Lobsters escape from Asian Supermarket in German city of Stuttgart
Dozens of lobsters destined to be boiled alive made a successful getaway from an Asian supermarket in the German city of Stuttgart in the early hours of Sunday morning, police said.
The clawed crustaceans, some of them up to 15 centimeters long, managed to crawl out of their crates, which had been poorly secured with wire mesh, then scurried across the floor of the supermarket and squeezed through the metal shutters covering the front of the store. The front door had been left open by mistake.
"The breakout was successful," Katrin Brandeis, spokeswoman for the Stuttgart police, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "Passers by alerted the police at 1:45 a.m. reporting a large number of the animals heading down the street."
The escape may have saved their lives. "These animals weren't ever going to be pets," Brandeis said. "Now they've been taken to an animal home. The supermarket hasn't got in touch with us."
[ I have 3 pet crayfish - so perhaps people would have lobsters as pets. One of the first laws Hitler instigated was to outlaw boiling lobsters alive. ]

Feds probe S.F.'s migrant-offender shield
San Francisco juvenile probation officials - citing the city's immigrant sanctuary status - are protecting Honduran youths caught dealing crack cocaine from possible federal deportation and have given some offenders a city-paid flight home with carte blanche to return.
The city's practices recently prompted a federal criminal investigation into whether San Francisco has been systematically circumventing U.S. immigration law, according to officials with knowledge of the matter.
City officials say they are trying to balance their obligations under federal and state law with local court orders and San Francisco's policies aimed at protecting the rights of the young immigrants, who they say are often victims of exploitation.

California outlawing home schooling
The recent ruling handed down by the California Court of Appeal, 2nd District, ignited a firestorm among the home schooling community, creating uncertainty and raising the possibility of criminal prosecution among students and their families.
The court declared home schooling is not a constitutional right and parents who home school their children require a teaching credential. This ruling, which seems more political than prudent, could criminalize parents who choose to educate their own children at home because of personal beliefs.
Deciding that parents need a teaching credential to educate their own children is preposterous. Credentialing is used to hold the government accountable to parents in its hiring of teachers, not to hold parents accountable to the government.

Italy lagging on de-Italianification
"We always thought of ourselves as a monoculture, but immigration is our present and future," said Franco Pittau, an official of Caritas, a Roman Catholic social service and development association that, among other things, monitors immigration here.
Franca Eckert Coen echoed that remark. An Italian Jew in an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic city who lives in an apartment filled with Jewish art, she was in charge of multicultural policy under the former mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni. Ms. Coen recalled a year when Chinese celebrated their New Year with dragons around the Day of Epiphany.
"The newspapers said the Chinese were against Christianity," she said. "So we held a public event on the Campidoglio about Chinese culture and the New Year celebration, and now we have a Chinese parade each year."
"Little things," she called them. "They can overcome big fears. I saw all these immigrants become a little bit Italian citizens. Culture is crucial to give people here a chance to see that to be foreign is to bring a different ethnic life to the city, that diversity is a positive."

The Negro crime rate is a failure in integration - says Time Magazine
THEY are afraid to say so in public, but many of the North's big-city mayors groan in private that their biggest and most worrisome problem is the crime rate among Negroes.
But inequality of treatment by the police may actually tend to shrink rather than inflate the statistics of Negro crime. Says Newsman Wartman in the next breath: "When Negroes violate social morals sex, drinking, gambling white cops bypass this as 'typically Negro.' " Many Negro leaders protest that the police are far from diligent enough in dealing with crimes committed against Negroes and Negroes are the victims in the great majority of Negro crimes of violence. Since Negroes, even when they are victims or innocent bystanders, are often wary of calling the police, many offenses of disorder and assault go unreported when committed by Negroes in the depths of a ghetto.
But even heroic efforts by Negro leadership could only dent the Negro crime problem, because essentially it is a white problem. And it will remain a severe problem until Northern whites, private citizens as well as civic officials, recognize that Negro crime is basically a symptom of a failure in integration, and start attacking discrimination in the North with the same fervor they show in arguing for civil rights in the South.

ADL Disappointed In Supreme Court Decision On Gun Rights
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today expressed disappointment that the United States Supreme Court has curtailed the right of states to regulate firearms. In a 5-4 decision in District of Columbia v Heller, the Court's majority opinion held that the Constitution does not allow "the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home."
Glen S. Lewy, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
The culture of guns and violence is pervasive among extremists. This decision places our communities -- and the law enforcement officers that protect them -- at greater risk of violence.

Chain of Chinese restaurants in Moscow sold mongrel dog meat as beef
A chain of Chinese restaurants has been recently closed in Moscow. The restaurants were selling the meat of slaughtered mongrel dogs as beef. Eye-witnesses said that they saw employees of one of the restaurants in the back entrance carrying sacks with something moving and squeaking inside.
Psychologists acknowledge that it is hard to describe such people as adequate individuals. "When a person has a choice of either buying food at a grocery store or killing an animal for food and when he or she chooses the second option, it testifies to aggressive conduct. They used to eat dogs and cats during war times, when people had to do that to survive. Nowadays, such people need psychological help. A human being willing to slaughter a pet can vent their aggression on other people," a psychologist said.
Indeed, over 85 percent of serial killers, including cannibals, used to torture animals before they started killing people.
[ The only reason there aren't Chinese doing this is the west ( at least not to the same extent) is because we would catch and prosecute them more efficiently. Really it is wrong just because the meat is unhealthy and because it is theft of someone's pet. Interesting comment suggesting that there is something mentally ill about killing an animal for food when you could buy it ready-killed in the shop. In fact the ability to kill an animal for meat is a valuable skill - as well as a way to save money and avoid hormone-saturated meat. ]

Somali Bantu teens find a welcome in Buffalo
Imagine... You're a young teenager. Your country has erupted into civil war, There's fighting, violence, genocide, enslavement, and you witness unspeakable horror. You make it to a faraway refugee camp, but may find yourself separated from your family. Finally, in a desperate international relief effort, the United Nations rescues you. You're sent to another country, and although you’re finally out of danger, everything about your new home is different and bewildering. You cannot read, write or understand your new language, and nobody understands the language you speak. How can you possibly survive?
This story is a reality for thousands of Somali-Bantu children and their families. They fled their native Somalia to Kenyan refugee camps and have ultimately been placed in the United States. More than 13,000 Somali Bantu refugees now live in the United States, and some call Buffalo their home. The majority of the Buffalo families reside on the East and West sides of the city, and their school-age kids attend Buffalo Public Schools.

Expert says worms and parasites drain U.S. poor
Diseases caused by worms and parasites are draining the health and energy of the poorest Americans, an expert said on Tuesday.
He said the diseases help to keep people mired in poverty, as infections may last years, decades or even lifetimes.
They include ascariasis, the most common human worm infection. It is caused by a parasitic worm that lives in the intestine, and infected just under 4 million people in 1974 according to the last survey, in the South and Appalachia.
"It's amazing what we tolerate," Hotez said. He noted the United States spends $1 billion a year preparing for outbreaks of diseases that have not occurred, including smallpox, anthrax and avian influenza.
[ Why aren't these diseases given greater priority? If a serious effort was made to combat these diseases it would be very expensive while also highlighting huge gulfs in society. That's why it's brushed under the carpet. This site doesn't advocate any need to treat this demograph anyway, since we stand against pluralism. ]

White men could be blocked from jobs and promotions in UK affirmative action proposals
WHITE men could be blocked from jobs and promotions under a so-called equality drive unveiled by Labour today.
Instead women and ethnic minorities will be favoured in the workplace under a new Bill to be revealed by Equalities Minister Harriet Harman.
Critics blasted the measure as an unworkable piece of political correctness that will see good candidates overlooked for jobs in the interests of positive discrimination.
[ This is not especially new since there already are quotas for various companies and institutions to ensure more ethnic minorities are hired. Of course this is completely outrageous and a job should go to the best qualified applicant. ]

UK Metropolitan police force faces race claims from Muslim police chief
Britain's most senior Muslim police officer is preparing to sue his own force for racial discrimination. Assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur is expected to issue formal proceedings, taking Scotland Yard to an employment tribunal, imminently.
He is known to have been opposed to the proposal to extend detention of terrorism suspects without charge to 42 days, an idea championed by the Met commissioner, Sir Ian Blair.
Those close to Ghaffur say he felt increasingly sidelined and undermined and was unhappy that his contract was not extended by more than a year.
If as expected Ghaffur sues his force it will send shockwaves among ethnic minority officers across the entire police service. He has mentored many, and the prospect of the country's most senior Muslim officers claiming the police are prejudiced at a time when counter-terrorism officers are trying to increase the trust British Muslim communities have in officers, will be nothing less than damaging. Ghaffur angered some colleagues when he gave evidence in the criminal trial of fellow Met officer Ali Dizaei who was later cleared of corruption charges.
[ This looks like a concerted effort by Muslims to undermine the British state. The opposition to 42 days detention initiative is inevitable from Muslims, although it is supposed to be targetted only at fundamentalists amongst them. It seems that the more moderate Muslims may have deeper sympathies with fundamentalists than they publicly admit to. This is no surprise - Islam is meaningful to them and gives them ethnic cohesion while establishing their ambitions for dominance in a foreign land. Yet more proof of the failure of pluralism. ]

Russia likes to think of the US as it's main rival - but would China be more realistic?
Since border clashes erupted between China and the Soviet Union on the Ussuri River in 1969, Russian suspicions of Beijing have run deep. Chabola's officers are open about who they think Russia should truly fear: "the Chinese." One of the officers says that he read somewhere that Beijing has agreed not to pursue its territorial claims against Russia until 2015, "but what happens after that?"
These fears, as plainly as they are expressed by soldiers at this base, are merely worded somewhat more politely in the analyses of Moscow's political scientists. They write that the Kremlin and the military leadership still see the world through the prism of relations with the United States, and that Moscow is obsessed with a pathological desire for equality with its arch-rival and has no realistic understanding of future military dangers. According to the experts at the Institute for National Strategy, "the assumption that NATO is our main potential adversary seems rather doubtful today."
Russia should keep its eye on Beijing, says Stanislav Belkovsky, as he sits in the Akademiya Restaurant and broodingly stirs his cappuccino. According to Belkovsky, both China's propaganda and its military developments indicate that the country will expand primarily in the direction of Russia.
"What amazes us," says Belkovsky, the strategist who is so unpopular at home, "is that our leadership has simply ignored the Chinese threat until now."
[ In many respects China and Russia should be friendly towards each other and stand against the US/Israeli globalisation push. But since the US is on it's way out, and China is on the up, as far as superpower status is concerned, it really seems that China is a more realistic rival than the US. ]

British National Party benefits from disenchanted Labour Party supporters
The New Labour project relied on the assumption that its traditional support had nowhere else to go. But this is now changing, and the BNP has emerged as one beneficiary
Media coverage of the London elections focused, inevitably, on the victory of Mayor Boris. But even with a close-fought race pushing up turnout to a new high, the slow rise of the BNP continued as they gained a foothold in the London Assembly. This should not merely be a cause for concern, but for us to reflect on how our own party can respond.
The BNP polled 5.3 per cent across London and averaged 13.9 per cent in the 642 council wards it contested around the country. It now has 55 councillors and poses a serious threat across several regions in next year's European elections, not to mention the mayoral election taking place in Stoke-on-Trent next year.
There are some who still think that the BNP is a flash in the pan that will disappear as quickly as it emerged. But we are facing a shift in British politics. Traditional voting patterns are fragmenting as voters shop around for a party that best articulates their concerns and even prejudices. The emergence of the BNP is just one consequence of this change.
[ The BNP has been cleverly molded by leader Nick Griffin to appeal to these voters - with a pragmatic stance on race, and a manifesto that avoids the pitfalls of appearing to be concerned with only one issue. ]

Modern slave trade thriving
CONSIDERING it is a business that has provoked wars in centuries past, scant attention is paid to the modern slave trade. But one way to track the trade in people is the recently released annual report on trafficking in persons from America’s State Department. And it makes for gloomy reading. Though there have been improvements of late, the numbers of people involved are still appallingly high. Approximately 800,000 people are trafficked across national borders each year and millions more are traded domestically. The International Labour Organisation estimates that there are at least 2.5m people in forced labour at any one time, including sexual exploitation, as a result of trafficking.
Efforts to wipe out this modern slave trade are hampered because human trafficking is a big business. It is impossible to know the exact sums involved but recent estimates of the value of the global trafficking trade have put it as high as $32 billion. The United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking describes it as a high-reward and low-risk crime. People come cheap and many countries lack the necessary laws to target traffickers, or they are not properly enforced. Worse still, it is often the victims of the traffickers that are treated as criminals.
[ Westerners have no need to fear being forced into this kind of slavery. (We just have regular wage slavery). This is because our countries still have a lot of northern European blood. We are losing that fast. Far from the eradication of slavery - the future looks quite the opposite. ]

Ethnic studies class divides educators/community
Tom Horne came to tell reporters he thinks the ethnic studies program has racial undertones. At times during his own press conference, the superintendent of Arizona schools could barely finish a sentence.
"This is the rudeness they're taught in ethnic studies. They didn't learn that at home from their parents, they learned it from their ethnic studies teachers to be rude in that way," he says.
"They teach them that they are oppressed. Instead of teaching them as their parents and grandparents believe we came to this country because it's the land of opportunity," he says.
"They teach the kids they live in occupied Mexico, they quote as a role model a guy who says 'kill the gringos," Horne says.

London's annual free anti-racist music festival is too white
The deterrent effect of this highly politicised atmosphere should not be underestimated. Although the event was supposed to be inclusive and attract people from ethnic minorities, the GLA's own research (conducted while Ken was mayor) shows that 65%-70% of attendees in the last two years were white. That is disproportionately whiter than the population of London. It seems reasonable to conclude that the political baggage and relentless sloganeering was actually putting people off. And no doubt many individuals and families who did come on the day were there primarily for the music or a nice day out.
Londoners deserve a great, free music festival with excellent bands from around the world. They don't need to be hectored about why racism is bad or accosted by activists explaining why Castro is a hero. We don't have anti-racist fireworks on New Year's Eve and we don't need to organise an anti-paedophile concert to prove our moral credentials on the issue. Sectarian political festivals are not the way Londoners want their money to be spent. Most of us, I suspect, just want to be trusted to get on with other people and not be instructed by activists about the dangers of racism.
[ It is probably not much fun for the ethnic minorities to go somewhere that rubs their supposed victim status into their faces. ]

Philadelphia police arrest activists because they are "hate group" but cannot think of charges
Four young residents of a North Philadelphia house who circulated petitions questioning police-surveillance cameras were rousted from their home Friday and detained 12 hours without charges while police searched their house.
Daniel Moffat, 28, a co-owner of the house, said police had no warrant when they entered. The house was examined by officials from several government agencies and then shuttered by the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections.
"This leaves me homeless, without access to things I need. My whole life is disrupted," Moffat said yesterday.
The raid on the property on Ridge Avenue near Parrish Street was led by 9th District Police Capt. Dennis Wilson, who was quoted in an online story by the City Paper as saying of the residents: "They're a hate group. We're trying to drum up charges against them, but unfortunately we'll probably have to let them go."

Iran, Venezuela to launch joint bank
Iran has announced it is reviewing the launch of a joint development bank with Venezuela that would have over $1 billion in start-up funds.
"Iran and Venezuela have positive cooperation and are currently reviewing the launch of a joint bank after five meetings held on this issue so far," Venezuelan Planning and Development Minister Haiman El Troudi told Mehr News in Isfahan on the sidelines of a meeting of the OPEC Fund for International Development.

Japanese government urges jaw jaw, not war war regarding Iran
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has said it is essential that the sides concerned try to resolve Iran's nuclear issue through diplomacy.
Speaking at a group interview with news agencies of Group of Eight (G8) nations in Tokyo, Fukuda urged the international community to 'talk thoroughly and over and over again' to resolve the longstanding issue of Iran's nuclear program.
Washington and allies have so far imposed three rounds of UN sanction resolutions on Iran, targeting individuals, firms with military links and several banks to force the country to stop its uranium enrichment program.
Iran says it is determined to master nuclear technology for peaceful applications like power generation and will not bow to external pressure on the issue.

Ahmadinejad to OPEC: Dump weak dollar
Iran urges the OPEC member states again to convert their cash reserves into a basket of currencies rather than the tumbling US dollar.
"The fall in the value of US dollar is one of the pressing problems of the world today," warned the Iranian president at the conference in Isfahan on Tuesday.
He further expressed concern over the adverse effect of the dollar depreciation on the international community, especially energy exporting countries through increasing the price of commodities like wheat, rice and oilseeds.
On the soaring oil prices, the Iranian president said, "At a time when the growth of consumption is lower than the growth of production and the market is full of oil, prices are rising and this trend is completely fake and imposed."

Neo-Nazis Set Fire Turkish Houses in Germany
Two houses, which were belonged to the two Turkish families, were set fire by the Neo-Nazis in Ebersheim, Mainz city of Germany.
The attackers set fire the pram in front of the Aksungu family’s house on the Dresdener Avenue. The Aksungu family lives on the third floor of the 8-floor building. In the attack 16 people including 2 policemen were injured. After 22 hours neo-Nazis attacked the 6th floor of the apartment where another Turkish family, Sirazs live on. In the second fire a German woman was wounded.

EU agrees to freeze Iran bank's assets
A British official says European Union nations have agreed in principle to freeze the assets of Iran's largest bank.
"Action will start today in new phase of sanctions on oil and gas," Brown said. "We will take any necessary action so that Iran is aware of the choice it needs to make."
The U.S. and some of its allies accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons. Iran denies that, saying its atomic program is aimed at using nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
The U.N. Security Council has imposed three sets of limited sanctions against Iran for refusing to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that can both produce nuclear fuel and turn out the material needed for nuclear warheads.

Feds accuse militia member of planning to shoot black people from a Downtown high-rise.
A federal judge in Johnstown on Wednesday declined to jail a Clearfield County man accused of telling undercover agents last year that he planned to visit Pittsburgh to shoot black people from a Downtown high-rise.
Bradley T. Kahle, 60, of Troutville had been in custody since Sunday, when the Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested him and others on weapons charges. Agents discovered 16 improvised explosive devices while searching the home of the Vietnam veteran and self-proclaimed militiaman.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Pete Pesto said he wasn't convinced that Kahle posed a threat.
"I get no indication he was about to go from talking to doing," said Pesto, who placed Kahle on house arrest with electronic monitoring.

Journalist claims South African xenophobic violence shows blacks are most racist
Anyway back to the question of which culture was the most racists, there was by now an uneasy silence in the crowd perhaps telepathically appealing to the comedian to get it over with. As if in answer to their prayers the famous comedian then answered 'Black people!' That´s right. In his words 'Black people are the most racist.' Why? Because in his words 'Black people sometimes hate black people too'. That comment of course is open to a debate in which everyone is entitled to an opinion. But whilst battling with our opinions entitlements can we for a micro-second stop and ponder if we are in actual fact entitled to our facts? Because the facts on ground stare at us everyday like highway billboards and advertisements. Maybe, just maybe - it's high time we embrace those facts.
The incident of 'foreigners' being attacked, displaced and killed in South Africa last month has been a cause for serious concern as official reports of late has put the death toll at 56, with the injured and homeless over 600 and 80,000 respectively . It beggars belief that these 'foreigners' who have been a victim of xenophobic onslaughts actually migrated into the country to earn a decent living, contribute to the South African economy whilst at the same time sending funds home to their families and relatives in their homeland. It´s mind-boggling that these 'foreigners' overnight became victims of the resentments of the locals because they have proven to be well educated and perhaps more hardworking â€"which in the shallow-minded views of the violent perpetrators translates to ´stealing their jobs.´ The tragic part of this civil impasse is the fact that those 'foreigners' aren´t really foreigners: They are Africans.
[ It's natural for any group to resent another group when it threatens their resources. This instinct can be suppressed to a large extent by laws and social opprobrium, but it never goes away. ]

The result has been a kind of food Fordism. We are fed a production-line diet that is homogenised and bolted together from standard commodity parts. The parts, many of them created out of American agricultural surpluses, are largely controlled by an oligopoly of US-based trading and processing companies - Cargill, ADM, Bunge - that are little known in the UK. All three companies are now expanding in China and heavily involved in spreading the western industrialised diet, with its unsustainable dependence on fossil fuels and extravagant use of grains. As the Chinese move up this processed-food chain, the diet-related diseases that have afflicted us in the west are growing there too.

We won't be Berlusconi's scapegoats, say Gypsies
The eviction, against the advice of Rome's police chief, was the latest sign of the disturbing groundswell of resentment building across Italy against the 150,000-strong Roma population. In Naples, a camp was recently firebombed. Near Venice, well supported demonstrations have mobilised locals against a proposed new camp agreed by the council. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's promise to get tough on the perceived lawlessness of Gypsies and foreigners earns him huge approval ratings and gives the green light to right-wing allies, such as Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno, to take drastic action.
The tide of ill-feeling against the Gypsies has become so strong that, for some, Friday's Euro 2008 match between Italy and Romania, which ended in a 1-1 draw, became an opportunity to offer support for the beleaguered minority. A group of protesters also took to the streets in the capital, including Roma women dancing in traditional dress, Italian intellectuals and slow-marching Jewish survivors from Germany's death camps.
Marking the first such demonstration in Italy, the protesters wore the same black triangle bearing the letter Z as worn by Gypsy inmates at the camps.

$40bn shortfall in Africa aid endangers 5 million lives
Just three years after the G8 group of leading industrial nations pledged a bright new dawn for Africa at the Gleneagles summit, the promises made to double aid to the continent are $40bn behind schedule. Now the UK and the other donor nations are to be urged to consider introducing either an international lottery or a ' tax for Africa'.
The Africa Progress Panel (APP), a watchdog set up to monitor the widely lauded commitments made at the 2005 summit, whose members include Tony Blair, Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof and Nelson Mandela's wife, Graça Machel, will tomorrow reveal that foot-dragging by Western countries is not only derailing efforts to boost African economies, but is also in danger of reversing more than a decade of progress that has seen people being lifted out of poverty and health services and education noticeably improving.

Mugabe: if I lose the poll, we will wage war
A defiant President Robert Mugabe yesterday vowed he would 'go to war' if he lost the presidential run-off due to take place in less than two weeks.
Describing the opposition as 'traitors', he claimed Zimbabwe would never 'be lost' again. Speaking at the burial of a veteran of the independence war, Mugabe said he would never accept the Movement for Democratic Change taking over. 'It shall never happen ... as long as I am alive and those who fought for the country are alive,' he said. 'We are prepared to fight for our country and to go to war for it.'

Sex trade thrives in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is one of the world's most conservative countries, yet its sex trade appears to be thriving. Sex is sold most obviously at brothels full of women from China who serve both Afghans and foreigners. Far more controversial are Afghan prostitutes, who stay underground in a society that pretends they don't exist.
Customs meant to keep women "pure" have not stopped prostitution. Girls are expected to remain virgins until their wedding nights, so some prostitutes have only anal sex.
[ This hypocrisy shows the nature of Afghan men. They have no respect for women. Their religion tries to give them guidelines to protect them from degenerate behavior, but their nature is at odds with that. ]

British politician quits posts over Italy slur
A leading Conservative Welsh assembly member has resigned as the party's education spokesman after likening Italians to "greasy wops".
"In light of the inappropriate comments I made yesterday regarding Italy I believe I can no longer continue in these roles in the national assembly," he said.
"I have the utmost respect for Italy and Italian people but accept that my comments, no matter how inadvertent, were unacceptable.
"I support all efforts to tackle xenophobia and racism and will continue to promote equality and tolerance."

John McCain heightened his rhetoric about the Boumediene v. Bush decision, which grants the Guantanamo detainees to question their confinement in civilian courts:

Educators see civil rights issue in bad schools
If Johnny can't read and Sally can't add, it's often because of the color of their skin and their ZIP code, educators and activists said Wednesday.
The heads of the New York City and Washington, D.C., school systems joined with civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton and others to press for a shake-up of public schools from coast to coast to narrow the achievement gap between white students and black and Hispanic students. The group called the gap the nation's most pressing civil rights issue.
The group has yet to advocate any specific policies it wants to see enacted, but in general its leading members said they want to see greater accountability from teachers, more incentives to reward success, and greater parental responsibility for educating children.

Japan must boost immigration - ruling party panel
Japan should tackle its dearth of young people by boosting the number of immigrants to 10 percent of the population, according to a ruling party panel report set to be presented to Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda next week.
Japan faces a bleak future as its population ages faster than that of any other country, and is set to shrink by a third in 50 years if current trends continue.
Foreigners made up less than 2 percent of the nearly 128 million population in late 2006, government statistics show, but many have expressed concern that crime could rise if more immigration was allowed.

Black-Latino racial tensions, not gangs, are at the heart of LA's violence
As a Latino raised in East Los Angeles, and as the elected sheriff of Los Angeles County for the last decade, I have seen many sides of the race issue. I have lived it, in fact.
So let me be very clear about one thing: We have a serious interracial violence problem in this county involving blacks and Latinos.
Some people deny it. They say that race is not a factor in L.A.'s gang crisis; the problem, they say, is not one of blacks versus Latinos and Latinos versus blacks but merely one of gang members killing other gang members (and yes, they acknowledge, sometimes the gangs are race-based).
But they're wrong. The truth is that, in many cases, race is at the heart of the problem. Latino gang members shoot blacks not because they're members of a rival gang but because of their skin color. Likewise, black gang members shoot Latinos because they are brown.
[ There has to be more to it than the hue of the skin of course. There is group solidarity through identity and there is rivalry over resources and territory as an ethnicity although this is not as direct as gang competition. ]

Jewish mega fraudster jumped bail and faked death
A disgraced former New York hedge-fund manager has sparked a nationwide manhunt after apparently faking his own suicide on the day he was due to report to prison to begin a 20-year sentence for fraud.
Samuel Israel III, a billionaire co-founder of the Bayou Group, is being sought by police after his car was found abandoned on the Bear Mountain Bridge in upstate New York with the words "suicide is painless" written into the dust on its bonnet.
The authorities said that no body had been found, and that they were keeping an "open mind". Mr Israel had been due to report to prison by 2pm on Monday after being sentenced in April for his role in a scheme to cheat investors of $450m (£230m).
Bruce Cuccia, a police investigator, said that no witnesses had seen anyone leave the vehicle or jump from the bridge, 40 miles north of New York. CCTV footage was inconclusive.

Jewish National Fund president arrested for soliciting prostitutes
A Central Florida businessman who is the president of the Jewish National Fund's Florida zone was arrested in Kissimmee on prostitution charges in connection with a sting operation involving the Web site craigslist.org.
Bruce Gould faces charges after he allegedly went to a home to meet a prostitute from craigslist, Kissimmee police said.
Gould and 33 others were arrested in the two-week undercover operation dubbed "Operation Justice," which focused on people who either engaged in prostitution or solicited another to commit prostitution using craigslist, police said.

Do Crime Figures Mask A Truth?
Both violent and property crimes declined in 2007 from the previous year, nationally and in most of Connecticut's largest cities, the FBI reported Monday. But one expert warned the figures could mask rising murder rates among young black men.
Because the FBI preliminary figures do not contain the detailed age, race and gender breakdowns available in the final report later in the year, they may unintentionally mask a growing murder rate among black male teenagers and young adults, particularly with guns, said James Alan Fox, professor of criminal justice at Northeastern University.
"We shouldn't be fooled into thinking our problems are over," Fox said. He pointed out that from 2002 to 2006 the rate of murder committed by black male teens rose 52 percent.
"Violence is down among whites of all ages and both genders; it's up among black males, not black females," Fox said. "When you blend all the national numbers together you fail to see this divergence. There are many more whites in the population, so their decline can dwarf the increase among young black males."
[ There is no reasonable excuse for the level of crime amongst black men. If it was rising poverty, the trend would affect other races, and if it was oppression then black females would also be increasingly taking part in crime. This is down to the growth of gang culture, and its particular appeal to black men. ]

Populism in China means listening to the nationalists
Despite not having to face elections, China's Communist Party wants to be liked. Nothing wrong with that: but populism does bring some dangers.
But some Chinese worry that the party's efforts to boost its standing among the downtrodden, as well as to pander to rising nationalism, reflect a trend towards populism. The party was quick to side with nationalists who lashed out at the West in the wake of unrest in Tibetan areas in March. To its relief the earthquake helped defuse some of this anger, which was threatening to overshadow the Beijing Olympics in August. But the party still bends in the wind. Late last month officials agreed that Japanese military aircraft would bring relief materials to Sichuan. China changed its mind after vituperative outbursts online by nationalists, still angry with Japan for its occupation of China in the 1930s and 1940s. The material was sent by civilian aircraft instead.
In recent weeks some Chinese intellectuals as well as official newspapers have engaged in heated debate about the dangers of populism. In April China Youth Daily, a Beijing newspaper, published an article describing China's internet-savvy nationalists as "online Red Guards" infected by a "populist virus". This virus, it said, had had a serious impact on China's intelligentsia. Common symptoms, it said, included anti-Western, anti-democratic, anti-reform and anti-market thinking along with a love of Mao, the former Soviet Union and today's Russia. In countries with poorly developed market economies and undemocratic systems, it noted, populism was more likely to act like "dynamite". Its explosion could produce "despots or violent upheaval".

From its diminutive lavender flowers to its straggly windblown stalks, there is nothing about the beach weed known as the Great Lakes sea rocket to suggest that it might be any sort of a botanical wonder.
Yet scientists have found evidence that the sea rocket is able to do something that no other plant has ever been shown to do.
The sea rocket, researchers report, can distinguish between plants that are related to it and those that are not. And not only does this plant recognize its kin, but it also gives them preferential treatment.

Canada apologises to Indians for years of abuse in schools
CANADA'S prime minister was to offer a public apology yesterday for his country's century-long policy of forcing Canadian Indian children into Christian schools to strip them of their aboriginal culture.
From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 children were sent to the state-funded schools. Many were forced to leave their parents' homes, as part of a programme to integrate them into Canadian society, and became victims of physical and sexual abuse.

Students Fail and Professor Loses Job
These are the questions at the center of a dispute that cost Steven D. Aird his job teaching biology at Norfolk State University. Today is his last day of work, but on his way out, he has started to tell his story - one that he suggests points to large educational problems at the university and in society. The university isn’t talking publicly about his case, but because Aird has released numerous documents prepared by the university about his performance - including the key negative tenure decisions by administrators - it is clear that he was denied tenure for one reason: failing too many students. The university documents portray Aird as unwilling to compromise to pass more students.
A subtext of the discussion is that Norfolk State is a historically black university with a mission that includes educating many students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The university suggests that Aird - who is white - has failed to embrace the mission of educating those who aren't well prepared. But Aird - who had backing from his department and has some very loyal students as well - maintains that the university is hurting the very students it says it wants to help. Aird believes most of his students could succeed, but have no incentive to work as hard as they need to when the administration makes clear they can pass regardless.

Cuba to abandon wage caps
Cuba is to abandon egalitarian salaries after decades of government control in a bid to improve the nation's productivity, a senior government official has revealed.
It is thought that an end to the capped wages set up by Fidel Castro in 1959 could spark the beginnings of a new middle class in Cuba.
In an interview published in Granma, the Communist party's daily newspaper the minister for labour and social security, Carlos Mateu, said the current system gave employees little incentive to excel because everyone earned the same regardless of how much work they put in.
Many government-run companies had already stopped caps on salaries and the rest must do so by August, Mateu said.

Imams to teach in UK state schools
Imams will teach in state schools under Government plans for tackling extremism to be announced next week.
Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, admitted today that a minority of children could be "at risk" from extremists and said that schools must be able to deal with radicalisation.
British-born imams will be drafted in to schools to instruct children about Islam and the Koran as part of the Government's
"Prevent" strategy, which aims to weed out extremism before it takes root.
Lessons will include teachings from the Koran and discussions about equality between the sexes, the sanctity of life and the rights of the individual. Mr Balls said the citizenship lessons would help young people to feel "part of their society, and resilient to those who seek to divide rather than unite".
[ This is an excuse to have muslims teaching White British children about the Koran, etc. and it is further indication that the government is smoothing the path towards Islamification of Britain. Varg Vikernes "too dangerous for parole".
Convicted murderer Varg Vikernes is too dangerous to be released into society, according to justice officials. Government critics fear that his background as an ideologically motivated church-burning arsonist, and his connections with neo-Nazi groups, are making it impossible for him to get a fair parole hearing.
Case workers at the Justice Ministry fear that Vikernes will be unable to adjust to life on the outside after his years in jail. They have turned down his application.
"I can't understand it. They want me to make arrangements with social services, even though this is unnecessary. Must I be on welfare in order to be released? I have a house, a job and a family waiting for me," Vikernes told daily newspaper VG.
The authorities emphasize that Vikernes escaped from prison in 2003 and that he has ties to neo-Nazi groups.
"I haven't been in contact with them for a long time. Police security services know this," Vikernes responded.
Parole authorities refuse to comment on the reasons for rejecting his application, referring to the confidentiality that surrounds such hearings.

UK government insists immigrants are an economic benefit
LABOUR was accused of being in "absurd" denial last night as it prepares to officially slap down a devastating House of Lords report on the impact of mass immigration.
Liam Byrne, Immigration Minister, will tomorrow claim that the findings of a powerful group of peers were "overspun" from "under-done" analysis.
In April, the House of Lords report ripped to shreds every economic argument the Govern-ment has put forward for its open-door policy and called for an annual cap.
But Mr Byrne will once again insist that immigrants are an economic benefit and will try to shrug off the study, which was compiled by leading economists and two former chancellors.

Australia ends Iraq combat role
Australia, one of the first countries to commit troops to the war in Iraq five years ago, has ended its combat operations there.
Australian troops are due to begin returning home in a few days in line with a promise by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who swept to power in November.
He said the previous government had abused intelligence information to justify joining the Iraq war.

Russia-for-Russians law seen as racist pandering
Migrant workers in Russia found themselves legislated out of a job yesterday after a controversial new law reserving retail jobs for ethnic Russians came into force.
The legislation, which has been described as state-sponsored racism by human rights activists, bans non-Russians from working in large swaths of the country's retail sector.
It will affect Russia's food and clothing markets and the thousands of roadside kiosks that sell anything from newspapers to cosmetics .
Until yesterday it was not uncommon to visit a market staffed exclusively by migrant workers from across the former Soviet Union. Now hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from countries such as Georgia, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan are looking for new jobs.

Oil price crisis threatens to reverse globalisation
With brutal efficiency, the oil price is beginning to duff up a monster of the 20th century: globalisation. Those great tentacles that gripped our world in a hideous embrace are suddenly weakening and the multinational octopus is looking a bit pale and sickly. The extraordinary rise in the price of crude oil is wrecking outsourced business models everywhere and distance from your customer is no longer merely a matter of dull logistics. Whether you are selling coiled steel or cut flowers, the cost of transport is a problem.
America's steel industry is enjoying an unexpected revival, its competitive edge sharpened by the tariff wall erected by the cost of shipping heavy, low added-value products across the Pacific. We hear fewer complaints from Americans about Asian steel-dumping; instead, it is Asian exporters who are feeling the pinch and the pressure is from inputs as well as shipping to customers.
[ A cheaper source of energy will have to be found for globalization to contine. Let's hope it fails. ]

Is Hollywood Whitewashing Ethnic Roles?
In the new movie "Stuck," which opened last week, actress Mena Suvari plays a young woman named Brandi, who, after a night of partying, strikes a homeless man with her car, sending him through her windshield, and leaves him to die.
The plot is based on the real-life story of Texas woman Chante Mallard, who, at age 27, was convicted of murder and evidence tampering, and given 50-year and 10-year concurrent sentences after she hit Gregory Biggs and left him to die stuck in her windshield.
Mallard is African-American. Suvari, the blonde, blue-eyed beauty from "American Beauty" and the "American Pie" movies, is not. But she does wear cornrows to play the role of Brandi.

Fraudsters net $billions from the war in Iraq
A BBC investigation estimates that around $23bn (£11.75bn) may have been lost, stolen or just not properly accounted for in Iraq.
For the first time, the extent to which some private contractors have profited from the conflict and rebuilding has been researched by the BBC's Panorama using US and Iraqi government sources.
A US gagging order is preventing discussion of the allegations.
The order applies to 70 court cases against some of the top US companies.

NY Times makes an argument favoring amnesties for illegal immigrants
The United States has an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, a record number. Its last mass amnesty program, which began in 1987, legalized 2.7 million. President Bush proposed an immigration plan that would give some workers a path to legalization. But it died last year under assault from people who said it would lead to more illegal immigration.
Europe has held at least 20 legalizations in the past 25 years, giving residency papers to about four million people. Italy and Spain account for about two-thirds of the total, to the consternation of northern Europeans who see the south as the Continent's weak back door. With free movement across much of Europe, legalized immigrants can easily head north, alarming those worried about job competition, welfare costs, cultural clashes or terrorist threats.
Southern Europe's tolerance for illegal immigration has several explanations. Its aging populations and booming economies created a need for foreign workers. Its proximity to northern Africa and eastern Europe places it close to countries that supply them. And its economies have traditionally depended more on off-the-books workers.

Mistrial Declared in Seattle Hate Shooting
A judge declared a mistrial in the case of the gunman who shot up the offices of this city's Jewish federation.
The King County prosecutor vowed to retry Naveed Haq, 32, who claimed he was not guilty by reason of insanity.
The jury said it could not agree on all but one of the 15 counts of murder and attempted murder against Haq, whose July 2006 shooting spree at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle left one woman dead and seriously injured five.
Haq kidnapped a 14-year-old girl to gain entrance into the building and began shooting as he reached the federation's second-floor reception area. He spewed anti-Israel and anti-Jewish slurs during the attack while decrying the Iraq war and Israel's 2006 conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Haq made similar comments on a video shown in the courtroom prior to the trial's start.

New Orleans crime rising fast
Eighty-five homicides have been recorded this year, slightly up from 83 by early June last year, New Orleans police spokesman Bob Young says. But violent crimes such as rape and armed robbery increased 57 percent and 24 percent, respectively, in the first three months of the year, compared with 2007, according to the most recent police statistics.
Some say the city's future hinges on whether it can tackle the crime crisis.

Study: 1 in 4 adults in NYC have herpes virus
A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.
Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms.
The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

Manitoba kids seized over nazi concerns
The Manitoba government has seized two young children from a Winnipeg home based on concerns their father - an alleged neo-Nazi - was filling their heads and marking their bodies with messages of hate.
The government agency is now seeking a permanent order of guardianship based on ongoing concerns about the safety of the seven-year-old girl and two-year-old boy.
A source told the newspaper the girl showed up one morning in class with writing on her body, including a swastika and a common white supremacist symbol "14/88."
"There are also concerns about parental drug and alcohol use in the home," CFS wrote.
[ That the kids would be taken into care over drug and alcohol concerns is understandable. That the reason given is their parent's lack of political correctness is highly disturbing. ]

Iran threatens a 'painful response' if Israel attacks
Iran's official IRNA news agency says the country's defense minister has warned of a "painful response" if Israel attacks Iran.
IRNA said Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar has called Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz threat to attack Iran if it doesn't abandon its nuclear program "foolish."
"If somebody wants to do such a foolish job, the response will be very painful," IRNA quoted Najjar as saying.
[ That should be interesting. Israel should not attack Iran, but almost certainly will. It could start an escalation ending in WWIII. ]

Honour violence widespread in Sweden
Honour-related violence is rampant across the country, according to a new study by Sveriges Radio.
Nearly 60 percent of the country's social services have helped victims of honour violence or those threatened with honour violence to hide themselves.
75 percent of the country's social services answered a survey from Sveriges Radio. Seven of ten responded that they had dealt with cases involving honour-related violence.
Honour-related violence most often affects women and young girls. In families where it occurs, can girls be strictly controlled and have their social lives sharply restricted.

National Socialists Win Elections Across German State Of Saxony
Saxony, Germany -- The national socialist National Democratic Party of Germany won elections over the weekend in every county of the state of Saxony, winning representation on every county council and trouncing the Social Democrats in at least two towns.
This major election victory, which was the first in which the NPD contested every county council seat in the state, saw the number of votes for NPD candidates quadruple from 41,000 in the previous election to 160,000.
The election victory upset mainstream newspapers and mainstream government officials in Germany, who have repeatedly attempted to ban the National Democratic Party and who have jailed several of its leaders in recent weeks in an effort to discredit the organization.
Just like other dictatorships, the government of Germany routinely jails political opponents and abuses its power to corruptly influence elections and the electorate. Despite these repressive measures, however, resistance to the occupation government, still in force since World War II, has grown, and has found its channel in the form of the NPD.

During the first interval I decided to take a break on one of the benches at the back. As I sat there, contemplating how I should be more selective in choosing what charities to support, a tall, handsome, black man strode up to me and, without saying a word, thrust a card into my lap; then he swiftly walked away. I picked up the card, which had all his details, and wondered what on earth I was meant to do with it. The card said he was a former West Indies international cricketer. Did he think I looked like the type who'd want lessons? I was bewildered.
I continued compering the gig, and then, in the next interval, he walked up to me and said: "Well, make sure you call me." He then grabbed my hand and turned it over. "Good, no wedding rings. Call me and then we can arrange for you to come to Kingston Town. You will love it there, and you will love me, too."
"You're a bit forward," I said.
"Yes, that's how it should be," he told me enthusiastically. "English men are useless. They beat around the bush and nothing gets done."
I thought: "You wait all year for one, then when it does come along, it's harassment gift-wrapped in seduction."
Of course, I didn't call him, and I certainly had no intention of eloping to Kingston Town with a former Windies international cricketer. I can't do things like that: my parents are still alive.

Efforts to help keep world temperature rises under 2C will fail, says thinktank
Britain will find it 'impossible' to meet its target as part of the world's battle to ensure temperatures do not rise more than 2C - a key threshold for dangerous climate change, according to a study by a panel of leading experts.
The report 'Carbon Scenarios' by the Stockholm Network thinktank says that if existing policies and hopes of international agreement on reducing emissions were implemented, there would still be a 90 per cent chance the temperature rise would reach about 3C, a level that experts fear would provoke 'feedback' of more carbon by melting permafrost, threatening the world's forests.
If governments let policies 'stall and backslide' - as many appear to be doing - the rise would be 4.8C, says the study, to be published tomorrow. 'The two-degree target is impossible, and [a] three-degree target is implausible,' said Paul Domjan, energy fellow at the London-based European thinktank and an author of the report.

Albinos being "hunted" for their body parts
Discrimination against albinos is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa, but recently in Tanzania it has taken a wicked twist: At least 19 albinos, including children, have been killed and mutilated in the past year, victims of what Tanzanian officials say is a growing criminal trade in albino body parts.
Many people in Tanzania - and across Africa, for that matter - believe albinos have magical powers. They stand out, often the lone white face in a black crowd, a result of a genetic condition that impairs normal skin pigmentation and strikes about one in 3,000 people here. Tanzanian officials say witch doctors are now marketing albino skin, bones and hair as ingredients in potions that are promised to make people rich.

The acrimonious feud between two of Hollywood's best-known film directors reached a new level of name-calling and accusation at the weekend as Spike Lee invoked America's bitter legacy of slavery in response to Clint Eastwood's comments to the Guardian on Friday.
Responding to Lee's criticism of his second world war films for ignoring black soldiers, Eastwood said America's most influential black director, should "shut his face".
But after the remarks were reported around the world, Lee hit back, reminding the older man that they were not "on a plantation".

China's shoreline waters seriously polluted: expert
Vast stretches of China's coastal waters are seriously polluted, and the country's coastal wetlands and mangrove forests are vanishing, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday, citing a marine specialist.
Luan Weixin, a professor at the Economics and Management College at Dalian Maritime University, said 50 percent of inland coastal wetlands had disappeared because of excessive reclamation and 80 percent of coral reefs and mangrove forests had been destroyed over the past 50 years.
Severely affected areas included waters near East Liaoning, Bohai and Hangzhou bays, and the estuaries of the Yellow, Yangtze and Zhujiang rivers, as well as inshore areas of major coastal cities, he told a conference in the northern coastal city of Tianjin.
"Over the past 20 years or so, China's marine economy has been developing at a staggeringly rapid pace and marine resources are being widely tapped. As a result, the condition of China's inshore environment is deteriorating and the ocean ecology has been seriously damaged," Luan said.

Group demands Venezuela envoy recall over Jewish conspiracy remark
A leading anti-Semitism watchdog group wants Venezuela's ambassador to Russia recalled.
The Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center says Ambassador Alexis Navarro made anti-Semitic comments.
Navarro was quoted by the daily Moscow News as saying that a failed 2002 coup that briefly ousted President Hugo Chavez involved Israeli Mossad intelligence snipers "who were Venezuelan citizens, but Jews." The remarks appeared in an interview the newspaper published on May 15.
The group said in a statement Friday that it wrote a letter to Venezuela's foreign minister saying the comments were racist and incite violence against Jews.

Equality has made dunces of children
Education, education, education? For shame, for shame, for shame. New Labour's failure to rescue state education, let alone improve it, will be its most disgraceful legacy. The Conservatives should not crow; when in office they also failed to take on the forces destroying education.
Each week the news is full of reports of stagnating standards, more university dropouts (one in seven students, despite government "investment" of £1 billion since 2003), a shortage of teachers, particularly in maths and science, and a majority of underqualified teachers. However, two dismal stories stood out last week, both as symptom and explanation of what is wrong.
One of the three leading universities in the country, Imperial College London, announced that in 2010 it would introduce an entrance exam for applicants because it cannot rely on A-level results. Sir Richard Sykes, the college's rector, suggested that grade inflation in A-levels made them almost "worthless" as a way of choosing between candidates: "Everybody who applies has got three or four As."
Behind the rector’s story and the professor's story lies the obstinate folly of generations of teachers and theorists of education. Obsessed with equality and social engineering, they refused to recognise the simple truth that children and students vary. Children are born with different abilities, into different environments, which exaggerate those differences: ignoring those differences is no way to help them all, nor is clumsy social engineering.
[ The author does not mention the academics, chiefly Richard Lynn, who have been highlighting the connectiontion between class and IQ and the futility of positive discrimination boosting working class children. She has surely been inspired by these views however. ]

Obama nazi death threats scare
BARACK Obama is being shielded by a £50million security operation after death threats from twisted racist groups.
FBI chiefs believe at least three white supremacist organisations want to assassinate the Democrat aiming to become America's first black president.
According to the source, three groups believed to be targeting Obama are the National Socialist Vanguard, the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan.
Most dangerous of the hate-filled trio is the once-powerful Klan. The source said: "All three groups are seen as posing a threat. But the Klan, in particular, has a nucleus of supporters who are prepared to pursue violence to get their message across."

Oslo couple charged with mutilating their daughters
The mother and father of five daughters born and reared in Norway have been charged in what's considered the first enforcement and test of the country's new law against genital mutilation.
The couple is originally from Gambia but both partners are now Norwegian citizens. They have a total of six daughters, and five of the six have been subjected to genital mutilation, according to Hanne Kristin Rohde of the Oslo Police District.
Rohde told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) Friday that the parents were charged because they allegedly contributed to the genital mutilation of their daughters. The father is being held in police custody, while the mother is ill and pregnant with their seventh child and considered too weak to be held by police.

Neo-Nazi arrests on National Day
Over 100 neo-Nazis were arrested by police as National Day celebrations turned violent in Stockholm on Friday.
Running battles were fought between fascist and anti-fascist extremists throughout the day as neo-Nazi groups led by the National Socialist Front (NSF) marched in Stockholm to celebrate National Day.
114 NSF and Swedish Resistance Movement (SMR) members were arrested soon after the completion of their "People's March" at around 6pm by Filmhuset on Gardet. 200 neo-Nazis remained in the area for a meeting and police intervened when they began chanting "Sieg Heil" and making Hitler salutes.
Goranzon was unable to recall a previous mass arrest of such a large group for racial agitation

Many white South Africans are moving to Australia
Last week I found myself, briefly, in the land of menace and fortified shopping malls, prestige cars and electric fences, natural beauty and violent crime. And I found myself thinking about all the South Africans migrating to Australia. For although public debate about African migration tends to focus on Sudanese refugees, many more African migrants arrive from South Africa - and they tend to be white.
"Packing for Perth" has become slang for whites leaving South Africa, so popular has Australia become as a destination. At the time of the 2006 census, there were 104,120 people in Australia who were born in South Africa. More than half had arrived since Nelson Mandela became president in 1994.
[ Many of those leaving SA were opponents of apartheid. They obviously don't like the paradise they helped create. Anyone like that should be forced to stay. ]

Ethiopia facing new famine with 4.5 million children in danger of starvation
Ethiopia is facing a new famine as drought and rising food prices threaten starvation for 4.5 million children, aid agencies warned.
Children under five are worst affected with more than 75,000 suffering from severe malnutrition and in need of urgent care, according to Unicef.
An estimated 3.4 million Ethiopians will need emergency food aid over the next three months while nearly double that figure are at risk of malnutrition.

Zimbabwe: Robert Mugabe accused of using food as 'political weapon'
The US ambassador to Harare, James McGee, said that President Mugabe was using food as a "political weapon", allowing members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change food aid only if they handed over their voting cards.
The claim came after the regime banned all overseas aid agencies and non-government organisations from working in Zimbabwe, ending the food relief they provide to millions of dependent Zimbabweans.
Mr McGee said the government was trying to become the sole distributor of food to help President Mugabe win the election in three weeks' time.
[ The west should certainly stop feeding Africa - although it is unlikely we will. Why doesn't Mugabe just cancel the election altogether since it cannot be recognized as legal if he does it this way anyway? ]

Al-Qaida threatens Norway
Terrorist organization al-Qaida, which has claimed responsibility for Monday's bombing of the Danish Embassy in Pakistan, now is making threats against Norway as well.
The Danish attack was another reprisal against a Danish newspaper's publication of caricatures depicting the prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban. Muslims around the world were offended, and many staged violent demonstrations at the time, also against some Norwegian targets because a small Norwegian magazine had reprinted the drawings.
Al-Yazid claimed that more attacks are in the works, and the targets will be embassies and diplomatic personnel from countries that also published the Mohammed caricatures.
[ What a pathetic reason for a bombing campaign. All this does is lose al Qaeda sympathy. Who benefits? ]

Sweden: Far-right extremists in violent clash with leftists
Far-right extremists clashed with a gang of left-wingers on the streets of Gothenburg early on Friday morning.
According to the police, the people involved are a group of far-right extremists and their left-wing opposites, the Afa (Anti-Fascist Action group).
Shortly before 6am on Friday morning, police were notified that a fight had broken out, with participants using iron pipes as weapons.
The police do not know exactly how many people were involved, but nine people have been taken in for questioning.

'Unavoidable' attack on Iran looms, says Israeli minister
An Israeli minister has said an attack on Iran's nuclear sites will be "unavoidable" if Tehran refuses to halt its alleged weapons programme.
In the most explicit threat yet by a member of Ehud Olmert's government, Shaul Mofaz, a deputy prime minister, said the hardline Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, "would disappear before Israel does".
"If Iran continues with its programme for developing nuclear weapons, we will attack it. The sanctions are ineffective," Mofaz, who is also Israel's transport minister, said in comments published today by the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
"Attacking Iran in order to stop its nuclear plans will be unavoidable."

Australia favours an Asian political union and common currency
A UNIFIED currency and open borders could follow any union between Australia and Asia, an expert says.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today announced his plan to create a broad Asia-Pacific Community by 2020.
Professor Tim Lindsey from Melbourne University said an Asian Union was a fantastic idea.
"We are living in the "Asia century,'' he said.
"Australia is uniquely positioned as the only Western society in Asia and we have never capitalised on that, despite most of our commodities going to Asia.''

Pakistani Earthquake Used as Opportunity to Steal Property from Widowed Women
According to the United Nations' Integrated Regional Information Networks, the earthquake in Pakistan at the end of last year was used as an opportunity to steal land and other property from unmarried women.
Typical of such victims is Zumera Bibi. The IRIN report describes how Zumera and her four daughters left their house temporarily after the quake. While she was gone, her dead husband's nephews seized the property and claimed it as theirs. According to the IRIN story,
Zumera has no sons, and as tradition dictates she and her daughters have no right to the property, which would revert back to the brothers of her husband on his death. Even though, under the law, her daughters should get at least a share in the inheritance, this is frequently denied to women.
Well there's a shock from a part of the world where women can be raped as a method of tribal revenge.

Survey: Risky acts more likely for Hispanic teens
Hispanic high school students use drugs and attempt suicide at higher rates than their black or white classmates, according to a new federal survey that shows a continuation of a disturbing trend.
The study is the latest in a series of surveys of U.S. high school students every two years. The new report noted that black and white students are reporting less sexual activity than in years past, but there was no decline among Hispanics.
In addition, Hispanic students were more likely than either blacks or whites to attempt suicide, ride with a driver who had been drinking alcohol, or use cocaine, heroin or ecstasy.
[ Must be something in their culture. (And culture is a reflection of genetic predispostion of course). Blacks have had a lot of pressure from within their community in recent years to stop behaving as irresponsibly, and that might have paid off a little. ]

Irish school has only non-Irish enrolling this year
CHANGES in the population were brought into focus yesterday when a Dublin school revealed there isn't a single Irish-born pupil among those enrolled in its infant classes for next year.
The school is in the north inner city, where already nearly half the pupils are minority ethnic and language students, and that percentage is rising.
Figures from eight local schools in the Dublin 7 area show that there are 1,839 pupils enrolled this year -- of whom nearly half, or 855, are minority ethnic and language students.

German Newspaper Slammed for Racist Cover
The German newspaper Die Tageszeitung has a reputation for leftist social sensitivity. All the more bizarre then was its choice of a cover to mark Obama's victory in the race for the Democratic Party nomination: a photo of the White House under the headline "Uncle Barack's Cabin."
Gary Smith, executive director of the American Academy in Berlin, a private center which promotes trans-Atlantic relations, told SPIEGEL ONLINE Thursday that the cover left him "speechless." "'Uncle Tom' is a racial slur, and the Taz editors clearly sacrificed substance and principle for an unreflected laugh," he said. "A journalism that prides itself on treating stereotypes with irreverence needs to think harder about its own deployment of stereotypes and racial allusions. There are countless ways to address the issue of race in this year's election more intelligently."
[ This was supposed to be satirical, but many on the Left have no sense of humour and non-whites see racial slurs everywhere. ]

Revealed: Secret plan to keep Iraq under US control
A secret deal being negotiated in Baghdad would perpetuate the American military occupation of Iraq indefinitely, regardless of the outcome of the US presidential election in November.
The terms of the impending deal, details of which have been leaked to The Independent, are likely to have an explosive political effect in Iraq. Iraqi officials fear that the accord, under which US troops would occupy permanent bases, conduct military operations, arrest Iraqis and enjoy immunity from Iraqi law, will destabilise Iraq's position in the Middle East and lay the basis for unending conflict in their country.
But the accord also threatens to provoke a political crisis in the US. President Bush wants to push it through by the end of next month so he can declare a military victory and claim his 2003 invasion has been vindicated. But by perpetuating the US presence in Iraq, the long-term settlement would undercut pledges by the Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama, to withdraw US troops if he is elected president in November.

Israel asks Brazil to extradite rabbi
An Israeli rabbi who fled to Brazil amid child-abuse allegations is likely to be extradited for trial.
Israeli police said Wednesday they had asked Brazil to extradite Rabbi Elior Chen, 29, who turned himself in to police in Sao Paulo.
Israel had issued an international arrest warrant for Chen, who is alleged to have counseled his followers to severely beat and burn children in order to rid them of the devil. Other children allegedly were forced to drink alcohol and turpentine until they vomited.
Some of the abuses have resulted in serious and life-threatening injuries. One toddler remains in a vegetative state.

German "national socialists for Israel".
"Stop the hatred of the Jewish people," the Web site reads. "The Jews are a healthy, strong nation."
The organization - whose members have yet to reveal themselves to the public - claims that Israel's right to exist is anchored in the principles of social Darwinism, the same principles which the Nazis adopted prior to the Second World War.
"Israel earned the right to live among the nations [after emerging] from unending wars," the group writes on the site. "Israel also has a right to exist. This nation also has culture... The nation of Israel is appreciated... It is our duty, as neo-Nazis, to defend this supreme success. Not just for the German people and the European cultural sphere, but also, especially, for Israel."
As such, "Nazis for Israel" also leveled criticism at their colleagues in the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD), calling them "politicos, cowards, and reactionaries."
"Show us proof of a Jewish plot to dominate the world," they wrote in a rare manifesto which was posted on their Web site.
