Ex-Agriprocessors Workers Detail Abuse in Wake of Raid
As the country's largest kosher slaughterhouse scrambles to stay open after a federal raid, former workers at the plant -- many still fearful of retribution from government authorities -- have begun to tell their stories, revealing new details of conditions there.
Agents in the May 12 raid at the Agriprocessors plant in this small northeastern Iowa town arrested 389 illegal workers, among them 18 juveniles.
In recent days, former employees have been painting a picture of a company indifferent to federal laws prohibiting slaughterhouses from employing workers younger than 18, and where workers frequently were pressured to exchange sexual favors for preferred treatment.
At least one lawmaker, U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), reportedly has said that he supports an investigation into conditions at the plant.

German Retail Chain Slammed for 'Racist' portrayal of an Italian in ad
German electronics giant Media Markt may have thought its TV ad featuring a stereotype of an Italian was funny. But after Italian newspapers decried that ad as racist, it was pulled. It's not the first time the company has got into hot water for its depiction of its European neighbors.
Toni wears oversized sunglasses pushed back into his wavy hair, a gold chain around his neck, three-day-old scruff and a moustache. He is macho, greasy and sexist -- the Italian stereotype. That doesn't play so well in bella Italia. The Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera and La Republica called the ads, four of them in total, racist and riddled with cliches.
Italians living in Germany have also complained about the campaign. Particular anger was directed against the spot where Toni explains the difference between people on either side of the Alps: "The Germans buy laptops; the Italians buy referees," a too-close-for-comfort jab at the bribery scandal that rocked Italian football in 2006. Although Toni's next line is "just a little joke," Italy has failed to find much humor in the ad.

The 'Diversity' Threat to California Charity
A bill purporting to encourage diversity among nonprofits has passed the California Assembly and faces a key vote in the state senate in early June. While little attention has been paid to this bill, it poses an enormous threat to private philanthropy in this country.
The Foundation Diversity and Transparency Act requires California foundations with $250 million in assets to report the composition by ethnicity and gender orientation of their boards and staffs, the boards and staffs of the charities they support, and the degree to which they are run by or support certain minorities.
The "diversity" bill, if enacted into law, would be just the beginning. Already contemplated is legislation to cover all foundations, and all grant recipients, not just in California, but nationally; and to broaden reporting requirements to include the aged or the disabled. Ultimately, this all leads in one direction: to politically determine how private charities manage and deploy their resources.
The state senate should understand what a disincentive - and an injustice - it would be for the government to micromanage private charity to favor a preferred political agenda, thereby turning private funds into public funds by diktat.
[ Effectively it makes giving to charity into a kind of voluntary taxation, where the government still has some control over where it is spent. ]

Level of immigrant integration in Ireland highlighted
Just 12 per cent of Chinese immigrants, and 22 per cent of Lithuanians, are 'highly integrated' into Irish society, according to a major study by researchers at UCD.
The report, Getting On, assessed the experience of four migrant groupsâ€"Nigerians, Chinese, Indians and Lithuaniansâ€"across a selection of political, economic and social indicators.
It found that more than 90 per cent of Indian respondents and over 70 per cent of Nigerians indicated medium to high levels of integration. However, half of Chinese respondents showed low or very low integration levels, while almost 40 per cent of Lithuanians were placed in the same category.

Blacks are fastest growing demograph amongst home schooled children
According to the National Urban League, black male achievement begins to decline as early as fourth grade. Blacks continue to fall behind through high school, in test scores, grades and dropout rates. Fewer than half of black males graduate in four years.
The Barcos join an increasing number of black families in the Triangle and across the country who choose to home-school their children. Of the estimated 1.1 million home-schooled children in the U.S., about 10 percent are black, according to the most recent federal statistics from the U.S. Department of Education.
Blacks are the fastest-growing demographic among home-schoolers, said Jennifer James, a Boone mother of two who in 2003 founded the National African-American Homeschoolers Alliance, a nonreligious group that provides online information and support to about 3,000 home-schoolers.
Disappointed with the public school system, many black parents opt to home-school because they want more rigorous academics and a truly multicultural education, James said.

Japanese are Loath to Rebuild Workforce through Immigration
Inside the government, there is growing agreement that Japan can head off disastrous population decline by significantly increasing immigration.
Japan has the world's highest proportion of people older than 65 and the world's smallest proportion of children younger than 15. Without immigration in substantial numbers, it will soon run perilously low on people of working age.
Yet among highly developed countries, Japan has always ranked near the bottom in the percentage of foreign-born residents. In the United States, about 12 percent are foreign-born; in Japan, just 1.6 percent. Most immigrants here are from Asia or South America. The largest number come from Korea (about 600,000 people), followed by China and Brazil. The Brazilians are mostly of mixed Japanese descent.
Yet there is little or no political will here to persuade or prepare the public to accept a sizable influx of foreigners.
[ Because economic growth is so sacred, population growth is also required, this will only come from the nations that produce the most children. Some populations are being actively replaced, while the world'd population continues to grow. ]

Tens of thousands more Arctic species may soon be listed as "endangered"
As a result, the IUCN is working on a second way of assessing the future threat to species because of climate change. "We are working with life history traits - if a species has very specific requirements, how will those be affected by climate change?" says Foden.
She and her colleagues have identified 84 traits - such as migration timing and a requirement for certain temperatures - that could make a species vulnerable. They are now engaged in a mammoth project to assess all birds, amphibians and warm water corals - 16,800 species in total - for these traits. They will present their preliminary findings in October at the World Conservation Congress.
Once the species are listed, there remains the difficult issue of what can be done to protect them. Responding to the threat of climate change is quite different to responding to illegal poaching, they say.
"We can eliminate all other threats that might be operating on the species, such as hunting and habitat destruction," says Foden. "This will give the species the best chance of surviving climate change. Listing species on global and federal threatened species lists will help in this regard."

Indonesia and Malaysia lied about extent of forests cleared for palm oil
INDONESIA and Malaysia have long denied that their tropical forests are being burned to make way for lucrative palm oil plantations. It seems they've been lying through their teeth.
Between 1990 and 2005 palm plantations rocketed by 1.87 million hectares in Malaysia and by more than 3 million hectares in Indonesia. With the help of data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, Lian Pin Koh at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and David Wilcove of Princeton University found that more than half the palm plantations came at the expense of forests - largely pristine, intact forest in Indonesia and previously logged forest in Malaysia. The rest of the expansion covered pre-existing cropland.
The European Commission is drafting a law to ban imports of palm oil crops grown on intact tropical forests. But logged forests support nearly as much biodiversity as primary forests, say the researchers, and should also be protected.
[ They'd better hurry up with that law and be sure to enforce it strongly as well. Also it would be reasonable to tell Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil that if they don't cease the destruction of forestry, war will be declared. ]

Bahrain: Islamic MP calls for expulsion of Bangladeshis
Manama, 26 May (AKI) - An Islamic parliamentarian in Bahrain has called for the expulsion of Bangladeshi immigrant workers after one of them was accused of a gruesome killing.
"We need to expel all the Bangladeshi workers that are in our country," said Abdel Halim Murad of the hardline Salafi bloc according to a report in the local newspaper Akhbar al-Khalji.
"We cannot tolerate the way in which these people continue to repeat crimes," he said.
There are about 200,000 foreign workers in Kuwait and their presence in the country is often a source of protest from the rest of the local population.

Indian government wants to encourage inter-caste marriages
The central government has asked all states to encourage inter-caste marriages to combat caste based discrimination, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar said here.
"In a letter to all the chief ministers, I have requested that they increase the incentive amount for inter-caste marriages to at least Rs.50,000, of which 50 percent would be borne by the centre," Meira Kumar told journalists here Friday.

Neo-Nazis divided, disorganized, dysfunctional
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization that monitors and pursues legal action against hate groups, says that while groups like the NSM have shot up in membership, these groups are divided and disorganized. Some previously large white supremacist groups like the Aryan Nations are now a shadow of their former selves. Power struggles within the National Socialist Movement, including the defection of several high-profile members, have depleted its ranks. Some former members went on to form their own groups, or join rival organizations. Others turned out to be FBI informants.
[ What is the cause of our dysfunction? It's our liberal within, and here are its symptoms:
1. Individualism. People become nationalists to make themselves seem cooler, e.g., for the same reason people become liberals. The disease of social self-judgment has reached us as well.
2. No one other than a handful of people understand the ideology because most neo-Nazis insist on distilling it to complaining and hatred in order to attract more members.
3. Incompetence. NS people are so used to being demonized that they accept anyone who swears by their beliefs, no matter how insane (or obviously an informant) this person is.
4. Loudmouths. When you make ideology a rush to the bottom, the loudmouths get all the attention, and thoughtful/powerful people go elsewhere. Smart people get shouted down by impoverished, diseased, angry and impotent failures because the failures "express more fully" their distillation of NS ideology.

Homosexuals have "24 hours to leave" Gambia
Gay rights activists have condemned Gambian President Yahya Jammeh's threat to behead homosexuals.
Last week he told a political rally that gay people had 24 hours to leave the country.
He promised "stricter laws than Iran" on homosexuality and said he would "cut off the head" of any gay person found in The Gambia.

Islamist 'Washington ruin' image turns out to be from Fallout 3 game
This image of Washington after a nuclear holocaust, which a US intelligence group claimed showed the ambition of Islamic extremist terrorists, was actually lifted from a computer game.
The SITE Intelligence Group said that the image, showing a ruined Capitol Building in Washington, was created by extremists as part of discussions about the feasibility of nuclear strikes against the US and Britain.
The images appeared in a video, called Nuclear Jihad: The Ultimate Terror, posted on two password-protected websites, al-Ekhlass and al-Hesbah, believed to be affiliated with al-Qa'eda.
SITE also released translated several chatroom threads from al-Ekhlass and al-Hesbah, discussing the possibility of nuclear attacks on the West.

For weeks, the three wives of Mansa Musa Muhummed and most of their 19 children have been telling a jury countless stories of torture and starvation that they kept to themselves for years.

Protests Erupt Over German Medical Group's Award to Ex-Nazi
A spokesman for Germany's Central Council of Jews called the decision by the Professional Association of German Internists to honor Nazi doctor Hans-Joachim Sewering "a scandal."
On Saturday, May 24, Sewering was honored with the top award of the German internists group, known as the BDI.
The award was presented for having "perfomed unequalled services in the cause of freedom of the practice and the independence of the medical profession, and to the nation's health system," according to a BDI press statement.
But Stephen Kramer from the Central Council of Jews said Sewering's Nazi past was well known. In 1993 he was publicly pressured to decline the presidency of the World Medical Association because of his alleged Nazi activities.

Authentic Viking DNA Retrieved From 1,000-year-old Skeletons
Analysis of DNA from the remains of ancient humans provides valuable insights into such important questions as the origin of genetic diseases, migration patterns of our forefathers and tribal and family patterns.
Using freshly sampled material from ten Viking skeletons from around AD 1,000, from a non-Christian burial site on the Danish island of Funen, Dissing and colleagues showed that it is indeed possible to retrieve authentic DNA from ancient humans.
Wearing protective suits, the researchers removed the teeth from the jaw at the moment the skeletons were unearthed when they had been untouched for 1,000 years. The subsequent laboratory procedures were also carefully controlled in order to avoid contamination.
Analysis of the Viking DNA showed no evidence of contamination with extraneous DNA, and typing of the endogenous DNA gave reproducible results and showed that these individuals were just as diverse as contemporary humans. A reliable retrieval of authentic DNA opens the way for a valuable use of prehistoric human remains to illuminate the genetic history of past and extant populations.

Altruism In Social Insects Is A Family Affair
The contentious debate about why insects evolved to put the interests of the colony over the individual has been reignited by new research from the University of Leeds, showing that they do so to increase the chances that their genes will be passed on.
A team led by Dr Bill Hughes of the University's Faculty of Biological Sciences studied 'kin selection' - the theory that an animal may pass on its genes by helping relatives to reproduce, because they share common genes, rather than by reproducing itself.
The concept of 'kin selection' was developed in 1964 by the evolutionary biologist Bill Hamilton, first proposed by Charles Darwin to explain, for example, why sterile workers evolved in social insect groups and why a honeybee would sacrifice its life to defend the colony. Charles Darwin recognized that such altruistic behaviour in highly social insect groups was at odds with his theory of natural selection, and Bill Hamilton's theory of kin selection showed that this behaviour can evolve because it still fulfills the drive to pass on genes - but through relatives instead.

Texas town's immigrant-renting rule is struck down
A Dallas suburb's ban on apartment rentals to illegal immigrants, an ordinance passed by city leaders and later endorsed in a vote by its residents, is unconstitutional, a federal judge found Wednesday.
Only the federal government can regulate immigration, U.S. District Judge Sam A. Lindsay concluded in his decision.
The city didn't defer to the federal government on the matter, violating the supremacy clause of the U.S. Constitution, which allows for the federal government to pre-empt local laws, Lindsay said.

In Miami, Spanish is becoming the primary language
The 49-year-old flower shop owner and Miami native said her inability to speak "espanol" makes it difficult to conduct business, seek help at stores and even ask directions. She finds it "frustrating."
In many areas of Miami, Spanish has become the predominant language, replacing English in everyday life. Anyone from Latin America could feel at home on the streets, without having to pronounce a single word in English.
"The Anglo population is leaving," said Juan Clark, a sociology professor at Miami Dade College. "One of the reactions is to emigrate toward the north. They resent the fact that (an American) has to learn Spanish in order to have advantages to work. If one doesn't speak Spanish, it's a disadvantage."
According to the Census, 58.5 percent of the county's 2.4 million residents speak Spanish - and half of those say they don't speak English well. English-only speakers make up 27.2 percent of the county's residents.

Ethiopian to replace German news presenter Eva Hermann who was sacked for non PC speech
An Ethiopian-born migrant has replaced popular news presenter Eva Hermann on the German television network NDR, following her firing over Politically Incorrect remarks she made last September.
The new host is Yared Dibaba, who hails from the Oromo tribe of the impoverished African country's southwest corner.
Dibaba, 38, came to Germany with his family in 1979, where he grew up and attended school. He went on to pursue an acting career before being "discovered" by the latter-day
German media. He is not expected to be Politically Incorrect like his predecessor.
Hermann had praised the family model promoted by the National Socialists and compared it with its collapse following the Second World War.

UK Families struggling as bills begin to bite
The numbers and the precise circumstances may vary, but in recent months the Walls' experience has found echoes in family budgets up and down Britain. The global commodity price hikes that have led to riots and civil disorder from Haiti to west Africa to the Philippines may have been greeted, in this country, with British stoicism, but for many, food price rises - a pound here, ÂŁ10 there - are starting to hurt.
Bread costs 20% more than it did a year ago, according to a survey earlier this month by the price comparison site mysupermarket.com, and rice 60% more. Pasta has gone up by 81% in some shops, and in Tesco it was found to be 113% more expensive. Butter costs 60% more than it did, meat prices too are up. The site puts the annual rise at 19.1%. Though industry observers point out that this figure includes prices from the more expensive Waitrose but not the promotion-focused Morrisons or any budget supermarket chains such as Lidl, it represents the sharpest rise in food prices since records began.
"The odd thing is that a lot of people seem to have only just noticed," says Alex Beckett, a food specialist at the industry magazine The Grocer. "In fact, food prices have been going up for quite some time, but they have dramatically soared in the last 18 months."

An indoctrination program that was shut down at the University of Delaware last year after it was revealed the teachings included, "All whites are racist," now is being revived, and an organization monitoring such educational behavior is concerned there will be violations similar to those of a year ago.
Adam Kissell, a spokesman for The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, told WND his worry is that this year's "program" for incoming students at Delaware has the same "learning outcomes" as a year ago, the same administrators are running it, and components appear simply to have been renamed, instead of changed.
WND reported a year ago when a series of teachings mandated for all residence halls told students "all whites are racists."

Oprah Winfrey's decision to openly back Barack Obama early in his nomination campaign has cost her dearly with the key demographic whose members made her so
famous: middle aged white women. According to ratings data cited by "Fox and Friends" hostess Gretchen Carlson, the Oprah show is "down seven percent [overall], but down, I believe, twenty-five percent in the key demographic of those young viewers." Steve

Church of Christ in Chicago: "Isn't true if you're in the business of words, as she is, if she takes this stand, she's gonna alienate half the country when she opens her mouth?" Oprah's support for Obama came complete with messianic pangyrics delivered in the kind of threatening ghetto Ebonics slang that makes her white church lady viewers "uncomfortable."
Winfrey, who was clearly an affirmative action beneficiary of the corporate media's desire to put "black faces in high places," has been so successful not because she is a "strong black woman" but because many whites are desperate to find and support non-threatening, "nice" nonwhites who seem to reinforce the media stereotype of multiculturalism as actually workable. Supporting such "Uncle Toms" also allows these whites to relieve a measure of misplaced "white guilt."

European Parliament Bans Opposition
The European Union, the "free trade organization with a few added extras," is officially turning into a pan-European dictatorship. The Daily Telegraph reports:
The European Union assembly's political establishment is pushing through changes that will silence dissidents by changing the rules allowing Euro-MPs to form political groupings. Richard Corbett, a British Labour MEP, is leading the charge to cut the number of party political tendencies in the Parliament next year, a move that would dissolve UKIP's pan-European Eurosceptic "Independence and Democracy" grouping. Under the rule change, the largest and most pro-EU groups would tighten their grip on the Parliament's political agenda and keep control of lavish funding.
Racism includes "Islamophobia," according to numerous EU documents. Which means that "Islamophobia" will soon be treated as a crime as serious as rape and armed robbery across most of the European continent. At the same time, European leaders are busy enlarging the EU to include North Africa and the Middle East, thus flooding Europe with tens of millions of additional Muslims. Not far into the future, EU authorities can arrest a person in, say, Denmark or Italy, who has published a cartoon that could be considered offensive to Islam. He or she will then be quietly handed over to the authorities in Algeria, Egypt or Jordan. Remember that blasphemy against Islam potentially carries the death penalty according to sharia. Multiculturalism in Europe is thus reaching its openly totalitarian phase. Those who think this is a joke can look at the Dutch cartoonist who was arrested recently.

Indian couple abandons IVF 'wrong sex' babies
The mum aged 59 and dad, 72, conceived in India with fertility treatment and returned to England for the birth.
They told horrified medics they did not want the "wrong sex" babies immediately after the Caesarean section in Wolverhampton.
The husband then asked how soon it would be before his wife was fit enough to fly out again for further IVF in the hope of getting a boy to continue the family name.
An NHS insider told The Sun: "Everyone is utterly appalled. How could any parent do this?"

Migrant workers 'find it easy to get British work permit despite controls'
Migrant workers find Britain is still one of the easiest countries in which to obtain a work permit, despite the introduction of a new system designed to tighten UK border controls, new research has found.
Britain came 16th out of 20 global economies ranked in descending order, with one being the strictest, in a survey by Sarah Buttler Associates (SBA), the business immigration experts.
The US was deemed to have the strictest immigration policy and only three countries - Japan, Australia and Thailand - were considered to be less strict than the UK.

The most stunning revelation in a 370-page Justice US Department Inspector General's report released this week was that agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had formally opened a "War Crimes" file, documenting torture they had witnessed at the Guantanamo Bay US prison camp, before being ordered by the administration to stop writing their reports.
The World Socialist Web Site, together with human rights groups and other opponents of US militarism and repression, has long insisted that the actions of the Bush administration the launching of wars of aggression, assassinations, the abduction and detention of civilians without trial and, most repugnant of all, torture, constitute war crimes under any legitimate interpretation of longstanding international statutes and treaties.
To have this assessment confirmed, however, by the IG of the Justice Department, the only senior official there not answerable directly to the White House, and by agents of the FBI, an agency not known for its sensitivity to questions of democratic rights, is an indication of the rampant character of these crimes as well as the crisis they have engendered within the US government and America’s ruling elite as a whole.
The report makes it absolutely clear that torture was ordered and planned in detail at the highest levels of the government, including the White House, the National Security Council, the Pentagon and the Justice Department. Attempts to stop it on legal or pragmatic grounds by individuals within the government were systematically suppressed, and evidence of this criminal activity covered up.
[ This torture is not in the public interest - because the government is not run for the national interest. Any legitimate torture should not be covered up like a dirty secret. Anyone who would try to replace the government with one that is genuinely in America's interest could expect war crimes and torture to be committed upon them. ]

Germany Pledges Funds for Protection of Tropical Forests
Stopping global warming means putting a halt to deforestation. At the UN biodiversity conference in Bonn on Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged billions of euros to support that effort.
[ Apparantly simply buying the Amazon costs $50 billion - according to the Swedish tycoon who has already bought some - so this looks like paying the owners of the forest not to cut it down. If that's the case there is some astonishing corruption going on. ]

Obama mistaken on name of Nazi death camp
The Barack Obama campaign said Tuesday the candidate mistakenly referred to the wrong Nazi death camp when relating the story of a great-uncle who helped liberate the camps in World War II.
The Democratic presidential candidate said the story is accurate except that the camp was Buchenwald, not Auschwitz.
"Senator Obama's family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II especially the fact that his great-uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement. "Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically."
[ Obama has to get his camps straight if he wants to win the trust of the Jews. Why is this story just coming out now, when he could have capitalized on that much longer ago, I wonder. ]

Californian prisons prepare to integrate cellmates
"We segregate amongst ourselves because I'd rather hang out with white people, and blacks would rather hang out with people of their own race," said Good, 33, of Walnut Creek. "Look at suburbia. Look at Oakland. Look at Beverly Hills. People in society self-segregate."
San Quentin and 30 or so other state penal facilities are gearing up to carry out a federal court mediation agreement for integrating double cells and ending the use of race as the sole determining factor in making cell assignments.
Men in California's prisons have long been segregated in cells to quell racial tensions.
But Good, along with California's other 155,700 male inmates, may soon be forced to live in a 4-by-9-foot cell with an inmate of a different race.

Poor eating more food than they can produce for their large families
The farmer is on his weekly trip to the market, where he has to buy more food than he sells because his ability to produce children has far outpaced the capacity of his land to feed them.
Thirteen years ago, when Tayaban started tilling the paddies, he had two fields and two mouths to feed. Today he has no more land, but six children. The producer has had to become a consumer. That was not a problem when grain was cheap. But in the past year, global prices have tripled.
Tayaban has little inkling of the reasons why. There is no television reception at his home, so he hasn't heard about UN warnings of a food crisis or seen the reports about tortilla rallies in Mexico, pasta protests in Italy and onion demonstrations in India.
The same problem of demand exceeding supply applies to the country. The Philippines is the world's biggest importer of rice. It expects to ship in 2.7m tonnes this year, almost 10% of the total needed to feed a population of 91 million that is growing annually by more than 2%, one of the fastest rates in the world. Large tenders by the Philippines on the international market helped drive up rice prices by 76% between December 2007 and April 2008, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Peacekeepers Sexually Abusing Children
A 13-year-old girl said that she was raped by about 10 UN violent peacekeepers in a field in the surroundings of her home in Ivory Coast. After the rape they left the victim lying bleeding on the ground. The soldiers were not sentenced.
In the report it is written that the peacemakers and the members of charity organisations sexually abuse little boys and girls.
After an inquiry was carried out in Ivory Coast, Sudan and Haiti, the members of a British humanitarian organisation stated that hundreds of children are victims of these crimes and that it is necessary to protect them.
- It's a minority of people but they are using their power to sexually exploit children and children that don't have the voice to report about this â€" said Heather Kerr, director of the organisation "Save the Children" from Ivory Coast.

China's one-child policy has exemptions for quake victims' parents
In response to inquiries from grieving relatives, local officials announced Monday that parents whose only child was killed or grievously injured in the May 12 earthquake would be exempt from the country's one-child policy.
The exception, issued by the Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in Sichuan Province, said qualified parents could apply for legal permission to have another child, according to The Associated Press.
Thousands of parents have openly challenged the government over why so many schools collapsed during the earthquake. An estimated 10,000 students are believed to have died.
The anguish of parents and grandparents has been compounded by the one-child policy, which was introduced in 1979 to control population growth. Provincial officials, especially those in rural areas or in regions with large minority populations, are sometimes given latitude in the application of the regulations. In some places, for example, families are permitted to have more than one child if the first is a girl.
[ And girls are the ones who grow up to give birth so this would be an ineffective policy for population reduction. Any Chinese abroad can reproduce to the max. The policy is therefore encouraging colonialism. ]

Brazilians angered by Swedish tycoon's Amazon price tag
Johan Eliasch, the 46-year-old boss of the Head sports equipment company, is under investigation by Brazilian police and intelligence services for the alleged comments and for 160,000 hectares (395,000 acres) of Amazon forest he is believed to have bought, the newspaper O Globo reported on Monday.
He reportedly made the assertions to stimulate land acquisition as part of his role as director of Cool Earth, an organization he co-founded which finds sponsors for the rainforest as a way of protecting it.
"Eliasch held meetings with businessmen between 2006 and 2007 in which he proposed that they buy land in the Amazon, and told them 'only' $50 billion would be needed to acquire all the forest," according to a report by Brazil's Abin intelligence agency cited by O Globo.
The issue is a sensitive one for Brazil, which has been offended by statements by British politicians suggesting that the Amazon is too important to all of mankind to be left to the management of Brazil's government alone.

Race-Related Newspaper Magazine to Launch
RiseUp, a weekly magazine with race-related content, is set to launch June 22 in major newspapers, carrying a four million circulation.
"The mission of RiseUp is to provide an ongoing conversation for all races and ethnicities to better understand each other and to build stronger communities, cities, nations and a better world," founder and executive editor Janice Ellis tells FOLIO:.
RiseUp, which will be driven by national advertising, has secured several newspapers including the New York Daily News, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and the Houston Chronicle to distribute the magazine. Ellis says she plans to look for additional partnerships and to increase RiseUp's circulation to eight million this fall. By the first quarter 2009, circulation could be as high as 12 million, she says.
[ This is another attempt to further push pluralism rather than attempt to make the world a better place by encouraging the preservation of culture and ethnicity. The Jewish founder and executive should concentrate on her own people instead. ]

Mexico's war against drugs is killing its police
Opposition politicians and even some police officials have begun to question whether the president's ambition has exceeded his grasp, with dangerous and destabilizing consequences for a country that shares a 3,200-kilometer, or 2,000-mile, border with the United States. Bush administration officials have said Calderon's efforts might founder unless the U.S. Congress approves a $1.4 billion package of equipment and training over three years for the Mexican police.
Top security officials who were once thought untouchable have been gunned down in Mexico City, four in the last month alone. Drug dealers killed another seven federal agents this year in retaliation for drug busts in border towns. Others have died in shootouts.
Drug traffickers have killed at least 170 local police officers, among them at least a score of municipal police commanders, since Calderon took office. Some were believed to have been corrupt officers who had sold out to drug gangs and were killed by rival gangsters, investigators say. Others were killed for doing their jobs.

What Is The Value Of Biodiversity To Our Collective Future?
What will the loss of biodiversity cost us in the long term? How much do national economies need to invest now in order to stop the trend? And what price will we have to pay if we do not act? These are the questions the TEEB - The Economics of Eco-systems and Biodiversity - project is seeking to answer.
The pilot study led by Pavan Sukhdev, who is head of Deutsche Bank's Global Market Centre in London, was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and the European Union. The BMU asked the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) to co-manage the scientific contributions to the study. Preliminary results will be presented during the 9th UN Conference on Biological Diversity (COP9) in Bonn, Germany on 29 May.
"The Stern Review changed the way we look at the economic consequences of climate change. It is our hope that the TEEB Report will do the same for biodiversity. It is becoming clear that stopping the extinction of species is not merely a romantic notion, but is actually crucial for human survival."

Israel 'has 150 nuclear weapons' says ex president Carter
He also described Israeli treatment of Palestinians as "one of the greatest human rights crimes on earth".
Most experts estimate that Israel has between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads, largely based on information leaked to the Sunday Times newspaper in the 1980s by Mordechai Vanunu, a former worker at the country's Dimona nuclear reactor.
The US, a key ally of Israel, has in general followed the country's policy of "nuclear ambiguity", neither confirming or denying the existence of its assumed arsenal.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert included Israel among a list of nuclear states in comments in December 2006, a week after US Defence Secretary Robert Gates used a similar form of words during a Senate hearing.

No More Pyrotechnics - rock concerts going slightly greener
Some bands and concert organisers have taken strides to minimise touring's environmental impact. Festivals such as Lollapalooza, an American summer institution, and Britain's massive Glastonbury Festival have switched to biofuel-powered generators. The organisers of last summer's Oshega Festival in Montreal went one step further: they hired Hydro Quebec to supply their main stage with emission-free geothermal energy. Reverb has encouraged organisers to offer reusable aluminum canteens rather than plastic water-bottles, and also set up "Eco-Villages", with information on how to minimise one's carbon footprints, outside concert venues.
This is all very well, but bands still seem more committed to talk than action. The Dave Matthews Band, peripatetic college favourites, made much of its decision in 2006 to use biofuels and emissions reduction credits (ERCs) to make its annual summer tours "carbon neutral". But it still schedules concerts at places like the George Amphitheater, 150 miles east of Seattle and hundreds of miles from any public transport. That produces immense quantities of CO2, half of which will still be there in 100 years.

A desperate new generation driven to drink
Britons drink so much that we now have children admitted to hospital with liver disease. According to a survey by the Office for National Statistics, more 13-year-olds have drunk alcohol than not that's 350,000 13-year-old drinkers in England and Wales alone; I don't expect the figures for Scotland especially buck the trend.
The week before last a 25% rise in crime over three years by girls aged between 10 and 17 was blamed on ladette culture and underage drinking (I don't know why they bother to differentiate: ladette culture is underage drinking).
"The relentless rise in [hospital] admissions involving more and more young people is very bad news," said Professor Roger Williams, a liver specialist at University College London, who added that he and his colleagues were treating people in their twenties and thirties for liver failure and cirrhosis.
The proposed solution shops and supermarkets facing legal curbs on the sale of cut-price alcohol has its heart in the right place, but I don't see how it would really address what has become a problem of epidemic proportions. If people whose definition of enjoyment is drinking can no longer buy cheap booze, they start concocting their own and end up drinking meths or whatever its modern equivalents might be.

An Asian is murdered: media and police suggest race attack - but it turns out otherwise
An Asian teenager battered to death in a town centre park may have been the victim of a racist gang, it emerged today.
Police are investigating whether there is a link between the boy's death and reports of running battles between two gangs of youths in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, throughout yesterday afternoon.
A source close to the victim's family said that the Bank Holiday had been marred by violence between the warring gangs.
The man, who lives in Dewsbury and did not wish to be named, said: "Stuff went on in the park between different gangs of youths during the day. There was fighting between a white gang and a non white gang."
[ If a white is killed, eg the Harry Potter actor, they won't so much as mention the race of the attackers. It has now emerged that Asians have been arrested in connection with the above attack. But the media managed to get some anti-white propaganda out first. ]

Anti-tech ants!
Electrical systems in Houston have been failing after a huge influx of ants, according to reports from Associated Press.
The ants are resistant to over-the-counter poisons and have ruined pumping equipment at sewage stations, damaged computers and caused fire alarms to malfunction.
Like many insects, the ants are attracted by electronic devices.
Ants can be a major problem around electrical items as they eat through cable insulation on power lines and congregate on metal conductors, causing shorts in electrical lines, junction boxes, traffic and street lights and air conditioners.

Organised crime 'behind illegal fishing'
ORGANISED crime groups around the world and even motorcycle gangs are becoming involved in illegal fishing, lured mainly by demand from China for prized fish species, a study by Australian crime experts said.
The groups from China, Australia, Russia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan have all been linked to illegal fishing, with fish stocks either sold illegally or used to launder money, the Australian Institute of Criminology said.

Paris during Nazi occupation was 'one big romp'
A new book which suggests that the German occupation of France encouraged the sexual liberation of women has shocked a country still struggling to come to terms with its troubled history of collaboration with the Nazis.
"It is a taboo subject, a story nobody wants to hear," said Patrick Buisson, author of 1940-1945 Annees Erotiques ("erotic years"). "It may hurt our national pride, but the reality is that people adapted to occupation."
Many might prefer to forget but, with their husbands in prison camps, numerous women slept not only with German soldiers the young "blond barbarians" were particularly attractive to French women, says Buisson but also conducted affairs with anyone else who could help them through financially difficult times: "They gave way to the advances of the boss, to the tradesman they owed money to, their neighbour. Harry Potter actor stabbed to death by negroes
Then two black men in an Audi A3 turned up outside. The bouncers didn't seem to search them.
"It kicked off straight away. One went up to Jamie and said, 'I'm going to get you. I'm going to slit your throat.'
This man threw a chair at Jamie and a big fight erupted.
"We were all trying to get the knife off him. It all spilled outside the bar. He had one in each hand and was just lashing out. It was terrible."
Robert, thought to have three stab wounds to the chest, was declared dead soon after arriving at hospital.

Indiana Jones movie upsets communists
Members of Russia's Communist Party are calling for a nationwide boycott of the new Indiana Jones movie, saying it aims to undermine communist ideology and distort history.
"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" stars Harrison Ford as an archaeologist in 1957 competing with an evil KGB agent, played by Cate Blanchett, to find a skull endowed with mystic powers.
It hit Russian screens Thursday.
Communist Party members in St. Petersburg said on a web site this week that the Soviet Union in 1957 "did not send terrorists to the States," but launched a satellite, "which evoked the admiration of the whole world."
Moscow Communist lawmaker Andrei Andreyev said Saturday "it is very disturbing if talented directors want to provoke a new Cold War."

No kidding! Climate change spreads to Jupiter, Mars
According to Philip S. Marcus, a professor of fluid dynamics at UC Berkeley, analysis of the Hubble and Keck images may support his 2004 conjecture that Jupiter is in the midst of global climate change that will alter temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Celsius, getting warmer near the equator and cooler near the south pole.
Mars, too, is being hit by rapid climate change and it is happening so fast that the red planet could lose its southern ice cap, according to scientists.
Scientists from NASA say that Mars has warmed by about 0.5C since the 1970s. This is similar to the warming experienced on Earth over approximately the same period.
Since there is no known life on Mars it suggests rapid changes in planetary climates could be natural phenomena.
[ This should not be seen as an excuse to continue to pollute the planet. Greenhouse gasses still cause climate change and there are still many other problems from ozone depletion, to ocean acidification, and species extinction that are immediate threats. ]

Increased U.S. airstrikes in Iraq killing more civilians
A surge in US airstrikes within densely populated areas of Iraq has led to a dramatic rise in civilian casualties.
According to the Washington Post, ever since an attempted crackdown on Shi'ite militias by the Iraqi government in March, which led to increased attacks on the Green Zone in Baghdad that killed some Americans, the US military has been firing missiles almost every day into the crowded Shi'ite slum of Sadr City.
Residents describe the attacks as indiscriminate and say they have led to many civilian deaths. However, the US Army states that they choose their targets carefully and often refrain from firing for fear of civilian casualties.

US political author Norman Finkelstein denied entry to Israel
Jerusalem - The US political author and critic of Israel Norman Finkelstein was denied entry to the Jewish state on Friday, his lawyer said.
Finkelstein landed at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv in the early morning and was told by a representative of the ministry of interior that he would not be allowed into the country on 'security' grounds, attorney Michael Sfard told dpa.
'This usually means a 10-year ban on entry,' Sfard added.
Finkelstein, who is Jewish and the son of Holocaust survivors, has written critical books on Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories and on what he called 'exploitation' of the Jewish tragedy during World War II.
Finkelstein has received with the fierce disapproval of some authors and academics, while others have praised his controversial works.

Italians bulldoze mosque, create Oriana Fallaci Square in its place
This decision was taken by the committee of Oppeano (Verona, Italy), where yesterday morning a building used by Muslims for prayer was bulldozed. In its place, the Municipality will create a public square named after the writer of The Rage and the Pride, which promoted a bitter campaign against Islam.
The decision to raze the structure which had been opened by ONLUS [translator’s note: Organizzazione Non Lucrativa di Utilita’ Sociale, a non-profit registered Italian charity] "For the success of Muslims", was taken by the municipal administration, which acquired the area for €70,000 in order to transform it into an open area for parking and green space.
"My citizens did not want this takeover," explained the mayor, Alessandro Montagnoli, deputy of the Lega Nord, "above all because it could create problems of practicability and cohabitation with the residents."

Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare
Breault cut her driving time in half. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. She began relying on a wood-burning stove.
"I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. "Devastated. Depressed. Afraid. Vulnerable. Weak. Alone. Just terrible."
These energy survivalists are not leading some sort of green revolution meant to save the planet. Many of them believe it is too late for that, seeing signs in soaring fuel and food prices and a faltering U.S. economy, and are largely focused on saving themselves.
Some are doing it quietly, giving few details of their preparations â€" afraid that revealing such information as the location of their supplies will endanger themselves and their loved ones. They envision a future in which the nation's cities will be filled with hungry, desperate refugees forced to go looking for food, shelter and water.
[ People have various strategies for behavior, and we need that kind of variation, because in nature disasters and extinctions happen and if everyone did the same thing then it would be like putting all your eggs in the same basket. ]

Does course on Islam give law enforcers wrong idea?
Bukhari believes the need for police training on issues of profiling and bias was highlighted by an incident last summer in which the FBI launched an international search for two men who took photos below deck on a Washington state ferry. The FBI announced earlier this month that the men were tourists, not terrorists.
Bukhari said law-enforcement agencies need to learn about Islam, but not just in the context of terrorism.
But Solomon Bradman, CEO of Security Solutions International, which is conducting the program, said, "I can't take the responsibility of my course linking their religion to terrorism. I think their religion got linked to terrorism a long time ago."
The purpose of the course, Bradman said, is to teach officers how to protect people from terrorism. His company has provided training to hundreds of agencies, including the FBI, the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security.

Fake border crossing the new outdoor adventure
Gunshots ring out and sirens shriek, mixing with the ragged breath of muddy, panting humans. Suddenly, the full moon sweeping the ground like a searchlight reveals a disturbing scene: a group of illegal immigrants being handcuffed and led away by U.S. Border Patrol agents.
But the U.S. border is 700 miles from this rugged municipal park in Hidalgo state, a three-hour drive north of Mexico City. The spectacle unfolding here isn't an actual border crossing attempt but a live simulation-adventure that attempts to give participants a taste of what it's like for the thousands of Mexican and other Latin American undocumented migrants trying to enter the promised land of "el norte."
Dubbed the "Caminata Nocturna" (Night Hike), the three-hour simulation is a combination obstacle course, sociology lesson and PG-rated family outing. Founded in 2004, it's run by members of a local village of Hnahnu Indians, an indigenous people of south-central Mexico, whose population of about 2,500 has been decimated by migration to the United States
"It's part of our culture, and it's important to know it," said Sergio Mendieta, a secondary school teacher from the state of Mexico.

In the last five years alone, complaints to the Federal Trade Commission from U.S. residents who have had their identity stolen have skyrocketed 60 percent, to 258,427 in 2007- one-third of all consumer fraud complaints that the commission receives. What’s less well understood, however, is how illegal immigration is helping to fuel this rash of crime. Seeking access to jobs, credit, and driver’s licenses, many undocumented aliens are using the personal data of real Americans on forged documents. The immigrants' identity theft has become so pervasive that the need to combat it is "a disturbing front in the war against illegal immigration," according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Americans who have their identity stolen by these gangs are in for major headaches. Among the complaints filed with the FTC is that of a Texas man arrested for a crime committed by an illegal alien who had filched his identity. In another case, highlighted by Nevada senator John Ensign in last year's immigration-reform debate in Congress, the Internal Revenue Service hit a woman with a $1 million back-tax bill, even though she was a stay-at-home mom. An investigation later found that 218 illegal aliens were using her Social Security number. A Los Angeles police detectiveâ€"who, ironically, worked in the department's fraud bureauâ€"was unable to buy a home because of bills piled up by an illegal immigrant who stole his Social Security number to gain employment at a processing plant. Then the IRS served the cop with a bill for $40,000 in back taxes; when he protested, the agency threatened to send his case to collection. Other legal residents have had their unemployment claims or workers' compensation cases rejected after government records showed that someone with their Social Security number was working.

Jew Praises Liberal Guilt - especially inherited guilt
Critics of Obama supporters who use the phrase "guilty liberal" or "liberal guilt" in a condescending, above-it-all manner suggest there's something weak about feeling guilt; they paint a trivializing, Woody Allen caricature of it.
Actually, I think it requires a kind of strength, not weakness, to face the ugly truths of history and to react to them in an honest way. "Liberal guilt" isn't a reason one must automatically support a black candidate, but that doesn't mean that liberal guilt-better defined as an awareness of the need to contend with, and overcome, a racist past-shouldn't be a factor in politics.
Of course, it's not enough just to feel guilty or to act on guilt alone. But guilt can often spur us to deal with the enduring consequences of the injustices of the past and force us not to pretend there are none.

According to data found on a laptop confiscated by Colombian authorities, the terrorist group FARC may have had ties to left-wing politicians in Germany. E-mails found on the computer, confiscated after the recent killing of FARC commander Reyes, show that his son visited Berlin.
The Colombian guerrilla group FARC isn't just well connected in the region. According to e-mails found on the laptop of the recently killed FARC commander RaĂşl Reyes, the group, listed by the European Union as a terrorist organization, also has close ties to the far left in Germany.
E-mails on the computer indicate that, according to "Roberto," Gehrcke suggested that the PDS could back a bid in the European Parliament to remove FARC from the list of terrorist organizations. "It was a very positive meeting," "Roberto" wrote. "We were able to solidify a number of points to reactivate the solidarity with the fight of the Colombian people."

What Would It Cost to Save Nature?
"This forest stores carbon dioxide, and thus helps to slow down global warming. It regulates the global water supply and holds valuable pharmaceuticals," says Schipulle, a veteran environmentalist who works for the German government. "We must finally realize that these are services that are worth something to us."
Schipulle is in the region on a sensitive mission. Since December, he has headed the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP), a group founded by Americans, Europeans and the countries along the Congo River. The alliance aims to prevent the Congo basin from being plundered and transformed into oil palm and coffee plantations by mid-century. The Congo rainforest is still largely in one piece, but investors from around the world have already discovered the region's potential for big business -- ore, diamonds, plantations and lumber. But Schipulle and his partners have other plans for the Congo basin. They want international financial institutions or the world community to fork over money to preserve the rainforest as it is today. The threat of clear-cutting poses a double risk for the world. First, destroying the Congo rainforest would eliminate one of the earth's most important cooling systems. Second, the carbon dioxide (CO2) released as a result of slash-and-burn agriculture would further accelerate global warming.
An Emissions Trading Market for the Congo Rainforest
Schipulle firmly believes in this vision. The World Bank already plans to incorporate the entire Congo basin into its Forest Carbon Partnership program. The Washington-based organization wants to enter the emissions trading market with the CO2 stored by the Congo rainforest. Because deforestation in tropical regions is responsible for about 20 percent of climate change, protecting the forest is synonymous with protecting the climate -- and the world community is increasingly willing to pay a lot of money to make that happen.

Race And Conspicuous Consumption
To examine spending by racial groups, Roussanov and his colleagues studied data collected from 1986 to 2002 for the Consumer Expenditure Survey conducted by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Blacks and Hispanics spend up to 30% more than whites of comparable income on visible goods like clothing, cars and jewelry, the researchers found. This meant that, compared to white households of similar income, the typical black and Hispanic household spent $2,300 more per year on visible items. To do that, they spent less on almost all other categories (except housing), and they saved less.
Visible items are those others can see when one is in public. The researchers found that blacks and Hispanics do not spend more than whites on items such as home furnishings that could serve as status symbols but aren't seen by as many people.
This may explain the chief exception the researchers found in the data: Older people don't spend more on visible goods, even if their incomes are the same as those of younger people who do. Perhaps it's the wisdom of age, or the fact that older people grew up in "different
times." But it's more likely, says Roussanov, that older people, regardless of their community, don't need status symbols as much because they're generally not out hunting for jobs and mates.

Police chief says immigration figures are wrong and predicts "tension"

Tens of thousands of immigrants flee for home
South Africa's bloodletting is a long way from the ethnic killings of Rwanda and Kenya. But at least 43 people have been murdered and tens of thousands forced from their homes as mobs hunted down African immigrants in a dozen Johannesburg suburbs and satellite townships. With it has come looting and rape.
Thousands of immigrants are fleeing home. About 15,000 Mozambicans crossed the border back to their country on Thursday alone. Others packed Johannesburg's bus and train stations looking for a way out. Many thousands are crammed into police compounds and community halls.
More than 2,000 immigrants, mostly Zimbabweans, are sheltering at the Central Methodist Church. They fill every space, sleeping on the pews, in the corridors, on the stairs. About a third are women and children. Makeshift defensive weapons are everywhere - bricks, wood from broken chairs, metal bars.

Chinese government repatriates "economic migrant" partner in any Chinese couple
Take Sun Hwa (not her real name), a seven-year old girl, for example. She was born in China, to a Chinese father and a North Korean mother. Under Chinese law, she is entitled to Chinese nationality at birth.
But it wasn't until a few months ago that she was registered under the Chinese household registration system or hukou. Sun Hwa's father had faced two terrible options: registering her at the risk of exposing her North Korean mother, who could then be arrested and repatriated, or not registering her, and thus denying his daughter a legal identity and legal access to education.
The concerns faced by Sun Hwa's parents are not unfounded. For years, China has been arresting and summarily repatriating many North Korean women living with Chinese men, including those with children.

Sun lotions help to kill coral reefs
Tourists heading to the tropics were warned yesterday that their suntan lotion can kill off one of the main attractions of their holiday - the colourful corals that thrive in warmer waters. Residues from sunscreens that wash off in the sea were shown by researchers to cause coral bleaching, a condition that leads to the death of the organism and the collapse of delicate ocean eco-systems.
Chemical compounds that make up the ultra-violet (UV) filters in sunscreens, which are essential to protect the skin against burning, were shown to be harmful to coral reefs, even in small quantities.The researchers called for regulations to limit human contact with reefs where the coral was already suffering from other environmental threats such as rising sea temperatures.

A US car dealer has seen his sales soar after he launched a promotion offering customers a free handgun with every car.
Max Motors, a small car dealer in Butler, Missouri in the US Midwest, has seen sales quadruple since the introduction this week of a scheme offering customers either a $250 voucher for a gun or the alternative of a gas card.
Mark Muller, the owner of the dealership, said that he had sold more than 30 cars and trucks in the past three days but only two customers had opted for the gas card.
"We did it because of Barack Obama," Mr Muller said, referring to the Democratic presidential hopeful. "He said all those people in the Midwest, you've got to have compassion for them because they’re clinging to their guns and their Bibles. I found that quite offensive."

Israeli fighter pilots threatened to blast Tony Blair's jet out of sky
Tony Blair came within moments of being killed when two Israeli fighter aircraft threatened to shoot down a private jet taking him to a Middle East conference in the belief that it might have been staging a terrorist attack.
The warplanes were scrambled to intercept after the jet pilot failed to contact air traffic control. Mr Blair, the international community's envoy to the Middle East, was flying from the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to attend a major conference on private investment in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.
The Israeli aircraft used to intercept Mr Blair's plane would have been versions of the F16 or F15, armed with Shafrir and Python air-to-air missiles. Both missiles have proved to be devastatingly effective and versatile. The Shafrir 2 missile shot down nearly 100 aircraft in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Truth about mass killings in Korea revealed
Grave by mass grave, South Korea is unearthing the skeletons and buried truths of a cold-blooded slaughter from early in the Korean War, when this nation's U.S.-backed regime killed untold thousands of leftists and hapless peasants in a summer of terror in 1950.
With U.S. military officers sometimes present, and as North Korean invaders pushed down the peninsula, the southern army and police emptied South Korean prisons, lined up detainees and shot them in the head, dumping the bodies into hastily dug trenches. Others were thrown into abandoned mines or into the sea. Women and children were among those killed. Many victims never faced charges or trial.
The mass executions --intended to keep possible southern leftists from reinforcing the northerners -- were carried out over mere weeks and were largely hidden from history for a half-century. They were "the most tragic and brutal chapter of the Korean War," said historian Kim Dong-choon, a member of a 2-year-old government commission investigating the killings.
Hundreds of sets of remains have been uncovered so far, but researchers say they are only a tiny fraction of the deaths. The commission estimates at least 100,000 people were executed, in a South Korean population of 20 million.
That estimate is based on projections from local surveys and is "very conservative," said Kim. The true toll may be twice that or more, he told The Associated Press.

Threat of Another Riot in Crown Heights Called Overblown
The executive vice president of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Rabbi Chanina Sperlin, seemed mystified at the idea that relations between blacks and Jews in Crown Heights are deteriorating.
"I don't think we have problems with our African-American neighbors," he said. "The problem is gangs from outside."
Rabbi Sperlin downplayed reports of daily attacks against Jews in the neighborhood that elected officials have cited as the reason for their concern.
"What could I tell you: Last night there was no assault, the night before there was no assault," he said, although he did acknowledge that last week there had been three confrontations.

TDSB gives final approval for Afrocentric school
The Toronto District School Board debated last night a host of measures aimed at making schools safer, and gave final approval to establishing an Afrocentric elementary school in North York by 2009.
Trustee Stephnie Payne called the safety plan unveiled this week in response to the school shooting death of 15-year-old Jordan Manners "a watered-down document," which she said lacked community consultation. "I understand the Manners family was not pleased," said Ms. Payne. "How do you expect to get buy-in
from the community.... If there is no community consultation?"
And she expressed concerns about promises for a "police presence" in schools, which she said would make students afraid to attend.
Trustee Chris Bolton said the plan was "an honest" response to a January school safety report that exposed alarming levels of gun, and sexual violence in Toronto high schools.

Racist posters in parts of Phila. deemed legal
Racist posters put up in Port Richmond and Northeast Philadelphia were "repugnant," but still legal, the city's Commission on Human Relations said yesterday.
The poster features a photo of slain Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, who was killed while trying to apprehend bank robbers earlier this month in Port Richmond.
The poster also shows three other white Philadelphia police officers killed in the line of duty, and the three black men charged in their deaths. It reads: "Guns don't kill people. Dangerous minorities do. How much longer can you ignore this?"
A local group calling itself the Keystone State Skinheads took credit for the posters.

Can Obama win over Jewish voters?
Barack Obama on Thursday promised "an unshakable commitment to Israel's security" as he sought to reassure doubtful Jewish voters. He also said he hopes to help improve relations between American blacks and Jews.
In a passionate appearance at a synagogue, Obama courted Jewish voters by reaffirming his opposition to negotiating with the militant Palestinian group Hamas and said talks with Iranian leaders could help strengthen Israeli security.

Texas seizure of polygamist-sect kids thrown out
Texas - An appellate court decision upended the custody case that sent more than 440 children from a polygamist sect's ranch into foster care, but it's not clear whether the children might soon return home.
The Third Court of Appeals in Austin said the state failed to show the youngsters were in any immediate danger, the only grounds under Texas law for taking children from their parents without court action.
Texas District Judge Barbara Walther now has 10 days to release the youngsters from custody, but the state could appeal to the Texas Supreme Court and keep the children from immediately going back to their parents.

Egyptian press blasts Bush over 'Torah-inspired' Knesset speech
Egypt's state-owned press opened fire Saturday on U.S. President George W. Bush as he arrived for talks with regional leaders at the conclusion of a five-day Mideast tour.
The newspapers, whose management are all appointed by the government, criticized Bush's speech Thursday in front of the Israeli Knesset for being overly supportive of the Israelis and not mentioning the Palestinians' plight.
"The Torah-inspired speech of Bush raised question marks over the credibility of the U.S. role in the Middle East," wrote Mursi Atallah, the publisher of Al-Ahram, the flagship daily of the state-owned press. "Bush aims to do nothing but appeasing Israel."

Feds: Drugs made at kosher meat plant
Federal authorities charged that a methamphetamine laboratory was operating at the nation's largest kosher slaughterhouse and that employees carried weapons to work.
The charges were among the most explosive details to emerge following the massive raid Monday at Agriprocessors in Postville, Iowa.
According to the application, a former plant supervisor told investigators that some 80 percent of the workforce was illegal. They included rabbis responsible for kosher supervision, who the source believed entered the United States from Canada without proper immigration documents. The source did not provide evidence for his suspicion about the rabbis.
The source also claimed to have confronted a human resources manager with Social Security cards from three employees that had the same number. The manager laughed when the matter was raised, the source said.

Unapologetic Hagee Says Hitler Statement Was "Mischaracterized"
Pastor John Hagee said on Thursday that his controversial sermon, in which he said Hitler was fulfilling God's will for a state of Israel, had been "intentionally mischaracterized" and constituted a "gross example of bias." In a statement to The Huffington Post, he did not apologize for or distance himself from the sermon, saying simply that he had long grappled with how God "who controls what happens here on earth" could allow the Holocaust.
"To assert that I in any way condone the Holocaust or that monster Adolf Hitler is the biggest and ugliest of lies," Hagee wrote. "I have always condemned the horrors of the Holocaust in the strongest of terms. But even more importantly, my abhorrence of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism has never stopped with mere words."
The Huffington Post, which reported the story after it was first revealed by Talk To Action's Bruce Wilson, never wrote that Hagee condoned the Holocaust. Rather, the story, highlighting a more than two-minute section from the Reverend's sermon, The Battle of Jerusalem, noted that Hagee had posited that Adolph Hitler had been a "hunter" who was tasked with expediting God's will of having the Jews re-establish a state of Israel.

Aussies lose millions to Nigerian scams
Nigerian authorities are presently prosecuting nine "advance fee" fraudsters who conned unsuspecting Queenslanders, but millions of dollars continue to flow out to African scammers, Queensland Police warns.
"Unfortunately, we see more more money leaving our shores every day," Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, operations commander of the Fraud and Corporate Crime Group, said.
"Just last week, I was on the phone to a person who had sent $585,000 believing he was involved with a pipeline business venture with Nigerian government officials.
"This was an intelligent, articulate man who was successfully self-employed, yet I had difficulty persuading him not to send any more money."

This prison is majority Muslim -- as is virtually every house of incarceration in France. About 60 to 70 percent of all inmates in the country's prison system are Muslim, according to Muslim leaders, sociologists and researchers, though Muslims make up only about 12 percent of the country's population.
On a continent where immigrants and the children of immigrants are disproportionately represented in almost every prison system, the French figures are the most marked, according to researchers, criminologists and Muslim leaders.

South African anti-immigrant violence spreads
President Thabo Mbeki tonight ordered troops into South Africa's troubled townships as violence against black migrant workers spread across the country, threatening the city of Cape Town.
President Thabo Mbeki has announced the establishment of a "special committee" to examine the causes of the violence but his own government's failings to address the widespread poverty within South Africa itself and deal with the deteriorating situation in Zimbabwe are blamed by opposition parties, human rights groups and NGOs.
The Institute of Race Relations issued a scathing indictment on Mbeki's style of government, listing rampant crime, unemployment, education and corruption as they key areas where his government had failed.
"In failing to maintain the rule of law, the state had conditioned many poor communities to violent behaviour," the Institute said.

Kenyan Officials: Mob Burned to Death 11 People Accused of Witchcraft
A group of up to 300 young men have burned to death 11 people suspected of being witches and wizards in western Kenya in some cases slitting their victims' throats or clubbing them to death before burning their bodies, officials said.
The gang moved from home to home through two villages, identifying their victims by using a list with names of suspected witches and wizards and the kind spells they were believed to have cast on the community, said Ben Makori, a local councilor.

Messianic Jews in Israel say they want an inquiry into the burning of hundreds of copies of the New Testament by Orthodox Jews in Or Yehuda last week.
The books were given to the town's Ethiopian Jews by the Messianic Jews, who believe in Jesus as a saviour.

Alleged Nazi Loses Deportation Fight
An 88-year-old man suspected of having been a Nazi death camp guard is facing deportation from the US after the Supreme Court refused to hear his case.
John Demjanjuk is alleged to have been 'Ivan the Terrible', the guard who operated the gas chambers at Treblinka death camp in Poland.
However, he maintains that he served in the Soviet army and was captured by German forces in 1942 and became a prisoner of war.
In 2002, a US judge ruled that while Demjanjuk may not have been the gas chamber operative, there was evidence that proved he was a Nazi guard at various death or forced labour camps.

Some 6,000 representatives from 191 countries are attending the 11-day conference on the UN's convention on biodiversity, which was first adopted at the Rio Earth summit in 1992.
"The industrialised countries must recognise the need to share natural resources with those with those who have safeguarded them," Sigmar Gabriel declared.
"It is a question of principle, a question of justice," he said. "The developing countries are right to speak of "biopiracy", when the industrialised world use their resources without authorisation and without paying a penny," he said.

Israel not al-Qaida's primary concern?
Osama bin Laden released a new audio message last week in which he termed the Palestinian issue the "core reason" for al-Qaida's war against the West, and a major impetus for the 9/11 attacks. This is the second time in less than six months that he has tried to put Israel center stage: In December, he issued an audiotape threatening to "expand our jihad" to Israel in order to "liberate Palestine, the whole of Palestine, from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea." Yet in reality, Israel has never been of much interest to al-Qaida. Thus it is crucial to understand what bin Laden seeks to achieve by pretending otherwise.
Yet to date, there has not been a single documented al-Qaida attack on Israel - even as the organization successfully staged attacks in countries as diverse as the United States, Kenya and Saudi Arabia, while helping allies stage additional attacks in countries from Indonesia to Spain. Given al-Qaida's track record, there is only one possible explanation for this failure: The group has never seriously tried to target Israel.

"Fast as Greyhounds, Tough as Leather, Hard as Krupp Steel." That's how Adolf Hitler described the Hitler Youth in 1935. Over the weekend, the slogan appeared on the backs of firemen in eastern Germany.
A volunteer fire brigade from a village in eastern Germany is in trouble after showing up to a local competition with an infamous motto of the Hitler youth on the backs of their polo shirts, written in Gothic script.
The eight members of the fire brigade from the village of Gross Gaglow were among hundreds of firemen from the southern Brandenburg region of eastern Germany to take part in a fire extinguishing competition in the town of LĂĽbbenau on Saturday.

German Postal Service Admits Inadvertently Printing Hess Stamp
Neo-Nazis in Germany used a personalized stamp service to create a stamp carrying the picture of Rudolf Hess, Adolf Hitler's deputy. A spokesman for Deutsche Post confirmed the company's embarrassing slip-up on Wednesday.
Dirk Klasen told the German daily Die Tageszeitung that an order for 20 stamps featuring the war criminal had been sent out by the company. Since February, Deutsche Post has been offering a service which enables people to design their own stamps by uploading pictures over the Internet.
The slip-up was celebrated in the latest edition Deutsche Stimme (German Voice), the monthly magazine of the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD), the Associated Press reported on Wednesday. "The Hess stamp is out there," Hannes Natter wrote in the magazine.

Hispanic writes of the white fear of decline
Since the civil rights movement, though, it's also been taboo to speak of the collective interests of white people in polite company. To mention whites as an interest group -- in the way we do minority groups -- hearkens back to segregation and worse.
Sure, we've discussed the importance of subgroups of whites -- soccer moms and NASCAR dads. But analysts didn't treat their whiteness as the primary thing that determined their political behavior, in the way that, say, Latino voters are almost always presumed to vote based on ethnic considerations.
But the Obama-Clinton rivalry seems to have changed all that, and we're now openly discussing white working-class voters in ways that make clear that their racial interests play a role in their political preferences. Last week, exit polls in West Virginia showed that Barack Obama might be facing some fierce racial resistance if he becomes the Democratic nominee. More than half of West Virginia Democratic voters -- 95% of whom are white -- said they would be dissatisfied if Obama won the nomination.
Is this white supremacy? No, in fact it might be its opposite, an acknowledgment that white privilege has its limits. With immigration and globalization reformulating who we are as a nation, it isn't the white elites that are threatened by the changes; rather, it's the nearly 70% of whites who are not college educated who figure among the most insecure of Americans. Many feel that their jobs are being outsourced or taken by immigrants -- legal or otherwise -- and that their culture is being subsumed. When Clinton promises to make their voices heard, she's appealing not to Anglo-Saxon racial triumphalism but to the fear of white decline.

Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Monday called on Google to remove Internet video content produced by terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda. The videos - readily available on YouTube - show assassinations, deaths of U.S. soldiers and civilians, weapons training, incendiary speeches by al-Qaeda leadership, and other material intended to encourage violence against the West.

South African blacks attack immigrants for taking their jobs
Zimbabweans have condemned the xenophobic attacks taking place in South Africa targeting foreign nationals, according to the state media New Ziana on Tuesday.
At least 22 immigrants have been killed in the attacks, most prominent in Johnnesburg. The orgy of violence has left about 3,000 immigrants homeless, forcing them to seek refuge in churches and police camps while some are contemplating going back to their home countries.
Zimbabweans from all walks of life in Harare who spoke to New Ziana condemned the perpetrators of violence, saying it was unjustified for South Africans to treat their fellow Africans in an inhumane way.

Now Mr. Parker is a filmmaker working on a project about black culture in a white world. The 34-year-old Prince George's County resident will return to his roots today to talk about crime in a community forum called "Why are black men killing each other?"In his view, the reasons are varied. Some of them are internal, including lack of self esteem and lack of education or marketable skills that make employment challenging. Some reasons come from the outside.
Media portrayals of black people and a lack of black male role models in many children's lives also have a large impact.
Black men are told, indirectly, that they are worthless, Mr. Parker said, and to some people, that makes it OK to kill another "worthless" person.
Drugs also are a cause. People who think they're worthless often drop out of school, leading them to have difficulty getting legitimate jobs, he explained.
"(They think) 'What am I to do but sell drugs?" he said. "It's a trap ... People don't see any other way out of public housing."

Racist taunts drive white girl to suicide
A teenage girl with red hair hanged herself after being subjected to repeated taunts including being called "Ginger", "Freckle face" and "Pig nose", an inquest was told yesterday.
Kelsey Jade Winter, 13, coloured her hair blonde and wore heavy foundation to mask her freckles because of severe bullying by fellow pupils at Teesdale Comprehensive School, Co Durham. She died on August 12 after hanging herself from the handle of her bedroom window.
It was not the first time that the teenager â€" described by her parents as hard-working and bubbly â€" had attempted to harm herself. Two months before her death, she told a school counsellor that she had put a belt around her neck and had decided to "end it all".

Crips founder shot, killed
The Aurora Police Department this morning confirmed that the man gunned down in front of an apartment building on Saturday morning is Michael Darren Asberry, one of the co-founders of the Crips street gang in the metro area.
Asberry had renounced his gang connections and his criminal past, but continued to have trouble holding down a job, because his history kept catching up with him, Kelly said.
Kelly declined to say much about the shooting but said it is his understanding that the shooting was not the work of the Bloods gang, the longtime rivals of the Crips.
"It's almost like that gunslinger mentality," he said. "You hang up your guns and you have to deal with the young ones who want to come along and try you."

More Germans left the country in 2007 than in any year since reunification
The figures showed 165,180 German citizens migrated elsewhere last year, an increase of nearly 10,000 from 2006, with Switzerland, the United States, Poland and Austria the top destinations.
A total of 111,291 Germans returned from abroad, resulting in a net loss of 53,889 citizens in 2007, the third straight year in which more Germans have left the country than returned.

Animals jailed in Mexico
A donkey is doing time in southern Mexico for assault and battery.
The animal was locked up at a local jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances after it bit and kicked two men near a ranch in Chiapas state, police said Monday.
"Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed," Gomez said â€" "no matter who they are."
Chiapas police have thrown animals in the slammer before, including a bull that devoured corn crops and destroyed two wooden vending stands in March.

A humble priest is taking on the might of the Playboy porn empire by protesting the company's "cynical and wicked" branding of stationery aimed at young children.

'Big Brother' database for phones and e-mails - UK
A massive government database holding details of every phone call, e-mail and time spent on the internet by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism. Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.
The information would be held for at least 12 months and the police and security services would be able to access it if given permission from the courts.

US Taxpayers' bill leaps by trillions
The federal government's long-term financial obligations grew by $2.5 trillion last year, a reflection of the mushrooming cost of Medicare and Social Security benefits as more baby boomers reach retirement.
That's double the red ink of a year earlier.
Taxpayers are on the hook for a record $57.3 trillion in federal liabilities to cover the lifetime benefits of everyone eligible for Medicare, Social Security and other government programs, a USA TODAY analysis found. That's nearly $500,000 per household.
When obligations of state and local governments are added, the total rises to $61.7 trillion, or $531,472 per household. That is more than four times what Americans owe in personal debt such as mortgages.

Orthodox Jew is a "Person of Interest" in "Bias Attack" on Negro
City police are seeking a Jewish man for questioning in an alleged bias attack on a black man in Crown Heights.
Yitzhak Shuchat, 25, is "a person of interest," in the April 14 beating that left the victim hospitalized in stable condition, the NYPD said in an alert Friday morning asking the public's help locating Shuchat.
Police want to talk to Shuchat about the incident, which took place around 6:30 p.m. on Carroll Street between Kingston and Albany.
A 20-year-old black man told the police that while he was walking on Carroll Street "a black SUV pulled up along side him and a [white man] asked 'What are you looking at!' The victim responded 'What are you looking at!' The victim reported that several [white men] exited the vehicle and he was struck with a wooden object and Maced," a city police report said.

Fat paupers feel the pinch of higher food prices
Because food stamp allotments are adjusted every fall based on the federal food inflation rate, recipients are months away from getting any relief. But even when that relief comes, advocates said, it won't come close to keeping pace with rising costs.
The consumer price index for food rose 5 percent last year, the highest gain in nearly two decades. It is especially grim news for the poor.
"Ain't got no food left, the kids are probably hungry," said Brown, a 23-year-old single mother who relies heavily on her $312 monthly allotment of food stamps â€" a ration adjusted just once a year, in October.

68% of Italians want Roma expelled - poll
Sixty-eight per cent of Italians, fuelled by often inflammatory attacks by the new rightwing government, want to see all of the country's 150,000 Gypsies, many of them Italian citizens, expelled, according to an opinion poll.
The survey, published as mobs in Naples burned down Gypsy camps this week, revealed that the majority also wanted all Gypsy camps in Italy to be demolished .
About 70,000 Gypsies in Italy hold Italian passports, including about 30,000 descended from 15th-century Gypsy settlers in the country. The remainder have arrived since, many fleeing the Balkans during the 1990s.

Congressman's multi million-dollar grant to Hispanics
An extremist Mexican "La Raza" group that annually gets millions of U.S. federal grant dollars will receive even more taxpayer money in the next few years thanks to a Massachusetts congressman's multi million-dollar earmark to counsel Hispanics about housing.
The National Council of La Raza already got $1.3 million from the Department of Housing and Urban Development this year to conduct "comprehensive housing counseling" for Hispanics, whether they are in the country legally or not. Now the radical group that advocates the return of the American Southwest to Mexico, will get an additional $15 million thanks to an earmark inserted by Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank in a housing bill.

The elephant in the room: the link between immigration and the mortage mess
No one in Washington wants to talk about it - even as lawmakers pushed to include a now-dead $25 million earmark for the open-borders activists of La Raza/The Race and are preparing to hand over $100 million to the group and other left-wing organizations as part of the mortgage counseling racket.
The La Raza Development Fund has spent a decade securing home loans for low-income Latino families and there's no telling how many of them are illegal immigrants.

Italian public burn Roma shanty towns
Italian police began a nationwide round-up of nearly 400 illegal immigrants from the Balkans and North Africa yesterday in the midst of a series of arson attacks on Roma gypsy camps in the suburbs of Naples.
The first step in a drive on crime promised by the new centre-right government of Silvio Berlusconi targeted temporary encampments on the outskirts of cities from Naples to northern Italy. Some 118 people held in the operation were ordered to be expelled immediately for offences ranging from drug dealing and robbery to prostitution.
But in Naples local people have anticipated the new policy, taking the law into their own hands.
This week's assaults on Roma shanty towns by scores of youths on scooters and motorbikes wielding iron bars and throwing Molotov cocktails were sparked off by the capture of a 17-year-old Roma girl who last weekend entered a flat in Ponticelli and tried to steal a 6-year-old girl. Chased by the mother and neighbours, she had to be rescued by police from being lynched.

US attempts to claim Iran arms Shiite militias in Iraq encounters not just one but two setbacks.
The government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki refused to endorse U.S. charges of Iranian involvement in arms smuggling to the Mahdi Army, and a plan to show off a huge collection of Iranian arms captured in and around Karbala had to be called off after it was discovered that none of the arms were of Iranian origin.
The news media's failure to report that the arms captured from Shiite militiamen in Karbala did not include a single Iranian weapon shielded the U.S. military from a much bigger blow to its anti-Iran strategy.
The Bush administration and top Iraq commander Gen. David Petraeus had plotted a sequence of events that would build domestic U.S. political support for a possible strike against Iran over its "meddling" in Iraq and especially its alleged export of arms to Shiite militias.
The plan was keyed to a briefing document to be prepared by Petraeus on the alleged Iranian role in arming and training Shiite militias that would be surfaced publicly after the al-Maliki government had endorsed it and it used to accuse Iran publicly.

Black attackers nearly killed White man with crowbar - police can't afford investigation
A businessman who was almost beaten to death by three crowbar-wielding burglars claims police haven't carried out DNA tests to identify his attackers â€" because they can't afford to pay for them.
IT consultant Simon Pither, 36, was savagely beaten over the head when he interrupted the gang at his ÂŁ300,000 home.
The married father of two sustained such serious skull injuries during the assault that doctors told him he was lucky to be alive.
The three men, who were black and aged between 17 and 25, made off with a camera, an iPod, a watch and some memory sticks.

Authenticated Documents Put Pressure On Venezuela's Chavez to Explain Damning FARC Ties
Interpol on Thursday endorsed the authenticity of computer files seized in a rebel camp, announcing that Colombia did not tamper with documents indicating Chavez sought to finance and arm the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
Venezuelan officials set up contacts with Australian arms dealers and arranged for missile training in the Middle East, according to the documents, which were on computer hard drives seized by Colombia and obtained by the Washington Post.
"Do you think we should waste time here on something so ridiculous?" he told reporters in Caracas.
Chavez has denied providing the FARC material support, but did not address the issue directly on Thursday. Instead, he called Interpol's secretary general, Ronald Noble, "a tremendous actor," "Mr. Ignoble" and an "immoral police officer who applauds killers."

Britain's provocation of terrorism puts all of Europe at risk
Britain is the focal point for Islamic terrorism across Europe, and its controversial military campaigns overseas are putting the entire continent at risk, a disturbing new report has warned.

Dutch cartoonist arrested for 'insulting people'
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A Dutch political cartoonist was arrested this week on suspicion of insulting people because of their race or religion through his work, authorities said Friday.
The cartoonist, who works under the pseudonym Gregorius Nekschot, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of violating hate speech laws and held overnight before being released, a spokeswoman for his publisher Uitgeverij Xtra said.
"He was arrested with a great show of force, by around 10 policemen," the spokeswoman said.

Australia: 'Hidden' migrants drive ethnic change
AUSTRALIA is undergoing an unparalleled movement of people and ethnic change through "hidden immigration", but lacks a comprehensive policy to deal with it, according to an eminent demographer.
Monash University professor Andrew Markus said raw immigration numbers masked the magnitude of a demographic revolution that had produced a population where one in four residents was born overseas.
At 24 per cent, the overseas-born proportion of the population is twice that of the US at 12 per cent, and three times that of England and Wales at 8 per cent, where racial tensions have flared again.

TV documentary on Muslims led to police action against documentary makers - UK
The Home Secretary has come under pressure to investigate the behaviour of West Midlands Police, after the force issued a grovelling apology to documentary-makers who exposed extremism in Birmingham mosques.
MP Roger Godsiff (Lab Sparkbrook and Small Heath) called for an inquiry to discover why police had targeted Channel 4, broadcaster of the Dispatches documentary, instead of prosecuting the "religious and racial hatred" uncovered by the programme.
The documentary Dispatches: Undercover Mosque, broadcast in January 2007, showed preachers and teachers stating "Allah created the woman deficient" and "by the age of 10, it becomes an obligation on us to force her (young girls) to wear hijab and if she doesn’t wear hijab, we hit her".
Other statements included "take that homosexual and throw him off the mountain" and "whoever changes his religion from Al Islam to anything else - kill him in the Islamic state".

Missouri Senate passes wide-ranging immigration bill
The Missouri Senate has passed a wide-ranging illegal immigration bill.
It would bar so-called "sanctuary cities," authorize state troopers to be trained to enforce federal immigration laws, and require driver's license tests be given in English.
But it also contains an amendment that leaders in the State House don't like.
That amendment would fine employers who misclassify undocumented workers as "contractors" up to $50,000.

U.N. racism investigator to visit U.S. from Monday
A special U.N. human rights investigator will visit the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
A U.N. panel which examined the U.S. record on racial discrimination last March urged the United States to halt racial profiling of Americans of Arab, Muslim and South Asian descent and to ensure immigrants and non-nationals are not mistreated.
It also said America should impose a moratorium on the death penalty and stop sentencing young offenders to life in prison until it can root out racial bias from its justice system.
[ What is meant is that the only possible explanation for more blacks being jailed than whites is racial prejudice and hatred. ]

Nutter hopes to stop the "staggering" recidivism rate
Today, a newly released national report on the re-entry of ex-offenders should come in handy at Mayor Nutter's "Re-entry Summit" at Temple University Health System, where 300 people are gathering to address the problems of ex-offenders.
Recidivism is so overwhelming, the U.S. Justice Department found, that "two out of three inmates are rearrested within three years of being released from prison. Just over half are reincarcerated."
"We're focusing on decreasing the risks of performing another crime," Leaphart said.

'Elitist' leadership alienating U.S. Jews, says prominent sociologist
The perception that the American Jewish leadership is "elitist, parochial, self-serving and resistant to innovation," is fueling a decline in Jewish communal participation in the U.S., a leading sociologist said this week.
In a policy paper prepared ahead of the President's Conference, "Facing Tomorrow," Professor Chaim Waxman asserted that a sense of "too much overlap, duplication, and non-cooperation" among organizations in the American Jewish establishment is also disillusioning, especially among the younger generation, in regards to Jewish organizational life.
"There is a sense among some that the older established organizations are incapable of making the changes necessary to accomplish what some non-establishment organizations have been able to achieve," he wrote. Waxman also pointed to the perception that the American Jewish establishment seems closed to those "who are not members of the "'old boys club,' the circle of wealthy, old men who are at the helms of most major Jewish organizations." He stressed, however, that these perceptions were just some of the many factors contributing to a decline in communal participation and a general "disillusionment" with the organized Jewish community.

NASA study links Earth impacts to human-caused climate change
A new NASA-led study shows human-caused climate change has made an impact on a wide range of Earth's natural systems, including permafrost thawing, plants blooming earlier across Europe, and lakes declining in productivity in Africa.
Cynthia Rosenzweig of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Science in New York and scientists at 10 other institutions have linked physical and biological impacts since 1970 with rises in temperatures during that period. The study, to be published May 15 in the journal Nature, concludes human-caused warming is resulting in a broad range of impacts across the globe.
"This is the first study to link global temperature data sets, climate model results, and observed changes in a broad range of physical and biological systems to show the link between humans, climate, and impacts," said Rosenzweig, lead author of the study.
To arrive at the link, the authors built and analyzed a database of more than 29,000 data series pertaining to observed impacts on Earth's natural systems. The data were collected from about 80 studies, each with at least 20 years of records between 1970 and 2004.

Researchers warn of nitrogen hazard to environment
While carbon dioxide has been getting lots of publicity in climate change, reactive forms of nitrogen are also building up in the environment, scientists warn.
While nitrogen alone is inert and harmless, reactive nitrogen compounds - such as ammonia - have been released by its use in nitrogen-based fertilizers and the large-scale burning of fossil fuels.
Various forms of nitrogen contribute to greenhouse warming, smog, haze, acid rain dead zones with little or no life along the coasts, and depletion of the ozone layer in the stratosphere, the researchers concluded.

Airbus and Algae: Why Biofuels Won't Cut It
We noted yesterday aviation's uphill battle to replace tradititional and increasingly expensive jet fuel with alternative fuels. Today, Airbus and Honeywell announced a new project to provide one-third of aviation's fuel needs by 2030 using second-generation biofuels made from things like vegetable biomass and algae.
The problem is, even if the Airbus plan works exactly as expected, it won't make a difference in terms of aviation's emissions problem.
Today, aviation uses about 5 million barrels a day of jet kerosene. Assume healthy efficiency gains, and you could still see 12 million barrels a day of jet kero on the tarmac in 2030.
So what would the Airbus algae formula do? Substitute one-third of that, or 4 million. That leaves 8 million barrels a day of old-fashioned kerosene contrails in the sky - almost twice as much as today.
[ Biofuels burn just like fossil fuels... and leave pollutants as well. We're just prolonging the inevitable: the end of cheap growth. ]

Wildlife numbers plummet globally: WWF
The world's wildlife populations have reduced by around a quarter since the 1970s, according to a major report published Friday by the WWF conservation organization.
Marine species have been particularly hard hit as the human population booms, while numbers of birds and, fish and animals have also gone down, said the WWF in a report.
[ Half of all species exist in the rainforests and it looks like they will all be cleared. It's doubful humans will survive after that. ]

Documents link wind farm foes to energy firm
A new lobbying firm for the group opposing a wind farm off Cape Cod filed a federal document last month reporting that its work for the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound is partially funded and shaped by an international energy conglomerate.
The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound immediately decried the filing as a mistake, and the lobbying firm later amended it in the US Senate Office of Public Records to eliminate the reference to Oxbow.
"They have their own money," said Brad Goldstein, Oxbow's corporate communications director, who said he would not consider his company to be directly involved in the group's lobbying.

"Guardian angel" of Brazil's rainforests gives up
Brazil has been accused of turning its back on its duty to protect the Amazon after the resignation of its award-winning Environment Minister fuelled fresh fears over the fate of the forest. The departure of Marina Silva, who admitted she was losing the battle to get green voices heard amidst the rush for economic development, has been greeted with dismay by conservationists.
"She was the environment's guardian angel," said Frank Guggenheim, executive director for Greenpeace in Brazil. "Now Brazil's environment is orphaned."
In a letter to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Ms Silva said that her efforts to protect the rainforest acknowledged as the "lungs of the planet" were being thwarted by powerful business lobbies. "Your Excellency was a witness to the growing resistance found by our team in important sectors of the government and society," she wrote.

Desmond Tutu: Equality of U.S. blacks an 'illusion'
"You are a crazy country," Tutu, 76, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, said in an interview with the Tribune. "You're a country that has I think some of the most generous people I've ever come across in the world."
Tutu, who headed South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission probing human-rights abuses under apartheid, was here to receive the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation's Lincoln Leadership Prize, presented by Oprah Winfrey.
Unlike in South Africa's apartheid era, he said, where blacks were treated as "nothing," in America, "You say to them, 'You're equal, and the sky's the limit.' And they keep bumping their heads against this thing that's stopping them from reaching out to the stars."

Striking changes in Arizona as illegal immigrants flee the state
Arizona is leading the nation in local enforcement of laws against illegal immigration. As illegal immigrants leave the state, the state's most serious problems such as traffic congestion and the expense of teaching English Language Learner classes are dissipating.
Fewer illegal immigrants are using hospital emergency rooms, so waiting times have decreased. Although the rest of the country is in an economic slump, unemployment is going down in Arizona, from 4.5% in January to 4.1% in March. Day laborers loitering outside of Home Depot and other stores have mostly disappeared, ending months of confrontation between illegal immigrant sympathizers and protesters. Desert lands near the border are returning to their pristine condition and the wildlife is coming back. Identity theft and car thefts are decreasing. No one showed up on May 1 to march in immigrant rallies.
With illegal immigrants leaving, the state will see huge savings as fewer illegal immigrants use social welfare programs and the cost of arresting, prosecuting, incarcerating and deporting them decreases. Arizona is facing one of the worst budget deficits ever, looming as high as $2 billion in 2009, but the situation may resolve itself.

Obama outraged by president's claim that talking to US foes in Middle East is like negotiating with Hitler
President George Bush used a visit to Israel yesterday to denounce Democratic party offers to negotiate with America's enemies in the Middle East as comparable to appeasement of Hitler. Although Bush did not name any Democratic politician, the party's presidential contender Barack Obama has offered to open negotiations with the Iranian leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.
Obama and other Democratic leaders expressed outrage at being compared to the Nazis, especially on a visit to Israel. They also condemned Bush for breaking a long-time convention against using foreign visits to score domestic points.
Obama described it as a "false political attack", saying he had never advocated talking to terrorists, while Joe Biden, the Democratic chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, said: "This is bullshit." The Democratic leader of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, described Bush's comments as "beneath the dignity of his office".

Bush predicts rosy scenario for Israel within another 60 years
"Israel will be celebrating the 120th anniversary as one of the world's great democracies, a secure and flourishing homeland for the Jewish people," Bush forecast. "The Palestinian people will have the homeland they have long dreamed of and deserve â€" a democratic state that is governed by law, and respects human rights, and rejects terror. He did not explain how that would be achieved. Bush predicted Iran and Syria would be peaceful nations and that the Islamic militant groups al-Qaida, Hezbollah and Hamas would be defeated.

Italy arrests 400 in illegal immigrants swoop
Italian police announced on Thursday the arrest of hundreds of suspected illegal immigrants in a sign of the new right-wing government's determination to clamp down.
Police arrested 383 people including 268 foreigners, with 53 immediately taken to the border for expulsion, in a week-long operation stretching from northern Italy to the Naples area.
In Libya, police have arrested 240 would-be illegal migrants from several African countries over the past four days as they prepared to sail to Italy, the Interior Ministry said.
Libya is a springboard for hundreds of thousands of Africans trying to reach Europe via Italy on board unseaworthy boats.

Chinese refusing to work for lowest paid jobs - companies relocating to Vietnam
What can Western companies do when China's factory workers start demanding better wages and conditions? Easy -- just transfer production to a cheaper country. China's loss is Vietnam's gain.
There is a shortage of 2 million workers in the Pearl River Delta alone, China's industrial zone abutting Hong Kong, where companies from Adidas to Mattel have their products manufactured. The manufacturers there compete relentlessly for labor, fighting desperately for each worker. This struggle marks a new chapter in the history of globalization.
For a long time, it seemed as if China, with its 1.3 billion people, offered the world an inexhaustible reservoir of low-wage workers.
China's planners know that their country has no future as a low-cost producer. Following in the footsteps of Japan and South Korea, they are converting their industrial base, hoping to catapult Chinese industry to the high-tech level. It is a change that Beijing's communist strategists are promoting as energetically as only dictatorships can.

Extremists Have Infiltrated Germany's Left Party, Authorities Warn
Germany's domestic intelligence agency has warned of "extremist structures" within the Left Party. A new report lists a number of left-wing extremist factions within the party, including the Communist Platform, the Marxist Forum and a pro-Cuba group.

Indians wish to become as obese as Americans
On May 2 George Bush was asked about food prices, and he responded with a common complaint of those in America who think that the rest of the world has too many people and that they are getting to be too middle class, having money to buy cars, electricity and better food. Bush said of India's growing middle class "when you start getting wealth, you start demanding better nutrition and better food, and so demand is high, and that causes the price to go up."
Indians were appalled. According to the IHT, Americans eat 3,770 calories per day on average, whereas Indians average 2,440 per day. Americans also eat by far the most beef, the most energy intensive food source. They ask "Why do Americans think they deserve to eat more than Indians?"
[ That is too many calories for either group. Indians are naturally smaller in stature than Americans and shouldn't exceed 2000 calories of nutritious food to be at their peak health. ]

Obama campaingers shocked by "horrible response" from White electorate
Here's the worst: In Muncie, a factory town in the east-central part of Indiana, Ross and her cohorts were soliciting support for Obama at malls, on street corners and in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and they ran into "a horrible response," as Ross put it, a level of anti-black sentiment that none of them had anticipated.
"The first person I encountered was like, 'I'll never vote for a black person,' " recalled Ross, who is white and just turned 20. "People just weren't receptive."
For all the hope and excitement Obama's candidacy is generating, some of his field workers, phone-bank volunteers and campaign surrogates are encountering a raw racism and hostility that have gone largely unnoticed -- and unreported -- this election season. Doors have been slammed in their faces. They've been called racially derogatory names (including the white volunteers). And they've endured malicious rants and ugly stereotyping from people who can't fathom that the senator from Illinois could become the first African American president.

Last month after the Pennsylvania caucus, I mentioned a Republican calculation that 15% of white voters would never vote for a Black man. Exit polls gave circumstantial confirmation.
Then came reports earlier this week of Obama canvassers confronting racists in the streets and on the phone.
Last night, more than half of West Virginia's 95% white voters said that they wouldn't be happy if Obama got the nomination. A shockingly large number say they would vote for McCain if he got the nomination.

Arabs taking Jews' jobs
Most of the customers do not usually realize that the woman who helps them in the mall to choose a pair of jeans, or the salesman for a hose for the garden, or ink for the printer, is an Arab resident of the Triangle, or Wadi Ara, or Ramle, or Lod or Galilee. But the number of
Arabs employed in the retail businesses or the services is growing, especially in the large chains and the telephone service depots.
Once, before the intifadas and the curfews, Jews would travel to Arab towns to do shopping. Today Arabs come in droves to the Jewish communities to sell in response to the needs of both sides - the economic interests of the employers and the socioeconomic interests of
the workers.
Moshe Rosenblum, CEO of Israel Malls, says the phenomenon stems, among other things, from the shortage of workers. "The chain stores pay minimum wage or a little more than that. A lot of Jews have become choosy, while many of the Arab women prove themselves to be very good sales people," he says. "An Arab salesman is prepared also to clean the
toilets and to work for minimum wage without fringe benefits. Jews, less so," says Adib Yihye, the owner of a manpower company from Kafr Kara.

No racism in the presidential election?
Meanwhile, some white Americans are turning themselves inside out to come up with excuses for why they're not supporting Obama. It seems like just yesterday that these folks were arguing there is no racism in the immigration debate, and now they're insisting there is no racism in the presidential election.
Some want to know why it isn't racist when 70 percent of African-Americans vote for Obama but it is when 70 percent of whites vote against him.
The answer has to do with history. Over the decades, black Americans have had plenty of opportunities to vote for white people for president. And they have done so. But this is the first time that white Americans have a chance to vote for an African-American with a shot at the presidency. And what are they doing?

Two billion trees planted in UN campaign
More than two billion trees were planted around the world as part of the UN's campaign to combat climate change, the world body's environment programme (UNEP) said Tuesday in a statement.
The Nairobi-based agency said the tree planting campaign, inspired by Kenyan Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai, will help mitigate the effects of pollution and environmental deterioration.

Beach disputes study on racial bias in arrests
The most obvious flaw in the study, police said, is that all the figures are derived using the city's 1990 U.S. census racial breakdown of 10 percent black and about 86 percent white. By the 2000 census, Virginia Beach was 19 percent black and about 71 percent white. The black population in 2006 was estimated at about 20 percent of the total.
"If I’d turned a paper in grad school using data that was 18 years old, my professors would have said it was an invalid study," Cervera said. "The African American population has increased tremendously."
King acknowledged that not accounting for the increasing black population in Virginia Beach skewed the study toward showing that a higher percentage of blacks were arrested for drugs.
He said the main point of the study remained valid: Blacks still are being arrested more frequently on drug charges. "There are no studies of use, abuse or selling dynamics," he said, "that support the scope of disparity we see."

Negative images harm black youth, forum told
Black youth must gain a greater knowledge of the history of African civilization and the effects of colonialism and the slave trade before they can learn to reject some of the negative influences that enslave them today, says an award-winning history teacher.
David Watkins told the African Canadian Diaspora 2008 youth conference at the University of Windsor that when a community is only vaguely aware of its past, it becomes easy for negative assumptions to be foisted upon them.
He said many blacks are unaware of the history of Africa, running back hundreds to thousands of years to when Ethiopia and Zimbabwe were great empires and Africa was "the envied cradle of civilization," boasting the first universities, great religions and a proud people.
"The record companies say throw in some 'nigger, bitch and ho' and we'll take you on," he said. "Gangsta rap is bought 80 per cent by white male college students... It's a construct from outside our community... As educators, we need to deconstruct this mentality and show how we're being manipulated. We've got to replace it with the truth."
[ Whites stole the Black identity and achievements when really Whites were the backward people and Blacks invented civilization. He must hope that message will turn Blacks right around. ]

Marietta bar owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring a look-a-like of cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" underneath, are not meant to offend.
Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey.

'Scrappers' Cause Headaches for Military
Hundreds of Marines were conducting a combat training mission in the Mojave Desert when an air patrol spotted something kicking up dust: A civilian pickup truck speeding across the barren landscape. Behind the wheel was a suspected scrap metal thief who had been combing the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center for spent brass shell casings. His intrusion onto the base was the 12th time in six months that scavengers had inadvertently halted combat exercises.
Bombing ranges have become prime hunting grounds for so-called "scrappers," who are motivated by soaring commodity prices to take greater risks in their quest for brass, copper and aluminum. The scavenging causes headaches for the military, which cannot patrol every inch of the remote bases where spent ammunition, shrapnel and unexploded ordnance are easy to find.

On requiring every child to be above average.
Educational romanticism consists of the belief that just about all children who are not doing well in school have the potential to do much better. Correlatively, educational romantics believe that the academic achievement of children is determined mainly by the opportunities they receive; that innate intellectual limits (if they exist at all) play a minor role; and that the current K-12 schools have huge room for improvement.
Educational romanticism characterizes reformers of both Left and Right, though in different ways. Educational romantics of the Left focus on race, class, and gender. It is children of color, children of poor parents, and girls whose performance is artificially depressed, and their academic achievement will blossom as soon as they are liberated from the racism, classism, and sexism embedded in American education. Those of the Right see public education as an ineffectual monopoly, and think that educational achievement will blossom when school choice liberates children from politically correct curricula and obdurate teachers’ unions.
[ It's amazing that the outdated view persists that everyone who fails at school must have been environmentally disadvantaged somehow. ]

Attacker: "Look at the white boy, he looks like a victim,"
A Jacksonville high school student was recently beaten and battered at school by three students he said he didn't even know.
Witnesses to the attack told police Forrest High School sophomore Karl Koch Jr. was targeted because of the color of his skin.
According to the police report, one of the suspects said, "Look at the white boy, he looks like a victim," before punching Koch in the eye.
The report states all three attackers began kicking Koch and then laughed and ran away from the scene.

However, Tadic still lacks a clear majority to form a government. His opponent, Tomislav Nikolic, wants nationalist parties to join forces to govern.

Officer sacked for stopping black NYPD chief
Civil rights advocates said Sunday that a recent incident in which a high-ranking black police official was ordered out of his car by a white officer points out ongoing racial problems in the city's Police Department.
Granahan's father, Richard, blamed Zeigler for the incident. He told the Daily News for an article in Sunday's editions that Zeigler was parked at a hydrant in Corona, Queens, with the SUV's windows rolled up and the engine off.
The father said that Granahan's partner saw the driver fumble at his waistband and hollered, "Gun!" As Granahan grabbed the door handle, Zeigler stepped out and "smacked Michael's hand," Richard Granahan said.
Zeigler's wife, Neldra, is the NYPD's deputy commissioner for equal employment opportunity.

Earth losing its natural ability to soak up CO2?
Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii say that CO2 levels in the atmosphere now stand at 387 parts per million (ppm), up almost 40% since the industrial revolution and the highest for at least the last 650,000 years.
The annual mean growth rate for 2007 was 2.14ppm - the fourth year in the last six to see an annual rise greater than 2ppm. From 1970 to 2000, the concentration rose by about 1.5ppm each year, but since 2000 the annual rise has leapt to an average 2.1ppm.
Scientists say the shift could indicate that the Earth is losing its natural ability to soak up billions of tonnes of CO2 each year. Climate models assume that about half our future emissions will be reabsorbed by forests and oceans, but the new figures confirm this may be too optimistic.

Indiana Jones movie flatters nazis, backhandedly
Other than Indy's brief classroom scenes, the closest thing to authentic archaeology in the "Indiana Jones" flicks is done by the bad guys, whose elaborate, systematic digs in "Raiders" resemble actual excavations.
"Not a whole lot of what we know as archaeology goes on in these movies, except what the Nazis do. They seem to be doing some real archaeological work," said Walsh, who wrote the cover story in the May-June issue of Archaeology magazine examining the real history of crystal skulls featured in the new "Indiana Jones" movie.

I think that the themes of double-ness, lying and imposture have a special significance for me as an American Jewish writer. If Americans are self-made people who embrace an imagined future in order to escape the burdens of the past, American Jews seek to have their cake and eat it too by embracing the future-oriented American idea without
relinquishing their historically bound identity as Jews. While I don't think that the American and the Jewish identity principles are always necessarily opposed, I do think that keeping both ideas in one's head at one time can be the source of a tremendous amount of creative tension.
It is also inherently deceptive, in the sense that one is quite often signaling to others that one has agreed to dissolve one's particular heritage and historically bound point of view into a common Christian-inflected, highly individualistic and alienating, yet incredibly productive future-oriented social whole that most American Jews view with a high degree of distance and skepticism. The only real parallel for the ungracious refusal of large numbers of American Jews to buy into the full weirdness and wonder and scariness of the American idea is the experience and behavior of blacks --- whose situation is radically different because of the overt and inescapable historically-bound prejudice directed at the color of their skin. Blacks
can't dissolve themselves in the American melting pot, and so they often see the American idea as a open lie at the same time as they taste its sweet honey.
[ Blacks are not the most influential ethnicity in US politics. Jews admit that it is they. What is "the American idea" that the writer finds so weird? The American dream is the gospel of consumption - and Jews fit into that like a hand in a glove. ]

Einstein: Nothing 'chosen' about the Jews, Bible 'childish' legends
Albert Einstein, writing in 1954, dismissed Judaism and other religions as "an incarnation of the most childish superstitions," though he said he gladly belonged to the Jewish people and felt a deep affinity for the Jews' "mentality," excerpts published on Tuesday showed.
Einstein also said he saw nothing "chosen" about the Jews, and that they were no better than other peoples "although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power."
The renowned physicist, who died a little more than a year after writing the letter, also had tough words for God and the Bible, according to the text published by the British The Guardian daily.

Chavez slams Merkel as a "political descendant of Adolf Hitler"
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called German Chancellor Angela Merkel a political descendant of Adolf Hitler and German fascism.
The leftist leader, who famously called U.S. President George W. Bush "the devil" at a United Nations assembly, slammed Merkel for calling on Latin American leaders to distance themselves from Chavez.
"She is from the German right, the same that supported Hitler, that supported fascism, that's the Chancellor of Germany today," he said.

Russian bank hit by 'neo-Nazi ad' scandal
Bloggers are enraged by billboard advertisements for a bank in the Russian city of Ekaterinburg. They claim the ad has an encrypted message that glorifies Nazi ideology. Bank officials have called the scandal a plot by 'some outcasts' reports the Gazeta.ru news site.
The controversial ad is part of the bank's campaign timed to coincide with the Victory Day celebrations in Russia. It's offering a 14.88 per cent interest rate on deposits made by World War II veterans.
The 'encrypted neo-Nazi message', according to bloggers, is in that very number. Both 14 and 88 hold special meaning for neo-Nazis: 14 is the number of words in a slogan authored by notorious white nationalist leader and ideologist David Lane, while 88 stands for the Nazi salute 'Heil Hitler' as 'H' is the eighth letter of the alphabet.
The bank's management reject all accusations and say the outrage stems from 'pervert outcasts, roaming around in search for hidden symbols and made public by irresponsible people who spread such stories.'

Growing gap between rich and poor in Israel - while ethnicity becomes less important
The Sephardi-Ashkenazi fissure is blurring, a prey to intermarriage, social mobility, and to the distance in time from countries of origin and their culture. Young Israelis do not carry their "ethnicity" in the forefront of their consciousness. Their Israeliness, however defined, is steadily taking precedence.
The Russians - and there have been more than a million migrants in the past 20 years from the former Soviet Union - are on the make, with the classic profile of the Jewish migrant: determined, hard-working and studious. There are enough of them to sustain a flourishing culture - attracting a new respect from other Israelis.
Such confident multiculturalism helps explain an easing in the perennial Orthodox-secular strains in Israeli society. The downside is the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots. Bibi had hacked away at the welfare state with a vigour that made Thatcherites pale. Many economists say he saved the country. But a million or more poor Israelis have yet to feel the promised trickle-down effect, while the super-rich soar into the stratosphere. Silver-tongued Bibi may bamboozle with a bridge of words. But the chasm between rich and poor yawns dark and menacing.

Mbeki clings on
Thabo Mbeki has just survived an attempt to sack him as president of South Africa. This occurred at last weekend's summit of the tripartite alliance - the ANC, the Communist Party (SACP) and the biggest trade union group, Cosatu, where the motion for Mbeki to go was put by the SACP. At the end of the summit the leaders of the three organisations appeared together to insist that Mbeki would in fact be staying on but the fact that his dismissal could be openly discussed and debated shows how completely his presidency has collapsed.
ANC and alliance leaders have many grievances against Mbeki - his policies over Zimbabwe and Aids have brought nothing but disaster and lack of international credibility; the onset of regular power cuts has ruined hopes of high economic growth and put many jobs at risk; unemployment and inequality remain stubbornly high; the government's failure to stem the crime wave is complete and Mbeki is now revealed as having tried unconstitutionally to prevent the public prosecutor from bringing proceedings against the police chief, Jackie Selebi, Mbeki's crony - a matter about which Mbeki had very publicly lied.
[ We are yet to see a modern African leader who is not corrupt and can rule effectively. Not that such leaders are in abundance anywhere in the world. Africa's "big man" culture, of respecting brutality and ostentatious wealth, doesn't help. ]

Westerners working more for less reward
Across Spain, France and Italy, young middle-class professionals with good degrees and diplomas are facing a lifetime on low salaries with unrewarding jobs, forever poorer than their parents.
According to Chauvel, 41, a sociologist at the National Foundation for Political Science, for the first time in recent history a generation of French citizens aged between 20 and 40 can expect a lower standard of living than the one before. 'Mileuristas or babylosers: it's the same story,' he said. 'They have an average of three years more education than their parents, a worse job and a lower standard of living.'
In 1973, only 6 per cent of recent university leavers in France were unemployed; now the rate is 25 to 30 per cent; salaries have stagnated for 20 years while property prices have doubled or trebled, though the overall proportion of French people living in poverty has not changed. Whereas in the 1960s the poor were mainly the old, now they are the young; in 1970, salaries for 50-year-olds were only 15 per cent higher than those for workers of 30; the gap now is 40 per cent.
[ The situation is the same over western Europe and the US. And they we are working for the 1% of the population who own 40% of the wealth of the world. This is exploitation. ]

Peak civilization
We - and by this I mean people throughout the industrial world - have to make the transition to a Third World lifestyle. There's no way to sugar-coat that very unpalatable reality. Fossil fuels made it possible for most people in the industrial world to have a lifestyle that doesn't depend on hard physical labor, and to wallow in a flood of mostly unnecessary consumer goods and services. As fossil fuels deplete, all that will inevitably go away. How many people would be willing to listen to such a suggestion? More to the point, how many people would vote for a politician or a party who proposed to bring on these changes deliberately, now, in order to prevent total disaster later on?
John Kenneth Galbraith has written a brilliant, mordant book, The Culture of Contentment, about the reasons why America is incapable of constructive change. He compares today's American political class (those people who vote and involve themselves in politics) to the French aristocracy before the Revolution. Everybody knew that the situation was insupportable, and that eventually there would be an explosion, but the immediate costs of doing something about it were so unpalatable that everyone decided to do nothing and hope that things would somehow work out. We're in exactly the same situation here and now.
So while it may be appealing to fantasize about vast government programs bailing us out of the present predicament, such fantasies are not a practical way of responding to the situation. We have to start with the recognition that the most likely outcome of the current situation is collapse: to borrow the Club of Rome's formulation, sustained, simultaneous, uncontrolled and irreversible declines in population, industrial production, and capital stock.

China's Unwelcome Advances
Some non-governmental organisations worry that Chinese firms will ignore basic legal, environmental and labour standards in their rush to secure resources, leaving a trail of corruption, pollution and exploitation in their wake. Western companies fret that the Chinese state-owned firms with which they suddenly find themselves competing have an agenda beyond commercial gain. The Chinese government, they say, is willing to pay over the odds for mining or drilling rights to secure access to physical resources. It also intervenes unfairly on its companies' behalf, they claim, by offering big aid packages to countries that welcome Chinese investment. All this, it is feared, will dent the profits of big oil and mining firms, stoke inflation and imperil the West's access to resources that it needs just as much as China does.
Diplomats and pundits, for their part, fear that the West is "losing" Africa and other resource-rich regions. China's sudden prominence, according to this view, will reduce the clout of America, Europe and other rich democracies in the developing world. China will befriend ostracised regimes and encourage them to defy international norms. Corruption, economic mismanagement, repression and instability will proliferate. If this baleful influence spreads too widely, say the critics, the "Washington consensus" of economic liberalism and democracy will find itself in competition with a "Beijing consensus" of state-led development and despotism.
[ Surely the competition exists right now! And Washington is hardly going to just stand by and have the US replaced as a superpower by China. ]

Swedish politician acquitted of hate speech charges
A local politician from the Malmo suburb of Burlov has been acquitted of charges of agitation against an ethnic group.
The legislative motion dealt primarily with homelessness in Burlov and the appeals court ruled the motion was written so poorly that its aim was rendered unintelligible.
Instead, the court attempted to interpreted what Pettersson meant.
According to the Court of Appeals, the text of the proposal could be read as saying that Kosovo Albanians are especially inclined to be involved with the heroin trade and therefore cause homelessness and other societal problems.
Ultimately, the court choose to release Pettersson, arguing that freedom of expression and the right to criticize current policy is important, especially when it comes to political debate.

How the world's oceans are running out of fish
One old lady asks me what I'm after. 'I want to know why the Spanish are eating so many undersized fish from populations that are running out,' I say. 'It's simple,' she says. 'We like fish and small fish taste better.'
Is anyone not aware that wild fish are in deep trouble? That three-quarters of commercially caught species are over-exploited or exploited to their maximum? Do they not know that industrial fishing is so inefficient that a third of the catch, some 32 million tonnes a year, is thrown away? For every ocean prawn you eat, fish weighing 10-20 times as much have been thrown overboard. These figures all come from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which also claims that, of all the world's natural resources, fish are being depleted the fastest. With even the most abundant commercial species, we eat smaller and smaller fish every year - we eat the babies before they can breed.
Callum Roberts, professor of marine conservation at York University, predicts that by 2050 we will only be able to meet the fish protein needs of half the world population: all that will be left for the unlucky half may be, as he puts it, 'jellyfish and slime'. Ninety years of industrial-scale exploitation of fish has, he and most scientists agree, led to 'ecological meltdown'. Whole biological food chains have been destroyed.

Indian "green revolutionary" aims to solve global food crisis
The 82-year-old scientist, dubbed here the father of the Green Revolution for helping development a hybrid wheat seed that allowed Indian farmers to dramatically increase yields, says the current food crisis offers the world a chance to put farmers on the right road to unending growth.
In the twenty-first century's "Evergreen Revolution", as he calls it, conservation farming and green technology will bring about sustainable change that could allow India to become an even bigger supplier of food to the world.
With genetically advanced seeds, farmers overlooked the potential ecological damage of heavy fertiliser use, the drop in water tables due to heavier irrigation and the impact of repeated crop cycles on soil quality.
He believes we've learned from those lessons, and the next wave of improvements will have environmental considerations at their core, without the need to return to the genetics lab.

Gas prices knock bicycle sales, repairs into higher gear
Four-dollar-a-gallon gas is good for business if you run a bike shop.
Commuters around the country are dusting off their old two-wheelers or buying new ones to cope with rising fuel prices, bicycle dealers say.
"Everyone that comes in the shop is talking about the gas prices," said Barry Dahl, who opened Barry's Bikes in Bismarck in April. He sold more than 50 bicycles in the first month, double the projections in his business plan.
Teacher Joyce McCusker of Herndon, Va., owns a bicycle for the first time in years. She bought it last month and uses it to make the eight-mile trip home from work. A friend drives her pickup to take McCusker's daughter home from school.

Prince Philip criticises global overpopulation
"Food prices are going up," he tells his interviewer, Sir Trevor McDonald. "Everyone thinks it's to do with not enough food, but it's really that demand is too great too many people. Basically, it's a little embarrassing for everybody. No one quite knows how to handle it. Nobody wants their family life to be interfered with by the government."
Whether Philip, who has four children with the Queen and eight grandchildren, is contemplating a Chinese-style one-child policy for Britain or other, more radical ideas, remains unknown.
"You've got to be fairly hard-hearted about it. Conservation is not a romantic business. It's a very practical business, trying to ensure as many different species of wildlife can exist, and which means in some cases controlling some so the others can have a better chance."

Iraqi kills his daughter over (unreciprocated) crush on British soldier
Two weeks ago, The Observer revealed how 17-year-old student Rand Abdel-Qader was beaten to death by her father after becoming infatuated with a British soldier in Basra. In this remarkable interview, Abdel-Qader Ali explains why he is unrepentant - and how police backed his actions.
'Death was the least she deserved,' said Abdel-Qader. 'I don't regret it. I had the support of all my friends who are fathers, like me, and know what she did was unacceptable to any Muslim that honours his religion,' he said.
The mother is now trying to raise enough money to escape abroad. 'I miss my two boys,' she said. 'But they have sent a message saying that I am wrong for defending Rand and that I should go back home and live like a blessed Muslim woman,' said Leila, who is now volunteering with a local organisation campaigning for better protection for women in Basra.
[ Miscegenation is a bad thing, and parents should take an extremely intolerant stance against it, however the Muslims often take things too far. They kill their daughters for falling in love with a Muslim of a different sect, and they would accept this British man as being one of them if he had converted to their own sect. Pesticide DDT shows up in Antarctic penguins
The pesticide DDT, banned decades ago in much of the world, still shows up in penguins in Antarctica, probably due to the chemical's accumulation in melting glaciers, a sea bird expert said on Friday.
Adelie penguins, known for their waddling gait and a habit of nesting on stones, have long shown evidence of DDT in their fatty tissues, although not in enough concentration to hurt the birds, according to Heidi Geisz of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
But researchers were surprised to see that the level of the pesticide in Adelies' fat had not declined, even after DDT was banned for exterior use in the 1970s in the United States and elsewhere.

1.5 Million Chinese Children Take Part in Painting Competition on Climate Change
Winners will be announced on World Environment Day on 5 June
Nairobi, 8 May 2008 - An unprecedented 1.5 million Chinese children have participated in a painting competition on the topic of climate change, in a sign of the country's growing awareness of environmental issues.
The competition, held in China for the first time, saw the children collectively submit 200,000 paintings on the theme of climate change. Some 620 paintings were selected for prizes by the jury, which was made up of renowned Chinese artists, UNEP officials and Ms Elizabeth Rihoy of Resource Africa.
The top three winners will be announced on 5 June for World Environment Day alongside the winners of UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition. As a reward for their artistry, the talented trio will participate in the UNEP Tunza International Children's Conference in Stavanger, Norway on 17-21 June 2008.
In July, the top 20 winners will be invited to Nairobi to receive their prizes from UNEP's Executive Director, Mr. Achim Steiner and to participate in children's community activities in Kenya.
This is the first time the Children's Painting Competition was held in China, in conjunction with UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition which takes place every year. The competition - sponsored by Mr. Luo Hong, a Chinese businessman, environmentalist and photographer - aimed to raise awareness on climate change issues among China's young people and the Chinese public in general.

Russia puts on an arms parade to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany
For the first time since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moscow has put on an arms parade to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany. Russians are impressed with the military show of strength, but in Eastern Europe the parade has reawakened old fears.
In the days running up to the parade, things in Moscow looked a bit strange. Tanks rolled down the streets in the direction of Red Square while fighter jets flew over the office blocks in the heart of the Russian capital. To Western observers, these scenes were anachronistic. If it weren’t for the hundreds of billboards and luxury boutiques, it would almost seem as if things had jumped back in time to the Soviet Union in 1990.

Oslo rape stats show non-westerners prone to rape
Two out of three charged with rape in Norway's capital are immigrants with a non-western background according to a police study. The number of rape cases is also rising steadily.The study is the first where the crime statistics have been analyzed according to ethnic origin. Of the 111 charged with rape in Oslo last year, 72 were of non-western ethnic origin, 25 are classified as Norwegian or western and 14 are listed as unknown.
Rape charges in the capital are spiraling upwards, 40 percent higher from 1999 to 2000 and up 13 percent so far this year.
Nine out of ten cases do not make it to prosecution, most of them because police do not believe the evidence is sufficient to reach a conviction.
Police Inspector Gunnar Larsen of Oslo's Vice, Robbery and Violent crime division says the statistics are surprising - the rising number of rape cases and the link to ethnic background are both clear trends. But Larsen does not want to speculate on the reasons behind the worrying developments.
While 65 percent of those charged with rape are classed as coming from a non-western background, this segment makes up only 14.3 percent of Oslo's population. Norwegian women were the victims in 80 percent of the cases, with 20 percent being women of foreign background.

Border fence is a "racist thing," says Brownsville mayor
Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, one of the architects of the border wall project between Mexico and Texas, drew boos from residents in Brownsville, Texas, at a public meeting on the subject this week.
"If you don't like the fence... between the city and Mexico, I suggest that you build the fence around the northern part of the city," fired off Tancredo when opponents to the fence made their displeasure heard at the meeting.
Brownsville Mayor Pat Ahumada called the Congressman a bigot, and said that the border wall project was a "racist thing."
"They're afraid of us Mexicans taking over politically, I think," he said in a television interview.

Hillary Clinton's shocking racist rhetoric
In case you didn't get what was behind that exchange, Mrs. Clinton spent this week making it clear. In a jaw-dropping interview in USA Today on Thursday, she said, "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on." As evidence she cited an Associated Press report that, she said, "found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."
White Americans? Hard-working white Americans? "Even Richard Nixon didn't say white," an Obama supporter said, "even with the Southern strategy."
If John McCain said, "I got the white vote, baby!" his candidacy would be over. And rising in highest indignation against him would be the old Democratic Party.
To play the race card as Mrs. Clinton has, to highlight and encourage a sense that we are crudely divided as a nation, to make your argument a brute and cynical "the black guy can't win but the white girl can" is -- well, so vulgar, so cynical, so cold, that once again a Clinton is making us turn off the television in case the children walk by.

School On Lockdown After 600 Fight
Four people were arrested and a school went on lockdown after a fight between black and Hispanic students raged, according to authorities.
Police were sent to Locke High School shortly after 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
The fight allegedly involved some 600 students.
Some minor injuries were also report. The extent of those injuries was not known but a fire department official said no one was transported to the hospital.

Al-Qaeda wants to see the destruction of Iran
Al-Qaeda's number two leader snubbed US Republican Senator John McCain for claiming that Iran is working with the terrorist organization.
During a new online Q&A session, Ayman al-Zawahiri said al-Qaeda wants to see the destruction of Iran - a Shiite nation battling the terrorists.
"We hope that war 'saps' both Washington and Tehran," he said according to a press tv report.
"The dispute between America and Iran is a genuine struggle, and the possibility of the US striking Iran is real," al-Zawahiri said.

Pesticide killing hundreds of thousands of German bees?
Bees in the German state of Baden-WĂĽrttemburg are dying by the hundreds of thousands. In some places more than half of hives have perished. Government officials say the causes are unclear -- but beekeepers are blaming new pesticides.
"Fifty to 60 percent of the bees have died on average, and some beekeepers have lost all their hives."
Meanwhile, Germany's beekeepers were pointing fingers at one of Germany's largest companies, blaming a popular, recently-introduced pesticide called clothianidin for the recent die-off. Produced by Monheim-based Bayer CropScience, a subsidiary of German chemical giant Bayer AG, clothianidin is sold in Europe under the trade name Poncho. It's designed to attack the nervous systems of insects "like nerve gas," says Hederer. The chemical was used last year to fight an outbreak of corn rootworm, and its success against the pest led to a much wider application this spring up and down the Rhine.

Jewish Super-Delegates Could Swing Vote Towards Hilary
According to a new survey conducted by the Forward, a disproportionately large share of the Democratic party's super-delegates are Jewish. Many of them have declared their support for Hillary Clinton, accounting for more than 15% of her current backers.
"Politics in America has become a Jewish profession, just like arts and the law," said Ira Forman, executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council and the author of a book about Jews and American politics. "We now are overrepresented in all these areas."
The relatively high number of Jews among super-delegates highlights a larger political shift that has occurred in recent decades, according to Forman. Although Jews have always been well represented on the American left, he said, historically they have tended to gravitate toward causes, such as the labor and civil rights movements, rather than active participation in party politics.

Washington silent on manhandling of US general by Israelis
The American bodyguards of a Bush administration envoy who was dispatched to the region to monitor the implementation of the road map engaged in a violent confrontation with right-wing Israelis who sought to disturb a visit to Hebron on Friday, Israel Radio reported. One of the rightists is reported to have driven his jeep into the convoy accompanying General William Fraser. Subsequently, one of the vehicles in the convoy heavily collided with the jeep, according to Israel Radio. A fracas ensued between the guards and the rightists before the Americans decided to cut the visit short, Israel Radio reported.
It is amazing that a three star general appointed by the US president is physically harassed and denied to do his job by citizens of a country that America has a special relationship with. Until this writing, neither the state department nor the white house have even made a public statement about the incident. IF Washington is silent about the fact that one of its generals whose mission is to monitor the parties commitments is being pushed around by Israelis how can we ever expect this American military envoy or the US government to actually publicly point the finger at the side that is violating the agreement, especially if that side is the Israeli side?

Corporate spying on dissident political groups
WHILE the Patriot Act has raised fears about government spying on ordinary citizens, the growing threat to civil liberties posed by corporate spying has received much less attention. During the late 1990s, a private security firm spied on Greenpeace and other environmental groups, examining activists’ phone records and even sending undercover agents to infiltrate the groups, according to an article in Mother Jones. In 2006 Hewlett-Packard was caught spying on journalists. Last year Wal-Mart apologized for improperly recording conversations with a New York Times reporter.
And now it turns out that the Burger King Corporation, home of the Whopper, hired a private security firm to spy on the Student/Farmworker Alliance, a group of idealistic college students trying to improve the lives of migrants in Florida.

Bees are disappearing fast in US - 32% loss in commercial hives
A survey of bee health released Tuesday revealed a grim picture, with 36.1 percent of the nation's commercially managed hives lost since last year.
Last year's survey commissioned by the Apiary Inspectors of America found losses of about 32 percent.
As beekeepers travel with their hives this spring to pollinate crops around the country, it's clear the insects are buckling under the weight of new diseases, pesticide drift and old enemies like the parasitic varroa mite, said Dennis vanEngelsdorp, president of the group.

U.S. economic anxiety hits women harder: study
The U.S. economic downturn has spread personal financial worries far and wide, but women are more worried about paying bills, losing jobs, providing for children and saving for retirement, according to a study released on Thursday.
The study comes as the U.S. economy has been mired in a half-year-long period of stagnation accompanied by a shrinking job market, rising energy prices and a downward spiral in consumer confidence.
The report said women, particularly among minorities, have more financial worries than men. It was based on a survey commissioned in February 2007 by the Rockefeller Foundation and an analysis by the Institute for Women's Policy Research.

Large number of immigrants poses challenge for schools in Helsinki suburbs
The number of pupils of immigrant origin is increasing constantly in schools in the suburbs of Helsinki.
Next autumn, as many as 50 out of 60 pupils starting the seventh grade at the Myllypuro comprehensive school will speak a language other than Finnish as their mother-tongue.
"This is the last moment to realise that the schools in Eastern Helsinki are in a special position", says Anneli Luotonen, the principal of the Myllypuro lower secondary school.
"Teaching alone is not enough to handle all the challenges the school is facing", Luotonen adds.

Intellectuals' poisoned congratulations on Israel's 60th anniversary
The paper "Congratulations and Concerns" was preceded by another position statement: "Friendship and Criticism," written by 25 political scientists who accuse Israel of instrumentalizing the Holocaust for its own political ends and who call for a rethink of the "special relationship" between Germany and Israel in order to render the "internal German discourse" between "non-Jewish, Jewish and Muslim Germans" broader and more impartial.
Meanwhile, there is hardly any well-known writer who has not made some kind of statement about Israel. Jostein Gaarder, the Norwegian author of the bestseller "Sophie's World," wrote Israel out of the pages of history with the words: "We no longer recognize the State of Israel." Gore Vidal, the American author who lives in self-imposed exile in Italy, South Africa's Breyten Breytenbach and the Portuguese author Jose Saramago have all also expressed their opinions, with latter comparing the situation in Ramallah to Auschwitz. When asked where the gas chambers were, he reportedly replied: "There are no gas chambers, yet."
Significant parts of the German intelligentsia see it as their task to watch day and night to make sure that the Jews (in other words, Israelis) do not backslide and do not gamble away the moral credit that they gained by being the victim of the Nazis.

Is Cheap Meat Bigger Threat to Amazon than Biofuels?
Development politicians fear that the demand on land to grow biofuels is diminishing agricultural production and, as a result, continuing to drive food prices ever higher. Environmental groups, such as Greenpeace Germany, say that although the expansion of sugar cane cultivation is taking place far away from the rainforest, it could still drive soya
production and animal farming into ecologically sensitive areas. On top of that, scientists have calculated bioethanol produces more of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide than normal gas.
According to Silva, at the moment only 1 percent of the country is planted with sugar cane -- so it cannot possibly be competing with food production.
However, the German environment minister sees doesn't see biofuels as posing the greatest danger to the rainforest. He'd much rather that Germans came to an uncomfortable realization: the big problem concerns the soya that Europe imports as animal feed, and the subsidies that support European farmers. "German farmers are profiting from the logging
of the rainforest much more than Brazilians," Gabriel said. He argues that German society must take a hard look at its meat consumption.

Israeli battles rage on Wikipedia
The conflict in the Middle East has spread to the internet with Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups using Wikipedia, the electronic encyclopedia, to push their message.
The pro-Israel group, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (Camera) has called for volunteers to edit entries that display notable bias on the site.
A Palestinian aggregator, Electronic Intifada, has exposed the initiative, which it claims was to be a secretive attempt to subvert the spirit of the site.
"Wikipedia, the hugely popular online encyclopedia site, can be edited by anyone," an email purportedly circulated by Camera said.

Price of picking up Mexican illegal immigrant trash is over $1m a year
The latest battle in the war on illegal immigration isn't over the smuggling of undocumented workers, it's over the trash they leave behind.
Government officials and border activists say the garbage dumped in the desert by illegal immigrants and their smugglers is staggering.
And the cleanup is costing taxpayers millions.
In 2006 alone, more than 1.18 million pounds of trash was collected along southern Arizona border, many in the meeting spots where immigrants rest, change clothes and wait to hitch a ride further north with a smuggler.

Italian Rightist horrified by burning Israeli flags
Gianfranco Fini, the president of the Italian Parliament, is facing a firestorm of controversy after saying that the May 1 burning of Israeli flags in Turin by far-left protesters was "much more serious" than the savage beating of a 29-year-old that same day in Verona by a neo-Nazi gang. The victim of the beating, Nicola Tommasoli, died late Monday after several days in a coma. Five young fans of the Verona soccer team have been arrested for the murder.
To fulfill his big ambitions, Fini understood in the early 1990s that he had to distance himself from his past. Eventually, he came to believe that the shortest path from marginal Mussolini nostalgic to mainstream political power was unwavering support for the state of Israel.

Idaho student says teacher tossed his Mexican flag in trash
A high school student says he may file a lawsuit against a physical education teacher who took a Mexican flag he had brought for Cinco de Mayo and put it in the garbage.
Straatman denied saying the words Camelo attributed to him, and said the student may have misunderstood him because of his poor English skills. He said he took the flag from Camelo after Camelo had been waving it in the school gym, and denied withholding it later.
"I had to confiscate it so it wouldn't escalate any problems in class," Straatman told The Times-News. "We're worried about that stuff all the time. We always have kids saying stuff to each other, and we have a lot of fights between kids."

Bill would punish nations that reject own emigrants
The United States is facing a major obstacle in its efforts to deport thousands of illegal immigrants, including many convicted felons: Their home countries don't want them back.
This does not sit well with Sen. Arlen Specter, a veteran lawmaker and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Specter, R-Pa., was stunned by the situation after touring several prisons in his home state where taxpayer dollars are spent to house foreigners who have served their sentences but could not be deported. In response, he drafted legislation that would punish countries that refuse to take back illegal immigrants.

Israel says it may go it alone against Iran
In a Friday interview with the Yediot Aharonot, senior Israeli minister Ehud Barak made his newest accusations against Iran, claiming that Tehran is attempting to develop a nuclear bomb in two years.
"It's possible that it may take another two years, maybe four ...it's all the same if international pressure and other possibilities don't stop the process," claimed the official.
Barak then threatened Iran, suggesting that Israel is fully prepared to launch a military attack on Tehran but refrained to elaborate on the subject.

Sharp rise in San Francisco jails' black population
As San Francisco's population of African American residents has decreased in recent years, the population of black men and women locked up in the San Francisco County Jail has increased dramatically, Sheriff Michael Hennessey said.
More than 60 percent of all prisoners are African American, according to a survey of the city jail's population. And of the 282 female prisoners, 67 percent are black.
A similar study in 1996 found that half of the jail population was African American. A 2005 study put the number at 53 percent.
In contrast, 6.7 percent of San Francisco residents are black - a number that has been in steady decline, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

US crime rate drops while rate of incarceration grows.
America has the world's largest prison population. It's not exactly news these days to mention this fact. After all, largely because of the way in which the war on drugs has played out here, the country long ago out-incarcerated Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa and all the other traditionally high-imprisonment countries. But a new report out by the London-based International Centre for Prison Studies explores just how extraordinary the numbers really are.
By 2001, after eight years of falling crime rates, it had risen to 685; three years later to 723; and now to 751. And this rise is occurring not during a period when the public is listing crime as a top concern, as it was in the mid-1990s, but rather during years in which few people list fear of crime as their top concern.

UN peacekeepers may be trading guns for ivory
Allegations have circulated - and been denied - that in 2004 and 2005 peacekeepers from India and Pakistan were trading guns and ammunition with the rebels for ivory and gold. In one case, peacekeepers even reportedly flew a UN helicopter out to swap ammunition for ivory.
"The concern is that this news is filtering through to the well-armed groups in the area who now see an opportunity to raise funds by killing elephants for ivory," said the Nairobi-based organisation WildlifeDirect, which announced the elephant killings.

Population growth in Helsinki has been based on immigrants from abroad.
Last year alone, nearly 6,500 people moved into the Finnish capital from foreign countries, with around half of the immigrants coming from other EU countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, and France.
"The relative share of migrants from Western Europe has increased rapidly", notes senior statistician Pekka Vuori from the City of Helsinki's Urban Facts unit.
No research findings exist relating to the reasons for the population growth, but one of the factors contributing to the population gain could be the fact that the demand for workforce at Finland-based foreign companies continues to grow, reports Vuori.

Sweden is the world's best country in which to be a mother, according to a new report published by Save the Children.
The rankings are based on a compilation of several indicators including female life expectancy, maternity leave benefits, access to safe water, women's participation in government, and the mortality rate of children under five.
"Many children in Swedenâ€"not least children to single mothersâ€"grow up in economic hardship, and there are children who witness daily violence in the home, or are subjected to violence or attacks…there is still a lot to do, even in a country like Sweden," said Svedling.
[ And a previous report said Sweden's the best place to be a baby - which logically follows. But Swedes are rapidly having their culture replaced by immigrants from lands where it is worst to be. ]

Scientists: Warming may greatest threat to tropical species
While global warming is expected to be strongest at the poles, it may be an even greater threat to species living in the tropics, scientists say.
Tropical species are accustomed to living in a small temperature range and thus may be unable to cope with changes of even a few degrees, according to an analysis in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Anti-Semitic incidents rise in Germany, Australia, U.S. in 2007
The annual global report on anti-Semitism being presented to the cabinet Sunday morning points to a rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, Australia, the United States and Ukraine together with an overall decrease in Western Europe. The largest number of incidents were recorded in Britain, followed by France.

Poll: Most Germans say country has no special ties with Israel
Most Germans feel that their country has no particular responsibility over Israel's welfare, so reveals a comprehensive poll conducted recently by the German television network ZDF.
The poll, published Friday, showed that only 40 percent of the participants said that, in light of the two countries' history, Germany has a special responsibility toward Israel.
Of those polled, 53 percent said there was no such responsibility. The poll included some 1,230 participants.
"The poll show that there is a disparity between the general stance of the political leadership and the views of the German public," said Ilan Mor, an Israeli envoy in Germany, after the televised presentation of the results.

The Israeli envoy's remarks suggest that he feels that either the government should fall in line with the German people's views, or that the people need to be convinced to fall in line with the government. Israeli skinhead nazis convicted of racial attacks
Two members of a youth-led neo-Nazi cell that had been operating in Petah Tikvah were convicted on Monday at the Tel Aviv District Court.
The group's leader, Arik Bunyatov, 20, and a minor from Holon were convicted of a string of racially-motivated violent crimes.
According to the material on their computers, the suspects also planned to celebrate Adolf Hitler's birthday at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum and memorial.

Neanderthals were separate species, new study finds
A new, simplified family tree of humanity has dealt a blow to those who contend that the enigmatic hominids known as Neanderthals intermingled with our forebears.
Neanderthals were a separate species to Homo sapiens, as anatomically modern humans are known, rather than offshoots of the same species, the new organigram published Sunday by the journal Nature declares.
Some opinions aver that the Neanderthals were slowly wiped out by the smarter H. sapiens in the competition for resources.
Other contend that we and the Neanderthals were more than just kissing cousins. Interbreeding took place, which explains why the Neanderthal line died out, but implies that we could have Neanderthal inheritage in our genome today, goes this theory.

The Philippine government has openly embraced the commercial growing of genetically modified (GM) corn, but neighbouring countries appear less than enthusiastic.

Australia needs years of heavy rainfall to crack drought
Australia will need several years of heavy rainfall to reverse the devastating effects of a drought that has battered farm production, the Bureau of Meteorology said in a report received Monday.
The report came despite months of drenching rains spawned by the La Nina weather phenomenon in the agricultural east of the country that sparked optimism that the worst drought in 100 years might at last be over.

Earth is losing dirt at an alarming rate
"We're losing more and more of it every day," said David Montgomery, a geologist at the University of Washington. "The estimate is that we are now losing about 1 percent of our topsoil every year to erosion, most of this caused by agriculture."
"It's just crazy," fumed John Aeschliman, a fifth-generation farmer who grows wheat and other grains on the Palouse near the tiny town of Almota, just west of Pullman.
"We're tearing up the soil and watching tons of it wash away every year," Aeschliman said. He's one of a growing number of farmers trying to convince others to adopt "no-till" methods, which involve no tilling of the land between plantings, leaving crop stubble to reduce erosion and planting new seeds between the stubble rows. Montgomery has written a popular book, "Dirt," to call public attention to what he believes is a neglected environmental catastrophe. A geomorphologist who studies how landscapes form, Montgomery describes modern agricultural practices as "soil mining" to emphasize that we are rapidly outstripping the Earth's natural rate of restoring topsoil. "Globally, it's clear we are eroding soils at a rate much faster than they can form," said John Reganold, a soils scientist at Washington State University. "It's hard to get people to pay much attention to this because, frankly, most of us take soil for granted."

Rome's new mayor promises purge of migrants
The new mayor of Rome has promised to purge the Italian capital of 20,000 illegal immigrants and to raze 85 gipsy camps.
Gianni Alemanno, 50, a firebrand neo-fascist and the first Right-wing mayor of the city since the Second World War, vowed to make Rome "secure" as he was sworn into office after his election at the weekend.
The election of Mr Alemanno confirmed a strong shift to the Right by Italians, who have been sickened by a spate of violent crimes committed by immigrants.
Earlier this month, the centre-Right leader Silvio Berlusconi was re-elected as prime minister and will form a government in partnership with Umberto Bossi, the leader of the anti-immigration Northern League.

Ex-Iraq commander accuses Bush Administration of 'gross incompetence'
In a new memoir set to be published May 6, the former commander of US forces in Iraq provides new intimate details of the goings-on at high levels of the Bush Administration in the first year of the Iraq war.
His sharp tongued conclusion: "Hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars were unnecessarily spent, and worse yet, too many of our most precious military resource, our American soldiers, were unnecessarily wounded, maimed, and killed as a result. In my mind, this action by the Bush administration amounts to gross incompetence and dereliction of duty."

Debate on whether to obscure Israeli archeological discoveries that are inconvenient
The dispute centered on whether Barnard College should grant tenure to Nadia Abu El-Haj, an American-born scholar of anthropology who, in the 1990s, challenged the scientific integrity of what she saw as the Israeli use of archeology in a politically motivated way to justify Jewish settlements on territory that had belonged to Palestinians.
Although the controversy wasn’t new " it had been argued out within archeological circles in Israel for years " El-Haj became a lightning rod because she was the first academic of Palestinian descent to publicize the debate in a 2001 book, Facts on the Ground: Archeological Practice and Territorial Self-Fashioning in Israeli Society.
This pattern of ugly controversies whenever a Muslim or an Arab-American criticizes Israel or is seen as promoting some Islamic agenda has become more and more common, with influential neoconservative groups now operating in a concerted way to destroy careers and livelihoods.

Jesse Jackson urges Haiti debt relief
U.S. civil rights leader Jesse Jackson called for urgent debt relief for Haiti on Tuesday to ease the burden of a food crisis that sparked violent protests in the impoverished Caribbean nation earlier this month.
Jackson said Haiti owed the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank about $1.5 billion, with debt service payments reaching some $70 million a year.
"We want this debt canceled and the people relieved of its burden," Jackson told a news conference at the presidential palace following a meeting with President Rene Preval.

Brooklyn elementary school hit with 'Jump White People' graffiti
Disturbing, gang-like graffiti is cropping up all over a Brooklyn elementary school, marring a playground, classrooms and two teachers' cars, authorities said.
The troubling words "Jump White People" and abbreviation "JWP" have appeared at Public School 224 in East New York about a dozen times in the past three weeks, and some teachers are concerned that it's not being taken seriously.
"It just quietly gets erased," one teacher said. "Nothing gets done."

Zimbabwe farm invasions and attacks spread
Zimbabwe's farm invasions are spreading to the western half of the country, with a white landowner attacked and shot at north of Bulawayo.
The assault on Wayne Munro happened only a few miles from where Martin Olds, the first farmer murdered when Robert Mugabe first unleashed the mobs in 2000, was killed.
Mr Munro and his family, including his bed-ridden grandfather, are under siege from around 200 so-called "war veterans" at his property in Nyamandhlovu.

Anti Iran rhetoric on holocaust remembrance day
Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi said Thursday that on this Holocaust Remembrance Day, Israel takes very seriously the calls for its destruction.
Ashkenazi addressed 12,000 people at the March of the Living ceremony in the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, saying "in these days, as we celebrate 60 years of independence, the fact that an independent Jewish state exists is not something to be taken for granted. Even today, we hear the horrible sounds of those who call for the destruction of the state of Israel. Even today we are forced to continue and fight for our right to have a national home in a safe place for the Jewish people in their own land. High Incarceration Rate Of Blacks Is Function Of Crime, Not Racism
The race industry and its elite enablers take it as self-evident that high black incarceration rates result from discrimination.
At a presidential primary debate this Martin Luther King Day, for instance, Sen. Barack Obama charged that blacks and whites "are arrested at very different rates, are convicted at very different rates, (and) receive very different sentences . . . for the same crime."
The black incarceration rate is overwhelmingly a function of black crime. Insisting otherwise only worsens black alienation and further defers a real solution to the black crime problem.
Racial activists usually remain silent about that problem. But in 2005, the black homicide rate was more than seven times higher than that of whites and Hispanics combined, according to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics.

John McCain admits Iraq War was over oil

Think about how amazing this is. McCain is essentially saying that our quest to "spread democracy" throughout the Middle East is a sham. Too scared for school: the plight of Zimbabwe's teachers
Hundreds of rural schools are struggling to reopen at all after teachers fled a campaign of violence against local activists for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and officers for the Zimbabwe election commission. Thousands of teachers took employment as election officers during the school break to supplement their shrinking incomes. In the past week at least 100 teachers, including several school principals, have been arrested on suspicion of electoral fraud.
The main trade union federation announced yesterday that two teachers had been beaten to death at their school in the northwestern Guruve region, apparently by ruling party militia. "These are being accused of rigging the elections in favour of MDC," Raymond Majongwe, secretary-general of the Progressive Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe, said.

Chemicals used to make nonstick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics are spreading around the world and turning up in surprising places, everywhere from wildlife and drinking water supplies to human blood. Now, a team of researchers including Kathleen Arcaro of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has found these suspected carcinogens in samples of human milk from nursing mothers in Massachusetts.

Hamburg Sees Worst Rioting in Years
Major May 1 riots rocked the northern German port city of Hamburg and isolated attacks occurred on Thursday in Berlin, where the head of the city's police department was forced to flee an angry crowd of left-wing demonstrators.
In Hamburg, an estimated 1,100 right-wing extremists and 7,000 left-wing radicals clashed, escalating to an unusual level of violence for the city. "These were the biggest riots the city has seen in a long time," Ralf Meyer, a spokesman for the Hamburg police, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. The intensity of the riots in the city has left officials shaken.

I had to move to another city because of the job. I soon found that

In Gothenburg I dealt with one of the major housing companies and found that they are not inclined to make any offers to non-Swede. Even if they do make an offer, it is always for
areas where only immigrants live. Immigrants are never offered any places where Swedish people live. Why this division?
Then there is discrimination in everyday life. Whenever an immigrant sits on a bus or a tram and leaves one empty seat next to him, I have found out that the probability of a Swedish person sitting next to him/her is almost zero. When the bus gets absolutely full, most people
would prefer to stand than sit next to an immigrant. It.s almost like they think we stink of rotten fish.

Black-Issues Group: Price To Pay If Clinton Wins Through Superdelegates

Gaza sewage pumped into the sea over past three months
Millions of liters of sewage have been released over the past three months into the Mediterranean Sea from the Gaza Strip, according to a new United Nations report.
Normally, the sewage is pumped to prearranged sites for treatment, but the shortage of fuel in the Gaza Strip has caused disruptions in the supply of electricity. These shortages, lack of sufficient quantities of chemicals necessary for treating sewage, and spare parts, has led the Gaza officials to pump the waste into the sea.
The authors of the report also wrote that in areas where the sewage is pumped into the sea, the color of the water is dark brown and a strong odor emanates.
Fishermen in Gaza bay claim the sewage has killed much of the fish in the area.

U.S. envoy cuts short Hebron trip after clash with settlers
The American bodyguards of a Bush administration envoy who was dispatched to the region to monitor the implementation of the road map engaged in a violent confrontation with right-wing Israelis who sought to disturb a visit to Hebron on Friday, Israel Radio reported.
One of the rightists is reported to have driven his jeep into the convoy accompanying General William Fraser. Subsequently, one of the vehicles in the convoy heavily collided with the jeep, according to Israel Radio.

Oxygen depletion threatens ocean habitats: study
Oxygen-depleted regions of tropical oceans are expanding, restricting habitats for fish and other marine life, an international team of scientists said in a study published Thursday.
The researchers found that oxygen levels at 300 to 700 meters (985 to 2,300 feet) have declined significantly over the past five decades.
"The ecological impacts of this increase could have substantial biological and economical consequences," a summary of the study said.

Thousands rally in May Day effort for immigration reform
Thousands of chanting, flag-waving immigrants and activists rallied in cities across the country Thursday, attempting to reinvigorate calls for immigration reform in a presidential election year in which the economy has taken center stage.
Turnout has fallen sharply since the first nationwide rallies in 2006, when more than 1 million people . at least 400,000 in Chicago alone . clogged streets and brought downtown traffic to a standstill. Activists say this year's efforts are focused less on protests and more on voter
registration and setting an agenda for the next president.
"Immigrants come here to support their families in Mexico," said Campos, 13. "They're not all here to do crimes."

New study: 58 percent of black children can't swim
Nearly 60 percent of African-American children can't swim, almost twice the figure for white children, according to a first-of-its-kind survey which USA Swimming hopes will strengthen its efforts to lower minority drowning rates and draw more blacks into the sport.
Black children drown at a rate almost three times the overall rate. And less than 2 percent of USA Swimming's nearly 252,000 members who swim competitively year-round are black.
The study found that 31 percent of the white respondents could not swim safely, compared to 58 percent of the blacks. The non-swimming rate for Hispanic children was almost as high, 56 percent, although more than twice as many Hispanics as blacks are now USA Swimming members.

Pro immigration numbers drop substantially at rally, as counter-demonstrators grow
Counterprotests, shouting matches and activists on bullhorns are marking a contentious scene this afternoon during an immigrant rights rally in downtown Houston.
Immigrants and their advocates are exchanging verbal salvos with counter protesters as they march. Signs reading "No human being is illegal" are contrasted by signs saying "Stop the invasion."
During the past two years, the pro-immigrant movement has suffered a series of setbacks as attempts to pass legislation with a legalization component have failed, and cities and towns across the country passed laws to curtail illegal immigration.
The Houston rally turnout on May 1, 2006 was estimated to top 10,000, but dropped to about 100 last May 1. Immigration advocates have blamed worksite enforcement raids and growing fear in immigrant communities for the tempered turnouts.

Buried Prejudice: The Bigot in Your Brain
All of us hold unconscious clichéd beliefs about social groups: black and white, female and male, elderly and young, gay and straight, fat and thin.
Such implicit bias is far more prevalent than the more overt, or explicit, prejudice that we associate with, for instance, the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazis.
Certain social scenarios can automatically activate implicit stereotypes and attitudes, which then can affect our perceptions, judgments and behavior, including the choice of whom to befriend, whom to hire and, in the case of doctors, what treatment to deliver.

Genes Explain Race Disparity in Response to a Heart Drug
Doctors who treat patients with heart failure have long been puzzled by a peculiar observation. Many black patients seem to do just as well if they take a mainstay of therapy, a class of drugs called beta blockers, as if they do not. It is almost as if they were immune to the drugs.
Now researchers at Washington University and the University of Maryland have discovered why: these nonresponsive patients have a slightly altered version of a gene that muscles use to control responses to nerve signals. People with this altered gene are making what amounts to their own version of beta blockers all the time. As many as 40 percent of blacks and 2 percent of whites have the gene variant, the researchers report.

Attempts to increase Germany's pathetic birth rate may be working
Pandas are famously bad at sex. In fact, they are so unwilling to breed that zoo keepers have to resort to all kinds of tricks to get them to procreate, including showing them pornographic movies to get them in the mood.
Ursula von der Leyen must feel a certain sympathy with the panda keepers. One of her main tasks as Germany's family minister is to coax reluctant Germans into having children, so that the shrinking of the country's population can be slowed or even reversed.
At the moment she has plenty of reasons to celebrate: Preliminary birth statistics for 2007 appear to show that her policies are having the desired effect.

Soy is a culture of death
In neighboring Argentina, thick smoke even darkened the skies in the
capital Buenos Aires two weeks ago. In that case, the smoke was coming
from bush fires set by cattle ranchers in the nearby delta of the Paraná
River. The ranchers need more pastureland because expanding soybean
farms are swallowing up their traditional pastures. Here, too, the
soybeans are being produced for the Chinese market.
It has long been clear who the losers are in this soybean rush. In Santarém, hundreds of small farmers became unemployed when they sold their fields to soybean farmers. The money was quickly spent, and now most of them live in slums, because there are now few jobs in
agriculture.
"Soy is a culture of death," says union leader Ivete Bastos. But few are interested in opinions like hers, especially not 16,000 kilometers away in China. Brazil is one of China's major trading partners. Long-term contracts between the two countries are intended to secure raw materials for China -- and, more recently, food products.

Ducks trapped in lake of toxic sludge
About 500 migrating ducks were dead or dying after landing on a pond owned by oil-sands company Syncrude Canada Ltd., officials said.
Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach was visibly angry Tuesday as he questioned why noise-making cannons were not deployed to scare the waterfowl away from the pond filled with oil-sands wastes.

U.S. Hispanic population hits 45.5 million: agency
The number of Hispanics in the United States grew to 45.5 million last year, and the country's largest minority group now makes up more than 15 percent of the U.S. population, the U.S. Census Bureau reported on Thursday.
Hispanics surpassed blacks as the largest U.S. minority in 2003 and continued to widen the gap by growing at nearly three times the pace of the black population, Census Bureau figures showed.
The Hispanic population grew by 1.4 million in the year ending July 1, 2007, while the black population grew by 540,000 to reach a total of 40.7 million, the agency said in a report on minority populations in the United States.

Neb. AG refuses to sue for immigrants' fair housing rights
Critics say Bruning's legal rationale is so off-base that he may end up in court after all â€" and not as a prosecutor. Immigration activists suggest they may be laying the groundwork for a first-of-its kind lawsuit, with Bruning as the defendant.
Bruning, a Republican who has made no secret of his ambition for higher office, argues that the federal 1996 welfare reform law prohibits him from providing legal services to illegal immigrants. He points to a section that says only legal residents should get state or local public benefits. The law defines them to include welfare, disability and health services.
It doesn't mention legal services, but Bruning believes they are included in wording that denies "any other similar benefit for which payments or assistance are provided to an individual, household or family eligibility unit."
Immigration advocates say the interpretation is unprecedented and mean-spirited, and that discrimination should be prosecuted regardless of the victim's immigration status.

You can toss your empty soda cans in the recycle bin instead of the garbage, saving energy and reducing landfill. Or you can wear hemp clothes and drive a hybrid car plastered with bumper stickers requesting the salvation of everything from owls to dust mites.
There are lots of little ways to go green, but if you really want to help save the Earth, you can start by dropping a few pounds.

Owners trash, strip their foreclosed homes
Jack O'Leary has seen foreclosed homes where ex-owners put paint on the carpets, anti-bank graffiti on the walls or took everything but the kitchen sink - then stole that, too.
"I’ve gone into houses where the light fixtures are gone, the toilets are gone, the kitchen is gone. And when I say 'gone,' we’re talking stripped down to the bare walls," said O’Leary, a Brockton Re/Max real estate agent who specializes in foreclosed homes.
With a growing number of Massachusetts homes falling into foreclosure, real estate agents say more and more ex-owners and tenants are vandalizing properties on their way out the door.

CIA director: China is not an 'inevitable enemy'
The director of the CIA told an audience at Kansas State University on Wednesday that China is "not the inevitable enemy" of the United States.
Hayden said the world's population is expected to grow by 45 percent to 9 billion people by midcentury, mostly in countries that cannot sustain such growth, such as Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Combine that with the likely mass migration to developed countries, and resources will be strained, leading to an increased risk of violence, civil unrest or
extremism, he said.
China will become an economic and political competitor to the United States, he said, but should not be treated as "an inevitable enemy."
Although the rapid growth of the Chinese military could pose a threat to the United States and Taiwan, Hayden said, he believes that the nation's aim of military modernization is about "projecting strength" and demonstrating that it has "great-power status."

(Sweden) Ruling: school wrong to deny right-wing extremists
No one has the right to obstruct right-wing extremists from passing out literature at schools, Sweden’s Chancellor of Justice has ruled.
The Karlberg School in Köping in central Sweden was in the wrong when it denied the National Democrats from handing out political information to students, the Chancellor wrote in an opinion criticizing the school’s actions.
The middle school was criticized for denying the anti-immigrant party from arranging a table displaying literature and handing out flyers to students at the school.
"You can’t shut out a political party for having an opinion which isn’t in agreement with the school’s basic values," Chancellor Göran Lambertz said to news agency TT.
[ They still have to be sure nothing is written that breaks the strict race laws - but still this is a heartening ruling. ]
