9-year-old suspended for saying "brown people"
The boy was suspended for three days this month for allegedly committing a “hate crime” by using the expression “brown people.”
A Glendale elementary school principal has admitted to telling a 9-year old boy that it is OK to have racist feelings as long as you keep them to yourself.
But the tape recording indicates this only came out after another parent was allowed to question the boy and elicited from him the statement that he “doesn’t cooperate with brown people.”
After that was reported to the boy’s teacher, he was made to stand in front of his class and publicly confess what he’d said.
The boy maintains that he never said it; that the words were put in his mouth by the parent who questioned him. That parent happens to be the mother of the student with whom he is having a conflict—and she happens to work for Abraham Lincoln as a detention-room officer.
[ They are people. And they are brown. We are projecting adult neurosis onto innocent children who should have the right to believe whatever they want without conditioning, anyway. ]

Swiss advertise in Africa against emigration to Switzerland
A German media report said the European Union and Switzerland have started a television, radio and poster campaign in African countries to keep potential illegal migrants from trying to immigrate to Europe.
A sequence of images in the film includes a telephone ringing with an older, black man in a cozy apartment picking it up to hear his son on the other end. The father asks his son if he’s found a home and how his studies are going. The son is then shown in a grungy camp under a bridge, but answers that everything is fine. More images appear, showing him sitting on the side of the street and begging, and then later being picked up by police.

Science is a form of religion
The New York Times is running a provocative piece on the faith-based nature of science: "The problem with this neat separation into 'non-overlapping magisteria,' as Stephen Jay Gould described science and religion, is that science has its own faith-based belief system. All science proceeds on the assumption that nature is ordered in a rational and intelligible way.... [B]oth religion and science are founded on faith . namely, on belief in the existence of something outside the universe, like an unexplained God or an unexplained set of physical laws, maybe even a huge ensemble of unseen universes, too. For that reason, both monotheistic religion and orthodox science fail to provide a complete account of physical existence.... [U]ntil science comes up with a testable theory of the laws of the universe, its claim to be free of faith is manifestly bogus.

Tropical storms are increasing in number
Counting tropical storms that occurred before the advent of aircraft and satellites relies on ships logs and hurricane landfalls, making many believe that the numbers of historic tropical storms in the Atlantic are seriously undercounted. However, a statistical model based on the climate factors that influence Atlantic tropical storm activity shows that the estimates currently used are only slightly below modeled numbers and indicate that the numbers of tropical storms in the recent past are increasing, according to researchers.

Scientists worry about impact of nanotechnology
The unknown human health and environmental impacts of nanotechnology are a bigger worry for scientists than for the public, according to a new report published today (Nov. 25) in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
The new report was based on a national telephone survey of American households and a sampling of 363 leading U.S. nanotechnology scientists and engineers. It reveals that those with the most insight into a technology with enormous potential -- and that is already emerging in hundreds of products -- are unsure what health and environmental problems might be posed by the technology.

Middle-class whites keep America growing, healthy
Urban centers that have been traditional favorites for young singles, such as Chicago, Boston, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, have experienced below-average job and population growth since 2000. San Francisco and Chicago lost population during that period; even immigrant-rich New York City and Los Angeles County have shown barely negligible population growth in the last two years, largely due to a major out-migration of middle class families.
Married people with children tend to be both successful and motivated, precisely the people who make economies go. They are twice as likely to be in the top 20% of income earners, according to the Census, and their incomes have been rising considerably faster than the national average.
Indeed, if you talk with recruiters and developers in the nation's fastest growing regions, you find that the critical ability to lure skilled workers, long term, lies not with bright lights and nightclubs, but with ample economic opportunities, affordable housing and family friendly communities not too distant from work.
As Morley Winograd and Michael Hais suggest in their upcoming book, "Millennial Mainstream," this new generation is twice as numerous as Generation X, and far more family-oriented. They display markedly less proclivity for teen pregnancy, abortion and juvenile crime. They also tend to have more favorable relations with their parents, with half staying in daily touch and almost all in weekly contact.

Modern society makes people into islands, selfish
China's phenomenal economic growth has created a generation of "emperors" and "empresses," the now-adult children of China's one-child policy, who often put their needs before anything and anyone else.
Experts say many of this generation are unable to sustain relationships, a result of being spoilt only children, doted on by parents and grandparents who catered to their every whim.
The problem of grown only children having difficulties sustaining relationships is particularly pronounced among the affluent middle-and upper-classes who have accumulated enormous wealth from China's economic success.
Brought up in China's economic and social turmoil of the 1950s and 1960s, many parents buried themselves in work to build a better life as the country underwent dizzying economic growth over the past two decades just as their kids reached their teens.
"They ignored the emotional education of their children," explained Prof. Fucius.
"Kids today start their relationship right from the bed," said Xu. "It's a completely new generation."
"This generation faces a completely different set of reality versus their parents," explained Professor Fucius. "They are very much self-oriented, not others-oriented or social-oriented."
"Their parents listen to what the superiors, tradition and other people have to say. They listen to themselves."

Minorities riot and burn Paris
The unrest showed anger still smolders in France's poor neighborhoods, where many Arabs, blacks and other minorities live largely isolated from the rest of society.
The trigger was the deaths Sunday of two minority teens when their motorscooter collided with a police car in Villiers-le-Bel, a blue-collar town on Paris' northern edge.
Patrice Ribeiro of the Synergie police union said rioters this time included "genuine urban guerrillas," saying the use of firearms . hunting shotguns so far . had added a dangerous dimension.
Youths, many of them Arab and black children of immigrants, again appeared to be lashing out at police and other targets seen to represent a French establishment they feel has left them behind.
Despite decades of problems and heavy state investments to improve housing and create jobs, the depressed projects that ring Paris are a world apart from the tourist attractions of the capital.

Blacks believe black poverty due to irresponsibility
Williams wrote, "53 percent of black Americans now agree that 'blacks who can't get ahead are mostly responsible for their own condition.'" The Pew poll also found that 61 percent of blacks believe that the values of lower-class blacks have become "more different" from those of middle-class blacks in recent years. African-Americans now seem to agree with a majority of whites that black poverty is a problem of individual responsibility rather than a social issue.
Whites especially seem to think the races have reached equal status -- a whopping 71 percent agree that blacks who can't get ahead are responsible for their troubles. Yet for every poll trumpeting that Americans believe we're moving toward racial equality, there's a sociological study proving that the opposite is happening. The same week the PEW/NPR study was announced, the Wall Street Journal reported that blacks born into the middle class are "far more likely than whites to earn less than their parents ... Children of black parents earning in the middle 20 percent of all families in the late 1960s had a 69 percent chance of earning less than their parents, the study found. Race is physical, genetic
A trained artist can look at a skull and immediately tell the race and gender of a corpse.
"If you turn the skull of a white male sideways, it's almost like a truck hit it. It's just straight up and down flat," said Marla Lawson, a renowned forensic artist who works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. "The forehead protrudes very little and the chin sinks in. But for African-Americans, they slightly slope at the forehead and they protrude slightly at the mandible and they have these great cheekbones. Their skulls weigh more than white people's skulls, and their teeth will be whiter and brighter usually."
An Asian person's skull will have a wider facial area, Lawson said, but people of Hispanic descent are more challenging because the structures are nearly identical to Caucasians.
But determining male and female is easy, said Lawson who created the first, and dead-on, likeness of Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph while he was a fugitive. Run your fingers vertically over your eyebrows. Males feel a defined ridge under the brow line. A woman's face is smoother.

"Native Americans" were neither native nor American
One of the most comprehensive analyses of genetic variation ever undertaken supports the theory that the ancestors of modern native peoples throughout the Americas came from a single source in East Asia across a northwest land bridge some 12,000 years ago. One particular discovery is of a 'unique genetic variant widespread in natives across both continents . suggesting that the first humans in the Americas came in a single migration or multiple waves from a single source, not in waves of migrations from different sources. The variant, which is not part of a gene and has no biological function, has not been found in genetic studies of people anywhere else except eastern Siberia. The researchers say the variant likely occurred shortly prior to migration to the Americas, or immediately afterwards.
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-11/uomh-gss112607.php
A few words in one of the planet's most obscure languages support the theory that Native Americans left Asia in several separate migrations, a linguist said in an article to be released Monday.
Merritt Ruhlen of Stanford University has found compelling similarities between Ket, a language spoken by just 500 people in remote Siberia, and Na-Dene, a family of Native American languages.
http://www.lds-mormon.com/science_languages_reut.shtml#3

The divide was more than just distance; it crossed five thousand years as well. No matter the similarities between the two cultures, the possibility of a parallel technology developing by chance would have to be considered. More evidence emerged from an archaeological dig in Cactus Hill, Virginia. A bifaced flint point found there was dated to 16kya, far older than Clovis. Even more startling was its style. To flintknapper Bruce Bradley's eye, the Cactus Hill flint was a technological midpoint between the French Solutrean style and the Clovis points dating five millennia later. It seemed there is no great divide in time. The Solutrean flint methods evolved into Clovis.

Humans wiped out dumber relatives
A study tracing how head lice evolved in tandem with their hominid hosts has shown that Homo erectus died out as recently as 25,000 years ago. This is considerably later than scientists had believed: the species is said to have lived between 1.9 million and 400,000 years ago, though one set of fossils has been dated to 50,000 years ago.
The findings mean that Homo erectus must have coexisted with its taller, bigger-brained descendant Homo sapiens for tens of thousands of years. The two came into close contact suspiciously soon before one went extinct.
Many scientists already think that the demise of the Neanderthals, who are known to have lived alongside Homo sapiens in Europe about 30,000 years ago, was caused by modern humans, whether by deliberate genocide or indirect competition. The new research raises the possibility that we are a race of fratricidal serial killers with a second set of relatives’ blood on our hands.

Genetics and intelligence reconsidered in mainstream
But when you boil down the studies, they suggest three patterns. One, better environments produce better results. Two, moms appear to make a difference, environmentally and biologically. (Their biological influence could be hormonal or nutritional rather than genetic.) Three, underneath those factors, a racial gap persists. One problem with most of the adoption studies is that as a general rule, genetic differences in IQ tend to firm up in adolescence. And in the only study that persisted to that point (the one in Minnesota), kids scored on average according to how many of their biological parents were black.
When I look at all the data, studies, and arguments, I see a prima facie case for partial genetic influence. I don't see conclusive evidence either way in the adoption studies. I don't see closure of the racial IQ gap to single digits. And I see too much data that can't be reconciled with the surge or explained by current environmental theories.
[ Intelligence differences exist within races as well. The question of nationalism is one of whether or not multiculturalism works, and clearly multiculturalism doesn't. Environmental impact of suburbs caused by multiculturalism
Suburbs absorbed a remarkable 84% of the nation's population increase during the 1950s. And the pattern has not much changed. We remain an increasingly suburban nation. Despite a strong uptick in residential growth in some core cities, during the first five years of the new millennium suburbs and exurbs accounted for slightly more than 92% of the total growth in our metropolitan areas.
In 1970, nearly 95% of all suburbanites were white.

Morality is fear
What does, or ought to, separate us then is our highly developed sense of morality, a primal understanding of good and bad, of right and wrong, of what it means to suffer not only our own pain—something anything with a rudimentary nervous system can do—but also the pain of others. That quality is the distilled essence of what it means to be human.

Fascism helps animal species thrive
The reason may be that the ants have had a lot more time to adapt to living in big groups. .We haven.t evolved in the societies we currently live in,. Dr. Couzin said.
By studying army ants -- as well as birds, fish, locusts and other swarming animals -- Dr. Couzin and his colleagues are starting to discover simple rules that allow swarms to work so well. Those rules allow thousands of relatively simple animals to form a collective brain able to make decisions and move like a single organism.
Deciphering those rules is a big challenge, however, because the behavior of swarms emerges unpredictably from the actions of thousands or millions of individuals.

At most campaign events, it is the same. Religious and secular agreement to protect environment
The group reviewed the science, about which there was no disagreement--that the natural world (which everyone agreed to call the Creation) was imperiled by human behavior, especially by our unsustainable burning of fossil fuels and our degradation of living systems, and that human beings were particularly at risk, with the poorest among us, those least able to defend themselves, being the most vulnerable. It became clear to us that there was no such thing as a liberal or conservative environment, or a secular or religious environment. We all breathe the same air, drink the same water, and rely on the same organisms we share this planet with for our health and our lives. Why no apology for Russian Communist crimes?
The greatest crime in modern history, and bloodiest genocide, seems to have almost vanished from our collective memory. Last week marked the 70th anniversary of the Great Terror in the Soviet Union in which tens of millions were murdered or imprisoned.
The Soviet terror began in the 1920s when Lenin ordered the extermination of Cossacks and opponents of the Bolsheviks. Next came Catholics of White Russia, and resisters to communism in the Baltic
states and Moldova. Stalin then ordered liquidation of two million small farmers, known as "Kulaks."
Six to seven million Ukrainians were shot or purposely starved to death. The man who directed this genocide, Lazar Kaganovich was made Hero of the Soviet Union and died in Moscow in 1991.
From 1934-1941 alone, some seven million victims were sent to the system of concentration camps known as the "gulag," including one million Poles, hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians, Latvians and
Estonians, and half the entire Chechen and Ingush people. Volga Germans, Crimean Tatars, Bashkirs, Kalmyks followed. Stalin's gulag did not need gas chambers: Cold, disease and overwork killed 30% of
inmates yearly.
Stalin committed his worst crimes well before Hitler's major atrocities got under way.

White men pay more at bake sale

People are rampantly afraid of discussion; some, like the cultists under Limbaugh's flag, proudly wear their banner of ignorance by calling themselves Dittoheads. But worst of all is the way media,
politicians, and pundits have learned how to pervert our country by herding us into unthinking robots who merely spout the party line without thinking.
[ And the party lines aren't really different, but aren't quite the same, so we have "freedom" we can never use while in the confusion, criminals manipulate us. Good thinking! ]

Digital penetration blamed on geography
In Johannesburg a contestant on the reality-TV show Big Brother Africa was caught on camera digitally penetrating an unconscious female housemate and then, after heeding the pleas of another female
contestant to desist, sitting alone sniffing his fingers. The contestant explained his behavior by telling his fellow housemates, "Well, this is Africa."
[ I'm a Nazi and I can't find anything to celebrate in this. Digital penetration of an unconscious female is rape. ]

Genocide zones afflict oceans, humans useless to help
The Gulf of Mexico has one of the largest hypoxic, or oxygen-depleted, areas in the world. Fish and plants in this 6,000 square mile "Dead Zone" have been devastated, leaving the waters incapable of sustaining many types of aquatic life.
[ We made this mess, we can't clean it up? Who says adults are more mature than toddlers? ]

Nature working overtime to fix overpopulation problem
A total of 46 nations and 2.7 billion people are now at high risk of being overwhelmed by armed conflict and war because of climate change. A further 56 countries face political destabilization, affecting another 1.2 billion individuals. This stark warning will be outlined by the peace group International Alert in a report, A Climate of Conflict, this week. Much of Africa, Asia and South America will suffer outbreaks of war and social disruption as climate change erodes land, raises seas, melts glaciers and increases storms, it concludes. Even Europe is at risk.

New York sued for giving illegals drivers licenses
At least two lawsuits aim to strike down the New York state policy of granting driver's license to illegal aliens.
The governor's office cited numbers from the American Automobile Association that found unlicensed drivers are almost five times as likely to be in a fatal accident as a licensed driver, and that the
state's Department of Insurance estimated a 34 percent reduction in uninsured motorist costs.
Currently, eight other states allow illegal aliens to have driver licenses: Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
[ No sane person facilitates lawbreaking and stupid behavior, but flooding the country with low-cast labor is profitable, so we'll put up with anything. Although, as this suit shows, that's changing. Notice how you heard a lot about Hazelton getting sued for its anti-immigrant law, but a lot less about NYC getting sued for its pro-immigrant laws. ]

USA decides to exterminate Salmon
Salmon advocates filed a lawsuit Monday to force the Bush administration to obey a 5-year-old court order requiring it to make permanent rules to keep agricultural pesticides from killing salmon.
[ What bothers me about this is that we even "need" rules like this in place. No one sane kills off species at random for no particular purpose. Maybe PETA is right in comparin The Holocaust and the way we treat animals, because it's like we don't even see them at all... and if we keep going, we won't BE ABLE to see them at all, because they'll all be DEAD! Good thinking. ]

Motherhood as ideal offends feminists
South Korea's central bank on Monday chose the face of Korean motherhood as the first woman to be featured on its banknotes, but women's rights groups say the selection only reinforces sexist stereotypes.
[ To the single, neurotic, romantically-failed feminist, seeing mothers enjoying family life must really rub in the failure. Feminism, like most negative-minded political cults, is an act of revenge on those who have a chance at a happy life. ]

Exxon will not pay for massive oil spill 18 years ago
The Supreme Court's recent decision to hear ExxonMobil's reasons to void the $2.5 billion punitive award in the Exxon Valdez case hit the town of Cordova, Alaska, hard.
The second painful blow was the high court's decision to not even hear our reasons why the award should be restored to the full $5 billion that a jury of peers decided was necessary to punish the corporate giant back in 1994.
[ You have to be kidding. Record profits allow them to slide out from under an obligation to pay for restoring the miles of wild land they wrecked with reckless, drunken oil transportation? This is a sick joke. ]

US consumer economics will export our economy
The dollar is plunging because America has been living beyond her means, borrowing $2 billion a day from foreign nations to maintain her standard of living and to sustain the American Imperium.
As nations realize that the dollars they are being paid for their products cannot buy in the world markets what they once did, they will demand more dollars for those goods.
The Chinese, whose currency is tied to the dollar, and Japan will continue, as long as they can, to keep their currencies low against the dollar. For the Asians think long term, and their goals are strategic.
The Japanese will take some loss in the value of their dollar hoard to take down Chrysler, Ford and GM, and capture the U.S. auto market as they captured our TV, camera and computer chip markets.
[ Fall of Rome checklist in place: dependent on foreign mercenaries, check; living beyond means and causing deflation of currency, check; waging crazy foreign wars, check; ruled by oligarchs (lobbyists) who manipulate masses with bread and circuses, check. Better put on a raincoat, it's going to get messy soon! ]

Lifting people out of poverty causes pollution and mass death
It takes five to 10 days for the pollution from China's coal-fired plants to make its way to the United States, like a slow-moving storm.
It shows up as mercury in the bass and trout caught in Oregon's Willamette River. It increases cloud cover and raises ozone levels. And along the way, it contributes to acid rain in Japan and South Korea and health problems everywhere from Taiyuan to the United States.
Cheap and abundant, coal has become the fuel of choice in much of the world, powering economic booms in China and India that have lifted millions of people out of poverty.
[ We are subsidizing the rise of people who would not otherwise rise, thanks to our fossil fuels, and as a result, we are poisoning this earth. Not everyone can live the good life. I wanted to be a millionaire who looked like Brad Pitt and could sing like Tony Bennett. You either deal with reality, or you selfishly create a destructive path for yourself and make others and nature miserable (as I would do were I to force you to hear my singing). ]

Poultry industry created immigrant-rights lobby
The plaintiffs in a lawsuit accusing Tyson Foods Inc. of hiring illegal aliens to work at poultry plants are focusing on the meat producer’s relationship with the League of Latin American Citizens.
The class-action suit in U. S. District Court in Eastern Tennessee claims Springdale-based Tyson Foods knowingly hired illegal aliens to work for wages below what American workers would take.
Charles Cervantes, director of the Arkansas chapter of LULAC, said the league’s partnership with Tyson is geared at Hispanic advocacy efforts, such as curbing poverty and improving education.
Tyson is one of many corporations across the country, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., with which LULAC has “corporate sponsorships,” he said.
[ And both sides admit it. How convenient! They're counting on you to forget after another few hours of boring television. ]

Feminism turned sexuality into ownership, screwed it all up
I believe this failure [women and men not finding each other] has much to do with the model of love-seeking most popular in our culture: the idea of romantic pursuit as a type of predation, a hunting expedition the goal of which is capture.
The predator model of love leads to a hunter's way of dating: Seek large gatherings of your prey, dangle a false self as bait, wait for an individual to stray from the herd, then pounce on him with all the wit and wile it takes to bring him down. Internet matchmaking services, singles bars, speed dating, personal ads and even blind dating all borrow from this "statistical mass" logic.
Here's my crazy idea: How about actually having a million things to do? How about actually filling your life with interesting activities? If you want to attract a partner, identify what you love to do, and do it -- a lot. Involved, busy people really are more attractive, so if you want to get engaged to your soul mate, start by being engaged in activities that fascinate you -- especially those that have nothing to do with dating and that make you forget to go love hunting.
[ This is how things used to be done. Is this writer a Nazi, a throwback and a reactionary? Nope, but she's using common sense -- rare! -- and that's how she discovered the eternal truth of dating. Full lives and family-orientation succeed, while spaced-out liberal crusades for justice make everyone miserable so a few uglies can justify failing at life. Here's my crazy idea: apply this same theory to all of life, and you'll get people out of miserable jobs and boring power struggles and back toward a creative struggle for higher existence. ]

Immigration the hidden issue as power struggle goes local
One issue could halt this Democratic tide -- the bitter battle over illegal immigration. Republican candidates in Virginia are promising to take a hard line against illegal immigrants, including blocking them from receiving public services.
It appears the immigration issue is picking up steam across the country, which could help Republicans keep control of the General Assembly in Virginia.
[ Now that people see what multiculturalism is like, they want to go back to their 1950s-1970s style lives. At least, the ones who aren't distracted do, and the others will, in time. So although the press gives it as little coverage as possible, because it's not polite to talk about, it's the biggest issue in American and European elections. ]

Sexual revolution dooms chances of happy family life
Although the divorce rate is the lowest it's been since 1970 (3.6 per 1,000 people), about 40 to 45 percent of all marriages will end in divorce, according to an Associated Press estimate.
A Dutch study this year showed that divorce reduces one's chances of having a new, successful relationship -- slightly more for women than for men. Children reduced the chances further.
[ So now we have the fractured family, because once you get tired of dating you want a family to make some kind of stab at a long-term life, and many divorced people wandering around with truckloads of baggage. What a great way to waste time, screw up the kids, and in the end, make each other deliciously miserable. ]

Race will decide elections in major US city
Atlanta has long been known as “Black Mecca” for national leadership. The home to the modern day civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and, to present day, holds firm to the title. There are more black millionaires and middle income blacks in metro Atlanta than anywhere in world.
Yes, race still matters.
This then sets the stage for the 2009 mayoral election in Atlanta. Over the last decade, the city has witnessed a dwindling black electorate. While voter rosters still show a healthy black majority, it is nowhere near the record levels of the 80s or 90s. Many low-income blacks have been relocated with the demolition of scores of housing projects, thousands outside the city. Younger blacks who may have grown up in middle income southwest Atlanta neighborhoods and still reside here have chosen to move to the affluent southwest DeKalb new subdivisions or to the condo and apartment complexes in Clayton, Cobb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry counties.
[ It's healthy for people to want a leader of their race and ethnicity. ]

Most think life better without TV
CNN.com asked readers to tell us what they would do in a world without television.
The response was overwhelming, with many readers saying they could not only survive without TV, they would actually benefit without it. Many others said they gave up TV years ago and have never looked back.
