poorest country in the Americas and spread to Port-au-Prince on Monday, pitted tear gas- and rubber bullet-firing U.N. peacekeepers against thousands of hungry Haitians enraged over the high price of rice, beans and other food staples.

High School teacher suspended for calling students "trailer trash"
Education officials in Marshall County have suspended a John Marshall High School teacher after she admitted to calling her students trailer trash."
The controversial remarks have some local parents upset. The teacher claims the comment was made because of stress.
She admitted to the school board that she sent a memo to her students saying: "If you want to act like trailer trash, I'll treat you like trailer trash."

Cathedral bans popular hymn Jerusalem

Smart women turn to marriage
"There's something new going on, particularly among women," said researcher Genevieve Heard of the university's Centre for Population and Urban Research.
Women with a university degree are more likely to marry than their less-educated sisters, according to Australian research released Monday that reverses long-held views about bookish females.
But the group more likely to be married had reversed within the decade; with 61 percent of women aged 30 to 34 with degrees or higher married by 2006, compared with 53 percent of women in the same age group with no post-school qualifications.

Immigration reform stalled in UK courts
The government suffered a blow today when new, tougher immigration rules for skilled workers who want to remain in the UK were declared unlawful by the high court.
Critics claimed that up to 90% of the 49,000 migrants who came to work in the UK under the original scheme faced being deported because they would have to reapply under the stricter new points-based system.
The judge said failing to act in favour of immigrants would amount to "conspicuous unfairness" and "an abuse of power".

Westerners wealthier, healthier and less happy
Britons are enjoying a higher standard of living and are healthier than they were 30 years ago, yet few are satisfied, according to a survey published today.
In 2006, men were expected to live until 77 years of age, while life expectancy for women was 82. This compares with 69 for men and 75 for women in 1971.
Household wealth has more than doubled in the UK since 1987 with spending on goods and services in 2006 approximately two and a half times higher than in 1971.
But eightfold growth in the volumes of consumption for recreation, leisure and tourist expenditure abroad over the last three decades suggests that free time and developing a work-life balance is increasingly important to Brits today.

TV in bedroom = fat, dumb teens
Teenagers with a bedroom television tend to have poorer diet and exercise habits and lower grades in school than those without one, U.S. researchers said on Monday.
Twice as many of the teens with a bedroom TV were classified as heavy TV watchers -- at least five hours a day -- compared to those without one.
Girls with a bedroom television reported getting less vigorous exercise -- 1.8 hours per week compared to 2.5 hours for girls without a TV. They also ate fewer vegetables, drank more sweetened beverages and ate meals with their family less often, the researchers said.

Clinton becomes "the white candidate"
Whites who said race was important in picking their candidate have been about twice as likely to back Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as Sen. Barack Obama.
Exit polls of voters in Democratic primaries also show that whites who considered the contender's race . Clinton is white, Obama is black . were three times likelier to say they would only be satisfied with Clinton as the nominee than if Obama were chosen.
Whites who said race influenced their decision were outnumbered more than six to one by those saying it was insignificant. Whites who say they discounted race also leaned toward Clinton, though by more modest margins.
Obama has trailed Clinton, the New York senator, among whites nationally yet won the white vote in six state primaries. He leads overwhelmingly with blacks.

Europeans accuse Israel of Nazism
The next UN investigator into Israel conduct in the occupied territories has stood by comments comparing Israeli actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.
Speaking to the BBC, Professor Richard Falk said he believed that up to now Israel had been successful in avoiding the criticism that it was due.
Professor Falk is scheduled to take up his post for the UN Human Rights Council later in the year.

Hasidic sects successfully seek political assistance for their very specific needs
From the moment in 1999 when four men from this Hasidic village were convicted of swindling millions of dollars from the government, the campaign to protest the convictions, and perhaps win the men's early release from prison, was started. It was straightforward from the outset.
... later, clemency was granted, setting off cries of protest from the prosecutors who had won the convictions and from politicians of all parties. Questions were raised about the propriety of the clemency -- the men had their sentences reduced to a maximum of 30 months from a maximum of 78 months -- and whether more had been brokered in that first meeting in August than anyone has admitted.
The crux of the story of the clemency -- whether it was negotiated explicitly before the election -- may never be known. But the episode involving the New Square clemency deal sheds light on both the perceived political value of Hasidic sects and their often naked efforts to seek political assistance for their very specific needs.

The Fiscal Impact of Immigration
Immigration: As some experts tell Congress to fight a possible recession with more immigrants, a respected economist warns that immigration's costs are grossly underestimated -- because the government won't study them.
Set for release Tuesday is a report published by Social Contract magazine, "The Fiscal Impact of Immigration: An Analysis of the Costs to 15 Federal Departments and Agencies."
Rubenstein found that each immigrant costs taxpayers more than $9,000, while every immigrant household of four costs $36,000 in taxes. That's far more than the $3,408 in 2007 dollars the National Research Council's 1997 "New Americans" study of federal, state and local government expenditures found immigrants to cost.

'Ruthlessness gene' discovered?
Researchers at Hebrew University in Jerusalem have found a link between a gene called AVPR1a and ruthless behavior. These findings come from an economic exercise called the 'Dictator Game' that allows players to behave selflessly, or like national dictators and 'little Hitlers' found in workplaces the world over. The team decided to look at AVPR1a because it is known to produce receptors in the brain that detect vasopressin, a hormone involved in 'prosocial' behavior. Researchers tested DNA samples from more than 200 student volunteers, before asking the students to play the game that measured their altruism. There was no connection between the participants' gender and their behavior but there was a link to the length of the AVPR1a gene.

Salmon disappearance could bring fishing ban
The stunning collapse of one of the West Coast's biggest wild salmon runs has prompted even cash-strapped fishermen to call for an unprecedented shutdown of salmon fishing off the coasts of California
and Oregon.
The Sacramento River chinook run is usually one of the most productive on the Pacific Coast, providing the bulk of the salmon caught by sport and commercial trollers off California and Oregon.
But only about 90,000 adult chinook returned to the Central Valley last fall -- the second lowest number on record and well below the number needed to maintain a healthy fishery. That number is projected to fall to a record low of 58,000 this year. By contrast, 775,000 adults were counted in the Sacramento River and its tributaries as recently as 2002.
"This stock got off-the-charts bad very suddenly," said Donald McIsaac, the council's executive director. "It's a very, very severe situation."

Survivalism goes mainstream as society collapses
Faced with a confluence of diverse threats — a tanking economy, a housing crisis, looming environmental disasters, and a sharp spike in oil prices — people who do not consider themselves extremists are starting to discuss doomsday measures once associated with the social fringes.
They stockpile or grow food in case of a supply breakdown, or buy precious metals in case of economic collapse. Some try to take their houses off the electricity grid, or plan safe houses far away. The point is not to drop out of society, but to be prepared in case the future turns out like something out of “An Inconvenient Truth,” if not “Mad Max.”
Barton M. Biggs, the former chief global strategist at Morgan Stanley, writes in his new book, “Wealth, War and Wisdom,” he says people should “assume the possibility of a breakdown of the civilized infrastructure.”

Norway was at the top of the OECD list of foreign aid givers measured by percentage of income, but it didn’t come close to fulfilling its stated goals.
In 2007, foreign aid increased 0.6 percent to USD 3.28 billion, up from USD 2.95bn in 2006, according to new figures released by the OECD.
This puts Norway at the top of the list in terms of brutto national income (BNI) national income, pushing Sweden down a notch from last year’s top spot, and makes Norway the eleventh-largest single contributor among the 22 OECD lands.

Media icon accidentally spits out truth
Unchecked global warming and an exploding population could result in
cannibalism, controversial U.S. former media mogul Ted Turner says.
If global warming isn't stemmed, "we'll be 8 degrees hotter in 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow," Turner said during PBS' "Charlie Rose."
"Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals," said Turner, 69. "Civilization will have broken down. The few people left will be living in a failed state ... living conditions
will be intolerable."
Population control can help combat global warming he said. People should voluntarily pledge to have only one or two children, the founder of CNN in Atlanta said.
"We're too many people; that's why we have global warming," he said.

If characters from "The Hills" were to emote about race, I imagine it would sound like B. Hussein Obama's autobiography, "Dreams From My Father."

When his mother expresses concern about Obama's high school friend being busted for drugs, Obama says he patted his mother's hand and told her not to worry.
This, too, prompted Obama to share with his readers a life lesson on how to handle white people: "It was usually an effective tactic, another one of those tricks I had learned: People were satisfied so long as you were courteous and smiled and made no sudden moves. They were more than satisfied, they were relieved -- such a pleasant surprise to find a well-mannered young black man who didn't seem angry all the time."

San Francisco proclaims itself "warm feelings zone"

Young Black Men Are At Higher Risk Of Suicide than Whites
A study examining suicide rates and pre-suicide clinical symptoms in people from different ethnic groups, has found that rates of suicide vary between ethnic groups with young black men aged 13 to 24 at highest risk.
The research, published April 1, 2008 in the medical journal Psychiatric Services, suggests that symptoms traditionally associated with suicide are less common among some ethnic groups, and cannot be relied upon for predicting suicide.

Ethnic groups disagree on what "morality" is
For the first time, the school system provided student achievement data in areas related to character and morality development. Officials used information from elementary school report cards, student surveys and school discipline rates to determine student performance in these areas.
Data showed a significant gap between elementary and middle school students who are white or Asian and those who are black or Hispanic in areas like “demonstrates sound moral character and ethical judgment,” “contributes effectively within a group dynamic,” has “skills to manage and resolved conflicts” and “develop practical life skills.”
White and Asian students performed better in these areas than other minority groups as well as students with limited English, students who are poor, and students receiving special education services.

Jared Taylor to speak at Texas A&M
The other man that is dangerous and just appeared on campus April 1 is Jared Taylor. He was invited by a student organization called Aggie Independents. This guy proclaims that diversity is our problem and demands that those who oppose his viewpoints to offer one refutation.
Taylor is nothing new...he is a new packaging on an old evil.
But perhaps that is why you don't see liberals talking on campus in contrast. We don't want a world where everyone is alike. My ideal world includes conservatives, whites, and heterosexuals...it just includes everyone else equally as well.
I've been at Texas A&M for 10 years and watched it leave these kinds of voices behind during the Robert Gates era. I'm saddened to see these evil voices coming back at the invitation of Aggies.
Many say that freedom of speech is protected. And, yes it is. That is not my complaint. I would say that Hitler would be in his rights to speak on the A&M campus (and U.T. or anywhere). What I think we should be alarmed is not that these folks say what they say. What we should be alarmed about is that folks like this are INVITED by recognized Texas A&M student organizations and presented in an environment in which the opposite voice is never heard on campus.

New evidence of earliest North Americans
New evidence shows humans lived in North America more than 14,000 years ago, 1,000 years earlier than had previously been known. Discovered in a cave in Oregon, fossil feces yielded DNA indicating these early residents were related to people living in Siberia and East Asia, according to a report in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science.
"This is the first time we have been able to get dates that are undeniably human, and they are 1,000 years before Clovis," said Dennis L. Jenkins, a University of Oregon archaeologist, referring to the Clovis culture, well known for its unique spear-points that have been studied previously.
Jenkins said it isn't clear exactly who these people living in the Oregon caves were, since there were few artifacts found. He said there was one stone tool, a hand tool used perhaps to polish or grind or mash bones or fat.
"We are not saying that these people were of a particular ethnic group. At this point, we know they most likely came from Siberia or Eastern Asia..."

Witchdoctors in Tanzania harvest body parts of albinos, baldies, and others
Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete has condemned witchdoctors who kill albinos and harvest their body parts in the hope it will bring prosperity.
He said 19 albinos had been murdered since March 2007, and another two were missing presumed dead in the east African country.
"Sometimes, word spreads around that body parts of people with certain physical attributes like bald people or albinos contribute greatly to attaining quick prosperity," Kikwete said in a monthly state of the

In public, NATO is demanding that all allies contribute their fair share to the ongoing effort in Afghanistan. But behind closed doors, a paper has been circulated that may provide the beginnings of an exit strategy. Germany is pushing the plan.

Poll: 81 percent think US on wrong track
NEW YORK - More than 80 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, the highest such number since the early 1990s, according to a new survey.
The CBS News-New York Times poll released Thursday showed 81 percent of respondents said they believed "things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track." That was up from 69 percent a year ago, and 35 percent in early 2002.

Americans "ready for black president"
The number of Americans who believe that the country is ready for a black president is rising, a poll released Thursday suggested.
More than three quarters, 76 percent, of respondents in a CNN/Essence Magazine/Opinion Research Corp. poll said the country is ready to be led by an African-American, up 14 percentage points since December 2006.
The poll was conducted by telephone from March 26 to April 2, with 2,184 Americans questioned, including 1,014 blacks and 1,001 whites.

No racial bias in IQ testing
The nearly universal assumption that intelligence is not different are based on the central claim that all IQ tests are invalid. There are no IQ tests that show the races to be the same, though there have been few that score uneducated criminals higher than college educated police officers in "street" IQ. This is the classic "all of the evidence to the contrary is wrong, even if there is no evidence to support my contention, therefore you cannot disprove the zero hypothesis of equality". However, high Asian scores are inconsistent with racist bias, since that would imply the Asian advantage is based on unfair discrimination against whites.
When they come ahead, Asians come up 5 to 10 points higher than average, or about 1/3 to 1/2 as far ahead of whites as whites are ahead of blacks. Asians as a group aren't as high as Jews, but Chinese and Indians broken out separately do nearly as well on SAT tests. Asians fall behind in culturally based measures such as english skills or "document literacy", but are uniformly better in math tests except when matching unusually poor Asians with exceptionally affluent whites, such as in Seattle.
[ IQ is distributed unequally within ethnic groups as well. For example, there are many whites below 100. Historically, the societies that have risen to do great things in art, architecture, literature, science, philosophy and religion have been the ones who were least hospitable to the lower clines of intelligence. ]

Link between pirate software and terrorism is spurious
Attorney General Michael Mukasey claims that terrorists sell pirated software as a way to finance their operations, without presenting a shred of evidence for his case. He's doing it to push through a
controversial piece of legislation that's bad for you.
Mukasey went on to cite numerous cases in which the Justice Department has arrested those who pirate software, and in which the department has cooperated with other countries in investigations. He mentioned arrests in Florida, investigations in China, and warned about the Russian mob being involved in selling pirated software.
In not a single instance did Mukasey include a link to terrorism.

US plans to build part of a missile-defense system on Czech soil seen as threat to Russia
The U.S. and the Czech Republic wrapped up an agreement today that would allow the Americans to build part of a missile-defense system on Czech soil, advancing a project that has stoked sharp opposition from Russia.
The agreement, which may be signed in early May, came as NATO allies met in Bucharest for a three-day summit to discuss issues sensitive to Russia, such as expanding the alliance into former Soviet territory. The Czechs will host a radar installation to track ballistic missiles from rogue states such as Iran.
The U.S. has said it wants to reassure Russia that the defense system is intended to intercept attacks from ``rogue'' nations in the Middle East, such as Iran, and isn't aimed at Russia. The Russian government has viewed with scepticism the deployment of military hardware so close to its territory.

According to the FBI, "eco-terrorism", or "ecotage", is now the number one domestic terrorism threat in the US, greater than that of rightwing extremists, anti-abortion groups and animal rights organisations, and on a par with al-Qaida. The US building industry, rightwing political groups and the mainstream media all leapt to condemn the ELF after the arson. "We've seen this grow over the years and it's very scary," said Brian Minnich of the Building Industry Association of Washington, which offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the arsonists.
"It tends to be done by young, intelligent people," says FBI special agent Robbie Burroughs. "There is nothing to suggest that [the Street of Dreams arson attack] is anything else than terrorism."

France and Germany combine forces to thwart the membership ambitions of Ukraine and Georgia
On the first day of the NATO summit in Bucharest on Wednesday, US President George W. Bush suffered a first setback when he failed to persuade the alliance to open the door to Ukraine and Georgia for membership. France and Germany stood firm in their opposition, despite the pressure Bush had piled on in the run-up to the summit with a visit to Ukraine and a keynote speech in which he urged his European allies to reward both countries for their democratic revolutions.
As for Ukraine, the fact that the majority of its population opposes membership spoke against opening up the path to membership right now.
As German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Bucharest for the summit on Wednesday, she reiterated her opposition to admitting the two former Soviet republics. "We have reached the conclusion that it is too early to give both countries MAP status," she said. While Canada, the United Kingdom and many Eastern European countries had backed the US push to see the NATO alliance expand eastwards, France and Germany have warned that this would unnecessarily provoke Russia, which has voiced concerns about the alliance's expansion to its borders.

Survey: Fla. Teens Believe Drinking Bleach Will Prevent HIV
A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.
They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said.
It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention.

Demands for crackdown on biofuels scam
The EU is being urged to take action to stop a biofuel trading scam that exploits US agricultural subsidies and undermines the fight against global warming.
Up to 10% of biofuel exports from the US to Europe are believed to be part of the rogue scheme reaping big profits for agricultural trading firms.
The "splash and dash" scam involves shipping biodiesel from Europe to the US where a dash of fuel is added, allowing traders to claim 11p a litre of US subsidy for the entire cargo. It is then shipped back and sold below domestic prices, undercutting Europe's biofuel industry.
The trade is not illegal, but flouts the spirit of producing green fuel by transporting it needlessly across the Atlantic at a time when campaigners are voicing concern about emissions from global shipping.

US cites recession fear in climate talks
The EU has proposed that industrialized countries slash emissions of greenhouse gases by 25 percent to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 as part of global climate pact. The U.S., one of the world's top polluters, has repeatedly rejected mandatory national reduction targets of the kind agreed to under the Kyoto Protocol a decade ago.
"If you push the globe into recession, it certainly isn't going to help the developing world," Harlan Watson, head of the U.S. delegation in Bangkok, told The Associated Press Wednesday. "Exports go down, and many of the developing countries of course are heavily dependent on exports. So there's a lot of issues which need to be fleshed out ... so people understand the real world.

Moves by “green” consumers and nations to cut energy use will prove pointless if oil-producing states simply maintain production even as prices fall, so that other countries more careless of the dangers of global warming then buy, and burn, all the fuel saved, enjoying an implicit subsidy from the West as they do so. Just as we are all “turning to 30”, the growth-hungry powerhouses of China and India will be stepping up their carbon-intensive policies of rapid economic expansion, while Americans will be able cruise their freeways in SUVs even more cheaply.
Unfortunately, the perverse politics and economics of energy supply, and of the world’s oil-producing states, mean this is exactly what will happen.

Germany World Export Leader, Ahead of Even China, for the Fifth Year Running
Last year manufacturing output grew by more than 6%. Exports rose more than 8%, making Germany the world export leader, ahead of even China, for the fifth year running, with total trade of €969 billion (758 billion). Overall, the German economy expanded in 2007 by 2.5%, with external trade accounting for 1.4% of this growth.
It could be argued that, 20 years after the end of communism, in terms of trade the old 19th century map of Europe is once more beginning to emerge, with Germany at the centre and Russia an increasingly significant trading partner. Throw in the German federal budget surplus of €200m and suddenly it seems the Germans are sitting pretty, astride Europe and conquering the world.
Germany’s manufacturing might is down to family-owned firms that do not subscribe to Anglo-Saxon notions of “shareholder value”. They are paternal towards their workforces, the products they make, the interests of their customers and the sustainability of their companies.

Max Mosley: Nazi Orgy Lie. Says He Merely Spoke German to a German Whore.
Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, has said that he spoke in German during a sado-masochistic orgy with five prostitutes not because he was fantasising about being a Nazi but because several of the prostitutes involved were German speakers.
The News of the World alleged that Mosley, who is facing calls to resign from one of the most powerful jobs in motor sport, spanked at least one prostitute with a leather strap and counted out the strokes in German as he did so. Reyes points to a 5-foot dirt hill lined with fencing, shrubs and trees for the explicit purpose of absorbing incoming rounds from San Fernando Road. While Los Angeles talks a big game about being the 21st century city, we're essentially reverting to moats and castles with a dot-com face-lift.

IQ a good predictor of intelligence
Many intellectuals dismiss [heritable IQ] out of hand, having been convinced by Stephen Jay Gould's book The Mismeasure of Man that general intelligence does not exist and that there is no evidence for its heritability. But a decade ago, the American Psychological Association commissioned an ideologically and racially diverse panel of scientists to review the evidence.
They reported that IQ tests measure a stable property of the person; that general intelligence reflects a real phenomenon (namely, that measures of different aspects of intelligence intercorrelate); that it predicts a variety of positive life outcomes; and that it is highly heritable among individuals within a group.

Third North American Secessionist Convention
The Middlebury Institute has announced that the Third North American Secessionist Convention will be held in Manchester, New Hampshire, on November 14-16, 2008.
Delegates are expected from a majority of the three-dozen current secessionist organizations in the United States and Canada. As in the two previous conventions - in Burlington, Vermont, in 2006, and Chattanooga, Tennesssee, in 2007 - delegations will give reports on the activities in their areas in the previous year and trade information on strategizing, organizing, and politicking.
One highlight of the meeting will be a presentation of the idea of an independent Atlantic federation of Canadian maritime provinces and northern New England states. The proposal has been around for a number of years, but recently there has been renewed interest, especially in Canada, and this venue will provide a way to introduce it in this country in an impactful way.

Americans Little or No Happier than Previous Generations were
Despite the sharp rise in our standard of living in recent decades, Americans today are little or no happier than earlier generations. Why not?
The standout cluster was what the authors label "engaging leisure and spiritual activities," things like visiting friends, exercising, attending church, listening to music, fishing, reading a book, sitting in a cafe or going to a party. When we spend time on our favorite of these activities, we're typically happy, engrossed and not especially stressed.
In other words, both men and women had the chance to lavish more time on "engaging leisure and spiritual activities." But in fact, time spent on these activities has actually declined over the past four decades.
Instead, there's been a significant increase in the hours devoted to what the authors call "neutral downtime," which is mostly watching television. Women now spend 15% of their waking hours staring at the tube, while men devote 17%.

Swiss Ambassador Claims Kosovo leaders kidnapped Serbs and sold their organs
Carla del Ponte, a former prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in the Hague, now Switzerland’s Ambassador to Argentina, made a sensational announcement. Her autobiographical book “The Hunt” reveals that Serbian men have been kidnapped and their organs were sold to international traffickers.
District Court of Belgrade has already started the hearing of 300 young Serbians being kidnapped in the summer of 1999, who as del Ponte claims, were transported to Albania and had there their internal organs removed.
Belgrade ’s Press shows the evidence that many Serbian organizations tried to make ICTY investigate crimes made by Albanians in Kosovo, mailed detailed maps of the concentration camps in the north of Kosovo and in the north of Albania. However, no investigation was ever initiated. In the recent interview to the Italian La Stampa Carla del Ponte convinced that today a war criminal’s pursuit is connected with solely politics. It’s not by chance that her book was released only after Prishtina proclaimed independence.

As we approach the second decade of the 21st century, research shows that many Americans feel anxious during interracial interactions whether or not race is even mentioned.

Despite Less Poverty and Greater Prominence, African Americans Still feel Cheated
Where they go wrong is by engaging in demagoguery that paints blacks as the relentless victims of racist conspiracies that have no basis in fact, such as the often-repeated claims that the government intentionally introduced illegal drugs and the AIDS virus into black communities.
I routinely hear African-Americans say that not only has nothing changed for blacks in this country, but that in fact things have gotten worse. In a survey last year by the Pew Research Center, only 20% of blacks said things have gotten better for them in the past five years, the lowest percentage since 1983. Only 44% said they think life for blacks will get better in the future, down from 57% in a 1986 survey.
Yet the amount of progress African-Americans have made in this country over time is phenomenal. The indicators include the steady increase in the number of blacks with high school diplomas, who have college degrees or are attending college; the decline in African-Americans living in poverty; the increase in the number of black elected officials and the number who have held Cabinet positions; the presence of four African-Americans as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies; the dominance of black athletes in pro sports; and, whether or not one likes their music or the roles they play, the high visibility of black performers in the music, television and movie industries.
[ They are determined to play the role of oppressed victims, and that even applies in Africa. Maybe things really did only get better for 20% though - that's not a bad result considering things got worse for the general population! ]

Why Americans Never Vote for What They Really Want
American voters are a contradictory bunch: They say they want social welfare, but don't want to pay for it. They claim they are left-leaning, but vote for center-right candidates. Only candidates who can appeal to both sides stand a chance.
The overwhelming majority of Americans are troubled by the social injustices in their country. They dream of a nation in which bridges do not collapse and with a school system in which drug dealers are not the main authority figures. No one doubts that, politically at least, they want to see these shortcomings corrected.
[ It all comes down to selfishness. They want everyone else to behave in the way that makes society easiest to live in, but they don't want to make self-sacrifices, like voting for tax increases, to pay for that. Democracy fails. ]

Black Women Angered By Sharpton's Defense of Black Rapists
Al Sharpton and the local chapter of the NAACP have gotten themselves into trouble with black women for trying to turn the Dunbar Village rape case into a showpiece of racial injustice.
During the past three weeks, a network of about 30 black women bloggers have been blistering Sharpton and the local NAACP for coddling the black teenagers accused taking a neighborhood woman at gunpoint into her West Palm Beach home, raping her and forcing her to have sex with her own pre-teen son.
"It is breathtaking that the National Action Network brain trust can't seem to comprehend the difference between a home invasion by masked gunmen who torture, rape, sodomize, cut, burn, and beat their victims for THREE HOURS and culminate the event with crime against nature committed against a 12-year-old child ... and a case involving NONE of those facts," Fenton wrote.
[ Looks like these women noticed that Sharpton's stance was anti-woman and that couldn't be justified by his attempts to make a dubious claim of racism. ]

The FBI defines eco-terrorism "as the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally oriented, subnational group for environmental-political reasons, or aimed at an audience beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature."
For years, officials have battled against members of shadowy groups such as the Earth Liberation Front and its brother-in-arms, the Animal Liberation Front.
"Generally speaking, the Earth Liberation folks are motivated by a deep kind of affective connection to nature that many of them would characterize as spiritual or religious," said Bron Taylor, a professor of religion and nature at the University of Florida. "They believe that the human species is perpetrating a war on nature and that those who are connected to nature and belong to it have a right to defend themselves."
FBI estimates place damages from these attacks at well over $100 million.

62% of liberals report bad mental health
While 58 percent of Republicans reported having excellent mental health, only 38 percent of Democrats described themselves that way.
The study was no surprise to D. Lyle H. Rossiter, Jr., a noted psychiatrist and author of a controversial book that makes the clinical case liberalism is a mental illness.
"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded," says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness." "Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."

"Right-wing Populist" Label used to Discredit
The label "right-wing populist" resonates negatively today the same way that "communist" did in the '50s and '60s, "fascist" did in the '70s and '80s and "climate change denier" does today. It saves the speaker from having to engage with the actual content of the argument and makes the bearer of the term solely responsible for the consequences of his or her actions.

US Women Soldiers More Likely To Get Raped Than Killed In Iraq
The stories are shocking in their simplicity and brutality: A female military recruit is pinned down at knifepoint and raped repeatedly in her own barracks. Her attackers hid their faces but she identified them by their uniforms; they were her fellow soldiers. During a routine gynecological exam, a female soldier is attacked and raped by her military physician. Yet another young soldier, still adapting to life in a war zone, is raped by her commanding officer. Afraid for her standing in her unit, she feels she has nowhere to turn.
These are true stories, and, sadly, not isolated incidents. Women serving in the U.S. military are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.
41% of female veterans seen at the clinic say they were victims of sexual assault while in the military, and 29% report being raped during their military service.

Obama's Former Pastor Scares off White Indiana Voters
Andrea Helmer was interested in Barack Obama until she heard sound bites of his fiery pastor's sermons. Last week, she volunteered for Hillary Clinton's campaign in Indiana.
``As things came out regarding some of the things his pastor has said, I got concerned,'' said Helmer, a 36-year-old respiratory therapist and mother of two in Evansville, Indiana.
[ I'm sure the media could find close associates of all Presidential candidates who say things that, if given enough publicity, would scare off voters. Report: Low grad rates in US cities
Seventeen of the nation's 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent, with the lowest graduation rates reported in Detroit, Indianapolis and Cleveland, according to a report released Tuesday.
The report, issued by America's Promise Alliance, found that about half of the students served by public school systems in the nation's largest cities receive diplomas. Students in suburban and rural public high schools were more likely to graduate than their counterparts in urban public high schools, the researchers said.

Few Women who Delay Having Babies are Career-mad Singletons
New Government figures show a steep rise in the number of British women having babies in their 40s. Conceptions in this age group are rising faster than in any other demographic, despite doctors' grim warnings about the increased risk of anything from infertility, miscarriage, maternal diabetes and caesarean sections to stillbirth and Downs Syndrome. It all sounds distinctly alarming. So why are we leaving motherhood so late?
The stereotyped first-time mother in her 40s is a well-heeled singleton who has put breeding "on hold" in order to achieve world domination on the career front. This turns out to be spurious. Lindsey Harris, creator of the website www.mothers35plus.co.uk), says: "In my experience, postponing motherhood has nothing to do with careers and everything to do with waiting for Mr Right." A website survey of more than 2,000 women found that a "lack of a suitable partner earlier on" was the main reason women waited until the 11th hour to have a baby.

Big Oil Federal Subsidies are Robbing the American Taxpayers
Big Oil is once again being called on the carpet. Senior executives of the five largest U.S. oil companies were to appear before a congressional committee Tuesday where they were likely to find frustrated lawmakers in no mood for small talk.
"These companies are defending billions of federal subsidies ... while reaping over a hundred billion dollars in profits in just the last year alone," complained Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., in previewing the hearing.
The lawmakers were scheduled to hear from top executives of Exxon Mobil Corp., Shell Oil Co., BP America Inc., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips, which together earned about $123 billion last year because of soaring oil and gasoline prices.

Mobile phones 'more dangerous than smoking'
Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.
The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.
It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.

Food stamps are the symbol of poverty in the US. In the era of the credit crunch, a record 28 million Americans are now relying on them to survive – a sure sign the world's richest country faces economic crisis.
The US Department of Agriculture says the cost of feeding a low-income family of four has risen 6 per cent in 12 months. "The amount of food stamps per household hasn't gone up with the food costs," says Dayna Ballantyne, who runs a food bank in Des Moines, Iowa. "Our clients are finding they aren't able to purchase food like they used to."

Iran Assists Moves to End Violence in Iraq
Iraqi lawmakers traveled to the Iranian holy city of Qom over the weekend to win the support of the commander of Iran's Qods brigades in persuading Shiite cleric Muqtada al Sadr to order his followers to stop military operations, members of the Iraqi parliament said.
Ali al Adeeb, a member of Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki's Dawa party, and Hadi al Ameri, the head of the Badr Organization, the military wing of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, had two aims, lawmakers said: to ask Sadr to stand down his militia and to ask Iranian officials to stop supplying weapons to Shiite militants in Iraq.

Black Teachers' College Professor Accused of Noose Excuse
A Manhattan grand jury has subpoenaed the university records of the controversial black Columbia Teachers College professor who found a noose hanging from her office door - signaling that the investigation is broadening to examine possible links between the teacher, her closest friends and the racially charged incident, The Post has learned.
The incident happened at the height of the school's probe of plagiarism charges against her.
[ These noose incidents always seem to be hoaxes or misunderstandings. There is profit to be made from claiming racial victimization. ]
